excellent and humble: A 50/1.7, FA 28/2.8 and DA 15/4 (i usually carry only one

Virtually all of the answers so far have focused on exposure only and
not lighting. I found this article to be very informative.
http://www.nyip.edu/photo-articles/archive/photographing-people-of-color
The secret is to create lots and lots of highlights on dark skin.
This can be done with reflectors or side lighting.

From experience, I know that using a strobe from the side would also
be very effective if a wedding dress was in the photo. The side light
shows the dress in relief (which highlights and preserves folds and
details). In fact, a single on-camera strobe is probably the worst way
to show off a white wedding dress.

FS: Low-mileage K-7 body, WR kit zoom, Tamron 24-135 lens

2013-07-12 Thread Joe J. Wilensky
FS: Pentax K-7 body, low shutter count (2,295), EX- condition. Purchased from a
list member (but I don't remember who!). Includes printed manual, original box,
strap, new non-Pentax battery and non-Pentax charger. $225.

Pentax DA 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 AL WR lens, EX+ condition. I had bought this lens
new and sent it back to Pentax before the warranty was up because of sub-par
performance. They calibrated it to factory specs and it now performs very, very
well for this kit lens! A weather resistant lens, it's a great match on the
weather-resistant K-7. $100.

Tamron SP 24-135mm f/3.5-5.6 macro AF aspherical (IF) lens, includes front and
rear caps and Tamron soft zippered case, EX condition. This is a film-era lens
and is therefore technically full frame. Balances well on the K-7 body though
it isn't weatherproof. $125.
It's this lens, for reference:
http://www.pentaxforums.com/userreviews/tamron-sp-af-24-135mm-f-3-5-5-6-ad-aspherical-if.html

Combine the K-7 with one or both lenses for a package deal and price.

Photos available upon request.

FS: Pentax K-7 body, low shutter count (2,295), EX- condition. Purchased from
a list member (but I don't remember who!). Includes printed manual, original
box, strap, new non-Pentax battery and non-Pentax charger. $225.

Pentax DA 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 AL WR lens, EX+ condition. I had bought this lens
new and sent it back to Pentax before the warranty was up because of sub-par
performance. They calibrated it to factory specs and it now performs very,
very well for this kit lens! A weather resistant lens, it's a great match on
 the weather-resistant K-7. $100.

Tamron SP 24-135mm f/3.5-5.6 macro AF aspherical (IF) lens, includes front
and rear caps and Tamron soft zippered case, EX condition. This is a film-era
lens and is therefore technically full frame. Balances well on the K-7 body
 though it isn't weatherproof. $125.
 It's this lens, for reference:

Combine the K-7 with one or both lenses for a package deal and price.

Wonderful. They are beasts, Don. As a child of few years I've been scared and
surprised when a blast of steam enveloped me in the station (NY or Chicago).
I'm old enough to remember the stations being filled with steam, and the wonder
of the new Diesel-Electrics and how quiet they were in comparison.

Now, D-Es are the norm, making us old guys pine for the old days. Except for
dirigibles.

2013-07-12 Thread Ann Sanfedele
(True story - the friend called me just a few minutes ago, giggling and
gleeful... just after the punchline .)

A friend of mine in the Boston area was driving into the city to his
doctor for a checkup/followup appointment. He was going to have an MRI,
for which he was told to drink a large glass of water an hour before the
test.

As he was driving along, he was thinking about it and worried a bit he
might get distracted and forget to do it. The radio was on in the car.

Just at that moment a commercial comes on for a local company that
manufactures plate glass - and the guy on the radio says,

This is Dennis Drinkwater from Giant Glass.

Is a photo taken of the grebe family in the same location as Frank's recent

original image. Someone has tied several nesting floats to the mooring bouys
in the harbour, we could see 1 other nest.

Actually I think I like no birds. Maybe I'll re-do it and post just for the
fun of it.

I saw minimalist when I was taking, and the birds are in he wrong place anyway.

Thanks to all who commented and looked. Much appreciated.

This is lovely. If you click through to the larger image, it is clear
that they are birds. I put my thumb over them to block them out and
thought that the image definitely lost something. The implied movement
and life of the birds injects (for me) some dynamics into what would
have otherwise been simply a sanguine scene.

Well, I do have something very specific in mind. ;-) I'm highly
keyboard-focused, and I have yet to figure out how to easily switch
between multiple terminal windows spread across multiple virtual
desktops. (E.g. five desktops each with three terminal windows.)
Admittedly, I haven't tried 10.7/10.8 to see whether they've fixed my
problems.

okay, so it is much more than just remotely like the linux
feature, but you want some specific behaviors ? i am fairly
keyboard-focused as well, but not a purist; i am also using 10.7, so
i may not know some 10.8 details

command-backtick switches among the various windows open in one app,
and i use it all the time, but it won't switch to a window of the
same app in another space (what Apple calls desktops); i do find
that slightly frustrating, but i just switch spaces (and if the same
app has windows in that space it will remain active); i usually
switch spaces with control [left or right] arrow but control
[number] will take you to that numbered space (you can redefine all
 these shortcuts)

(Now that I'm finally both at my Mac and looking at this list...)

This all functions differently from the way I remember it working in
10.5/10.6 -- Apple made some small but significant changes in the way the
keyboard works. While that alleviates my concerns on one level, it helps
very little on another: Apple is constantly tinkering with their UI and
I think it's reasonable for me to worry that they might break things
next release. But at least this is an option if I can't get the Linux
software working for me, and I can certainly start using this on my Mac.

Note for anyone wanting to try out Spaces (which is now part of Mission
Control), you have to create them by activiating Mission Control and
putting your mouse cursor in the upper right-hand corner.

FS Friday: *ist-D - D-BG1 - FA J 18-35,

2013-07-12 Thread John

Feeling really ambivalent about this, but I have the K10D to back up my
K20D and I don't think I'm ever going to use the *ist-D the way it
should be used.

It's currently relegated to the shelf in the closet only gets used I
can remember to pull it down, put it together run a few frames to make
sure it's still working.

I have all of the original packaging with the inserts; manuals,
literature software.

I replaced the original flimsy translusent plastic push in body cap with
a genuine Pentax body cap K (the kind that fits the bayonet snaps in
like a lens).

The only thing missing is the Hot shoe cover Fk, which I'm still
looking for may yet turn up.

I want $250 USD (+ shipping) for the lot I won't split it up. Whether
it goes to someone on the list, someone on Craigslist (a week from today
if no one here wants it) or goes back into my closet, it's all going
together.

The formalities:

Pentax *ist-D, 6.1MP w/caps, strap, manual, software manual software CD
Pentax Battery Grip D-BG1 w/manual
Pentax FA J 18mmF4 - 35mmF5.6 AL

Cash, Check or Money Order. I'm willing to do PayPal *if* I can figure
out how. Check or Money Order have to clear before shipping. Tell me how
you want it shipped I'll let you know what they're going to charge me.
I apologize in advance for being so anal about that, but I've had
problems before.

Also let me know if you want the shipment insured.

I've had it out this week it *IS* working right now.

I have a set of 4 Energizer Lithium PHOTO CRV3 batteries I'll send
along, along with some (3 I think) 4GB CF cards a 67mm Polarizing
filter I won't be needing.

It is. But it didn't need to be converted. The original was quite monotone.

It just occured to me that I thought this was a BW conversion and it
isnt! ... just a really grey day.

Yeah, lose the birds, they didn't come off when I wiped the monitor

RE: Rolling down the track

2013-07-12 Thread knarftheria...@gmail.com
Haven't looked at your gallery yet. Look forward to that; if this photo is any
indication it will be spectacular!

This has a real vintage feel to it. No visual cues that this is anything other
than a period photo. Even the rendering has an old-time feel to it.

Wonderful!

Recently had an opportunity to photograph a genuine steam engine on the
tracks. I took many pictures and will post some galleries when I get
them up on flicker. Meantime for those who have no moral objections to
Google plus please look at this link and let me know if the experience
works for you. Thanks

Re: GESO Steam tarin people equipment

2013-07-12 Thread Alan C
Fantastic GESO, Don. The loco is a Class QJ 2-10-2 (Santa Fe) so there is an
American connection! I couldn't find a single picture in my collection of
railway books had to resort to the web. Still quite a bit of steam
operating in China but rapidly being replaced.

Here is a full set of steam train photos including passengers and
closeups of the equipment. I treated this as event photography so I
covered the field. I have one or two favs but if you can't find at least
one photo you like your money will be returned.

Taken with K-5 and various lenses. CC welcomed as always.
