Hi!

This week we had an international festival of Live Statues in our town.
In fact, it was the second such festival, the first one having taken
place last year.

Galia and I went there also to take some pictures. So here is a little
gallery: (8 pics by Galia and 10 by me)

http://liberman-family.com/boris/pics/Israel/Live%20Statues%202011/index.html

Have your brutal and honest say.

Thanks.

Friday for sale

2011-07-08 Thread Boris Liberman

Hi!

Last week few people contracted me regarding the FA 20/2.8 and asked for
details. It was silly of me not to provide them up front.

So here goes. Asking price is USD 600 all inclusive. I pay the paypal
fees and I pay the EMS shipping with insurance. Given the relatively
high cost of this lens, I wouldn't agree to use any other shipping but
EMS. If you prefer UPS, DHL or any other specific express mail service -
let me know, I will inquire. But EMS seems to be good enough and it is
integrated into local postal service.

The lens is described in some detail here:
http://www.pentaxforums.com/reviews/pentax_fa_20mm_review.php

Please notice that the filter from the pictures of the lens is
unavailable. Tim owns it now.

Also for sale are FAJ 18-35/4-5.6 and ZX-L (MZ-6) film camera with FG
battery grip.

Please contact me off the list if any of the above is of your interest.

Thanks.

G'day all

In a few weeks my wife and I will be heading off to Central Australia.
On the way we plan to take a flight over Lake Eyre* in a light aircraft.

I've never photographed from a plane before so I'm wondering is there
any special gotchas I should be aware of. Lens choices, shutter
speeds, filters, etc

Any advice will be gratefully received.

Reflections from windscreens / windows will be your biggest problem.

Note in some planes the side windows are actually perspex or similar and
not glass at all. These are horrific for shooting through, especially
into the sun - try and sit on the shadow side if possible.

An ideal piece of kit would be some sort of large rubber ring around the
end of the lens to make contact with the glass / perspex so you can get
a steady shot and no reflections.

Not an option in your case i dare say but when we fly professionally,
it's always helicopter and the door is off.

Some aircraft have a small aperture in the side window that can be
opened - if the pilot allows, you might pop your lens through that.

Otherwise, enjoy the flight and don't worry about getting amazing pics.

Thank you Frank - a very nice series. I haven't seen this species in person nor
had I seen the floating nest before. So your pictures sent me off into my
reference books. A couple of interesting factoids: Grebe nests, composed of
decaying vegetation, are usually anchored on aquatic plants, quite unlike those
of most loons, which are built on shorelines or small islands. Chicks are
able to swim and dive from birth. As in loons, adults carry chicks on their
backs to shelter, protect, and brood them. Predators include large fishes -
bass and pike - turtles, herons, gulls, crows, coots, raccoons, minks . . .
[All from The Sibley Guide to Bird Life and Behavior, 2001.]
I also noted that the range maps for the Red-necked Grebe show that it is very
unusual for them to be that far south.

Re: GESO - At Home with the Grebes - update

2011-07-08 Thread Ken Waller
The shots of the Grebe bring to mind an incident several years ago in Grand
Staircase-Escalante National Monumentin southeastern Utah, while on a
weeklong photo shoot.

We were on a two track, early one morning, miles from any paved road, or
body of water, heading across miles of scrub toward a little used horse
corral, when we came across a Western Grebe simply sitting on the ground.

The photo pro I was with is also an avid birder he identified the bird as
a Western Grebe knew that to become airborne the Grebe had to takeoff from
a body of water. The bird seemed ok we assumed it had for some reason
landed in the desert on its own.

We captured the Grebe, put it in a duffel bag with its head sticking out
since we were so far from water, we proceeded to spend the better part of
the day photographing, keeping an eye on the bird offering it water from
time to time. Later that afternoon we got permission from the owners of the
Boulder Mountain Lodge to free the Grebe on their pond. We let the Grebe
free on the pond, apparently no worse for the captivity - it surely would
have died or been killed if it remained in the scrub.

Ricoh camera division exited the USA about 12 years ago. They returned
in small volume distribution just recently, although they've been
successful with their high-end compact niche all along. They've
existed in the USA on private, independent imports through particular
suppliers .. and enough of them that the enthusiast community hasn't
forgotten them. So you wouldn't see many of them in stores just yet.

I'm pretty sure the Pentax acquisition is in good part a USA reentry
strategy. It nets them the Pentax USA distribution network as well as
the brand name and assorted technologies. The Pentax distribution
network, small and potentially weak as it might be, is a heck of a lot
better than no distribution network at all.

Hi guys

Thanks for the suggestions - all duly noted!

I'm not looking for masterpieces out of this trip. As Cotty said, the
main thing is to enjoy the experience, but some reasonably passable
photos would be good too. I'll post some when I get a chance during the
trip.

FS: Supertak 85/1.9, Macrotak 50/4, M42 accessories

2011-07-08 Thread steve harley

Pentax Super Takumar 85mm f/1.9 (M42 mount), $250
s/n 3857105 with original caps hood

lens body in very good cosmetic condition; hood has all its paint but has a few
light scratches; very clean glass, no fungus or scratches; close inspection
reveals very slight mark in the front coating (see pics); small amount of
internal dust; aperture snappy, no oil; focus action smooth throughout and very
nicely damped

Pentax Macro-Takumar 50mm f/4 (M42 mount), $75
s/n 1441060 with original case and front cap, generic rear cap

body appears almost unused; glass is good but on close inspection there are a
lot of scattered markings in the coatings front and back -- not fungus, but
looks like it was brushed (see pictures -- note mark in back element picture is
from my lighting's crude diffuser) -- i did not attempt to clean the glass;
case is in very good condition; this is a preset lens with an outer ring to
quickly slide from the chosen aperture to wide open for focusing

free if you buy both of the above:

Vivitar Automatic Teleconverter 3x-1 (M42), $15
automatic aperture; with original caps and case; some dust and a thin mark
across coating on one side of lens (see pics)

Vivitar AT-1 M42 extension tube set, 12,20,36mm, $10
automatic aperture; excellent, almost unused condition with original case

see photos:
https://www.dropbox.com/gallery/3510446/1/m42%20lenses?h=8457f8

two unadjusted full-size images taken with the Super Takumar 85 are included;
they are close-ups because my adapter does not allow far focus

prices are plus shipping, paypal accepted
