When Galia finishes her basic school (6 years) the plan is to make a photo album from (mostly) my photos. Presently I've uploaded them to Picasa (you might remember me asking for a volunteer to look at large volume of photographs). We're hoping to make parents and their kids make their choices that will be then included into the book. Obviously, the final say will be by parent's council or whatever is the name of the select few parents that engage themselves in organizing things for the class. I am looking forward to learning some valuable lessons from the experience. I could do a photo shoot, and afterwards pick my five favorite pictures and give them the prints. In particular, if I were to hire you to shoot my wedding or shoot me and my wife-to-be before the wedding, I'd expect to be handed down the finished album with or without electronic media attached to it. In other words, I agree that customers would like to chose which photo(s) to keep from a portrait session, but they shouldn't have to sort through crap to find the good ones. Or even need to sort through umpteen good shots that are essentially duplicates of one another. I think they expect you to exercise some judgment in pruning down the set by eliminating the obvious bad ones where the lighting or focus are a bit off. Then out of the many good ones you have left, make some quick choices. If you have 17 images 3/4 left front with single light, and you have dozens if not hundreds more with different angles, lighting etc., then make a quick choice of 2-3 from the 17 and move on. stan -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

On Mar 7, 2011, at 5:06 AM, Stan Halpin wrote: Larry, I would suggest a #4 for your list of what the customer expects: The ability to know the difference between best quality and not so best quality photos. Stan, those are all very good points. In the same vein, most people when they go to a service station, would like for someone to come out, pump their gas, check their oil, wash their windshields, check their tires etc. But, given the choice to do that themselves and save a few bucks, or to pay extra for the full service Take a look around and see how many service stations even offer full service at the pumps. As it turns out, in most of my photo shoots the photo selection is done by iterative passes by both my subjects and myself. In the interest of getting a proof disk before they leave that day, most everyone has been happy to sit down and do some rating and selection between photo sessions, while I'm fiddling with gear, or just taking a break. The session that I was initially talking about was the portrait party from last weekend, where I was photographing nearly continuously for about three hours. While one subject was changing clothes after a session, I'd be photographing the next one. The ones that weren't busy, spent some time making a first quick pass on the photos, right there, on my laptop. They narrowed down the 1200 frames to 635. I then spent the next two days going through those frames, weeding out about 3/4 of those: http://www.flickr.com/photos/ellarsee/collections/72157626164718174/ It then took a great deal of effort getting feedback from the women which two photos each one wanted prints of, and when I sent them emails saying these are the photos that I'm making prints of, I only heard back from one of them. So, in short, I spent at least a couple times as long as I did shooting, going through pretty much the process that you described. The point of the portrait parties is to do the portraits more efficiently so that I don't need to charge as much to cover the cost of my time. From a business point of view, I can do the photography efficiently and get good shots of a large number of models in a short period of time. I'm just mired down in the length of time that it takes to convert those photos into a sellable product. I never intended to go professional, for just these reasons, and the more I do it, the more incentive I have to polish up my resume as an engineer. -- Larry Colen l...@red4est.com sent from i4est -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

Re: screwed by filters
If you have a relatively well stocked photo store or department, you should be able to buy (cheaply) a filter wrench. They are made of a flexible plastic and been around as long as have filters. Also, a thin piece of rubber designed to help in opening jars, etc (check in your wife's misc. kitchen drawer) will allow a firm grip on the filter. Re: screwed by filters
There is such a thing as a filter wrench designed for this contingency. An alternative is to buy a large rubber cork whose diameter on the top or bottom flat is the same as the inside clearance on the front of the filter. Buying slightly oversize is an alternative. One approach is to press the flat of the rubber cork against the glass and then turn, a second is to place the larger flat of the rubber cork against the front rim of the filter and turn . . . By coincidence I ordered a few weeks ago a book called Serial Photography, which arrived yesterday. It's by Harald Mante, a photographer whose books I've mentioned before - Photo Design (my particular favourite) and Colour Design. This new book is about displaying similar pictures in multiples - the strapline of the book is 'Using themed images to improve your photographic skills'. It's full of very interesting ideas and well worth looking at if you get the chance, with numerous ideas for photographic practising, like doing your scales on the piano. I like Harald Mante's books. His pictures are very good but not great - they are about form more than they are about subject matter, but they can make you think; they are deceptively simple. But his greatness is as a teacher of photographic composition. The great photographers of subject matter, such as HCB, are masters of form and composition, which they use as tools to show the subject matter in the most effective way possible, so I think it's very important that photographers try to understand master these techniques, even if it's only to reject them, just as painters like Van Gogh and Picasso were trained in the academic method and went on to reject it. Where this book differs from the story essay is that the traditional story essay is narrative, whereas these photographs are not - their effect comes from the juxtaposition of photographs which are similar, but different enough not to be repetitive. It would, of course, be possible to construct a narrative using this technique, for example by some sort of sequence or time lapse. http://www.harald-mante.de/ Bob -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions. Re: IR enablement and a related question
The main thing is removing the IR block from the front of the sensor. Frankly, unless you are using this thing without a camera lens (as in, on a telescope at prime focus) I would not install a filter in the camera, but use one on the lens. This gives you the option of experimenting with different IR filters (with different nm cut-offs). If you are doing it for narrowband astrophotography purposes, then I guess it depends upon what you want to photograph (your target wavelength). If you want to do the above without affecting the focal plane, I believe that you need to replace the IR block filter with a clear glass of the same thickness. 720nm is the usual IR filter if you are doing monochrome daylight IR work. If that is all you plan to do with the camera, it would probably be a lot cheaper to install a small filter at the sensor as opposed to a big one to cover your largest lens. But your camera now has only one purpose. -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

Re: screwed by filters
I don't think the flexible rubber jar opener will work for this job. The polarizer is designed to turn freely. You're really going to have to find a filter wrench. Re: cold shoe question
The shoe mount flashes I have owned all retracted the center pin, (not much of a pin actually, usually a wire contact on these cheap, or should I say inexpensive units), when a PC cable was plugged into them, (a couple of Honneywells two Vivitars and an off brand something I don't remember).. I suppose just breaking contact would have been enough. If the manufacturer keeps the foot hot then you will have trouble. My radio triggers are Blazzeo, so there's a chance their speedlight receivers will work with their studio transmitters. Or there might be an adapter from phono plug to hotshoe. Re: Storm Chasing
Yes, if you just happen to be in the right place at the right time, a tornado might just happen by. If you live on the plains long enough it is bound to happen. But if you want to find picturesque storms in a particular window of time (say a week of vacation?) - that takes some forecasting skill. You need to know when storms will initiate and in what area you are going to get adequate shear to support supercells and low level turning that supports tornadogenesis. I highly recommend booking with a reputable storm chasing tour company. For example, Roger Hill is a storm chasing legend and he runs Silver Lining Tours ( http://www.silverliningtours.com/ ). Tornado season will be starting within the next month for the southern plains, and gradually move north as the season progresses. The month of May is considered Prime Time and you are usually just about guaranteed to find chasable storms if you plan to chase the last couple weeks of May. Nebraska's season is from late May into June, but last year we got passed by as the good stuff went into South Dakota and Minnesota. (Believe it or not Minnesota had more tornadoes than any other state last year. Oklahoma and Texas are really cheesed-off.) Roger Hill story... one day there were no warnings of severe weather from the SPC, but my wife and I noticed big lightning in the west as we came home from some shopping. I checked radar when I got home and was surprised to see a supercell that was CLEARLY producing a tornado about 50 miles west of me. Checking a map, it appeared to be close to Gothenburg, NE. The next day, I found out that Roger and his wife were the only people in the area and were on that storm. The next day, my son-in-law and I passed through that area on a chase and took damage photos just SW of Gothenburg. It amazed me that this guy from Colorado was good enough to be in the right area when this storm popped. By the way, there are different types of supercells and some are more photogenic than others. You want to stay away from HP (High Precipitation) beasts unless you like monster hail and enjoy photographing hurricanes. Roger is based near Denver where they get some amazingly photogenic LP (Low Precipitation) storms and photogenic landspout-type tornadoes. Even if you plan on learning to chase on your own some day, I recommend a good tour service like Roger Hill's for getting an education. I thought I screwed it on at below freezing but it turns out it has screwed me and now refuses to unscrew. I've had luck in removing a stuck filter by putting the lens in the freezer for a few minutes. The temperature change can break the bond of the filter thread to the lens thread. You have to unscrew it quickly before it warms up, though.
