Re: Boris and Galia PESO #12 - Snail trail
Boris, I like the dynamics of Galia's composition. The trail coming in on the corner and progressing across the frame to the snale is very nice. And the sharpness is good as well. Your picture would be better if you were shorter. :-) I think some of Galia's secret is that she is closer to the subject than you. The trail coming in from the distance is a good element, but I want more of the subject snail. Regards, Bob S. On Fri, Apr 22, 2011 at 4:39 AM, Boris Liberman bori...@gmail.com wrote: Hi there. Re: FA35/2 v DA35/2.4
They are indeed the same lens but front element is somewhat hidden by plastic barrel which makes the DA a f/2.4 lens. Though, I read a couple comments (was it here or on PentaxForums?) that in practice, (comparing directly the two lenses and noting the exposure recommended by the camera) the f/2.4 seems to gather more light than its f/2.4 aperture would suggest. Something like f/2.2. They seem to offer really the same performance. FA is better built. Neither have QS focus. DA has built-in lens correction profiles, though (as every DA lenses) and FA comes with hood (adapted for full frame) but DA has no hood AFAIK. I have neither of those lenses so I can't say more. 2011/4/21 Collin Brendemuehl coll...@brendemuehl.net: Has anyone compared the two? If there were a firm date for a Michigan (+ Chicago etc.) gathering, I should be able to work around that. 2nd footnote: my brother is in the Cleveland vicinity. Be brutal and honest. Boris I see things to like and not like so much about both images. Yours, Boris, I like the dynamic sense created by the trail coming out of the depths of the image. I do not like how bright that upper part is - I would rather expect to see this creature emerging from a darker place. It need not be much darker, just enough so that the glare does not draw the eye there first. Or to try to say it another way, I would prefer it if your light would fade somewhat in a manner correlated with the fall off in sharpness as you get further from the snail. But I think yours is a more artful use of the variation in sharpness. I like Galia's geometric composition, but I think it is too static. Or not enough. Maybe it is a geometric tracing, the trail leading to and punctuated by the snail at the end. In which case I would want to see all of the trail and the snail in sharp focus, which would probably require either a tilt lens or taking the shot from directly above the center of the image. Or maybe the intent is, as with yours, to show the dynamic movement of the snail. In which case the snail and nearer parts of the trail would need to be in sharper focus, those further back need to fade out more. Actually, I don't see anything that is macro-lens sharp and wonder if there was camera movement, maybe the mirror-lockup wasn't used, or maybe it is just the problem of a much compressed image. stan -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

Along similar lines --- Took my then brand new Spotmatic with me on our honeymoon to Bermuda. Shot several rolls of slide film. I was using a mail in processing outfit waited anxiously the several days it took for the finished product to arrive. I quickly reviewed the slides on a portable, handheld viewer. One box of slides contained several slides that I didn't shoot - they were artsy/fartsey girlee shots of a good looking babe in various states of undress with the mandatory velvet cloth background. The Big Bang Club I never heard of this movie until receiving Ebert's email this morning. He gives it two stars, but as a photographer, I need to see it. Re: The silliest thing you ever did with your camera
I still wince when I think of what I did. Perched on a rock, about 20 feet above a Scottish burn taking long exposures of the flowing water. LX + FA 24mm f/2.0 on the tripod, F28mm f/2.8 in hand. About to change the lens, nudged the tripod and, in slow motion, all toppled waterwards. In my attempt to rescue the ensemble, I only managed to throw the other lens after it as well. After crying a little, and looking at the semi submerged mess, I waded in the burn and rescued everything. Of course nothing worked. I took it all home and put everything on a radiator for a couple of days in desperation, more than anything else and amazingly after a thorough drying out, complete functionality was restored to every last piece of kit. I know that feeling Stan. Last weekend I was hanging out by a new favorite spot and that is on the Richland Creek Greenway when I spot three ducks on the creek. They were not very close and where they were located was a lot of dark shadows. I only had one capture to turn out half way good but they had their tail feathers turned toward me as they were swimming down the creek. All the other captures I took were blurry. My observations on the 2011 PDML ANnual
Have reviewed the annual several time since I received it, and have come up with several observations * Another great job by Mark - your organizational and stylistic abilities are wonderful - thank you very much for the effort (and the efforts of Doug Brewer, Scott Loveless, Bill Robb Miscrere). As I paged thu the latest edition several things jumped out at me (and my wife - French) Doug Brewer is a very good writer - his foreword is priceless, even for a non photographer - my wife. While all of the images are very well done I'd like to point out my reactions to some that really caught my eye: 'My nephew, Akira' by Christine Aguila - absolutely the best in the book, IMO, the subject and execution are stunning - you should be very proud of it Christine. Notables why I thought so - 'Eighteen Below on the Salmon River by Thomas Cakalic - subject and composition 'Winter's Grace' by Jack Davis - simplicity, subject and execution 'The Red Door' by Ann Sanfedele - symmetry and composition 'From Across +3' by Fernando Terrazzino - subject, composition and lighting 'Looking for Another Wave' by Brian Walters - subject and composition 'Jetty Dreams' by Bruce Walker - composition, subject and light 'Turbofan' by Bong Manayon - subject and composition 'Ruby Red' by Brendan MacRae - subject and composition 'Third Snow this Winter's by Ann Sanfedele - execution, subject and composition 'The Monument' by Buylent Celasun - Subject and execution 'Love' by Tanya Love - subject and execution 'Lead Sled' by Paul Stenquist - what can I say I'm a sucker for a good car image, especially a Ford 'Winter Beach' by Carl Gjersem - composition and lighting I agree with Bill Robb, the quotation list seemed a little forced as if people were purposefully wording things to be included in the annual list. If there was one thing I'd change in the 2011 Annual it would be the size of the font - I find it a little hard to read with my old eyes! Re: My observations on the 2011 PDML ANnual
Ken You've pretty much summed up my reactions as well, and my wife Margaret also commented on the standard of Doug's preface. The layout and format of the book is just about perfect, although I agree a slightly larger font would be appreciated by my aging eyes. There are perhaps half a dozen pages where I think the backgrounds are slightly distracting but in most cases they work extremely well. I dip's me lid to Mark and his co-conspirators and a job superbly done. It's very difficult to select favourites but Christine's 'Akira' is certainly up there. Christine's 'Chicago Fog' was also my favourite in 2008-09, so it's about time she stopped showing us up. :-) I wish I'd taken Jack's 'Winter Grace' - a wonderfully simple but perfect composition. Others that I particularly enjoyed were Toine's 'Bokeh Baby' (another beautiful and simple composition), Ken's 'Ice Flower', Bong's 'Color Pencil Blooms', Ann's 'Red Door', Jaume's 'Monastery Visitors' and, and,and This is a book that I'm going to enjoy immensely over the coming months. Well done all!!
