custom slr m-plate slim
Yesterday, I ordered the custom slr m-plate slim with the hand strap attachment. The USPS was able to get it the 2.9 miles between their shop and my office overnight. It is a very well made piece of kit. That's the good news. There are two pieces of less than wonderful news. First of all, the hand strap attachment interferes with the battery door on the K-5: http://www.flickr.com/photos/ellarsee/sets/72157634799370466/ The second bit of bad news is that while it works with my old manfrotto ballheads, it doesn't work with with my 804RC2 tilt and pan head. Since I have two ball heads that take arca-swiss plates, being able to use it with the tilt-pan head was a far bigger motivation for getting it than convenience if I need to use someone else's tripod, which could well be an RC2 plate. I've talked to them about doing a swap for their m-plate micro, and don't anticipate any problems. I'm just hoping I can drive over to their shop to do so, rather than dealing with mailing it in. -- Larry Colen l...@red4est.com http://red4est.com/lrc -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

Re: Modern Tin Types
I know you are joking, but the introduction of Jill Enfield's new book (Jill Enfield's Guide to Photographic Alternative Processes: Popular Historical and Contemporary Techniques) makes the point that when photography was introduced and started to become mainstream, painters throught that their craft was dead. It seems silly to us to think of painters getting rid of their painting gear, canvases, and paints just because they now owned a camera (or their neighbor did)... but that's pretty much what has happened when it comes to film, and especially darkroom equipment. One reason that Alternative Processes appeal to me is that regular film work lasting into the future depends upon manufacturers that continue to produce film and photographic papers (something that is going to end at some point and already has for some beloved films and papers). The only alternative (impractical for most of us) is to have a stockpile of film and paper for our lifetimes. Alternative Processes do not rely on such things. You size your own papers with the light-sensitive combination of chemicals and then they develop in other chemicals (or simply react to UV light). Your negatives can be produced on your inkjet printer (from digital images) or produced analog on paper negatives (possibly adding the fun of building your own large format camera). It's a big world with lots of different techniques to explore and hopefully master. Re: 16-45 corner softness...(was re: 16-50 f2.8)
So sorta I fixed my 16-45. I will send my worst copy off to CRIS and have them tighten and align it since I think it has problems beyond just a wobbly barrel and looks sort of decentered. My fix was simple. Realizing that when the barrel was aligned and not drooping I was getting fairly sharp pictures edge to edge a lightbulb went off. I can just simply add more dimension to the barrel of the lens so it is tighter inside the tube. I started off cutting a piece of inkjet film as a shim. It certainly reduced the wobble. I then cut a piece to the dimensions of the barrel. After noticing an improvement in reducing the amount of wobble when slid in between the outer and inner barrels I added a piece of paper to the mix and found it gave just enough tightness. Zooming is slightly stiffer, but it doesn't seem so tight it will wear out the zoom cams. I now went from nearly 1/4 of wobble to maybe 1mm or so. I'm very sharp till the extreme edges of the frame. And that's at f5. This lens really performs when it is aligned correctly. I'm going to keep using it this way until something breaks or it goes bad and will have a decent copy as a backup hopefully. So if anyone has problems with their 16-45 because the barrel gets loose, my advice is to just simply shim it and save yourself the $200 CRIS will ask for. It feels much more robust now. I don't know why pentax just didn't make the tolerances tighter to begin with. Even with tight gears there still is a lot of clearance between the inner and outer barrels and I firmly believe that is what loosens whatever internally is supposed to be holding it tight. I looked at some pictures of a deconstructed 16-45, and couldn't see any way to tighten them internally short of replacing parts where tolerances had become loose. I think its a horrible design if you ask me. I kind of like the reverse zoom and it seems to work well with the optical formula though. It would be really cool for Pentax to update this lens, and since they discontinued it, I'm hoping some sort of mid-grade replacement is coming. Hopefully with WR. RE: Another shot from Italy: Wildflowers
It just seems to be like drinking out of a fire hose when we travel. We get 5-8 hours to 'see' a port or nearby city, usually with minimal ability to plan as guide books do not spend much time on port cities. We now avoid tour buses, taking small private tours, tuktuks, taxis whatever instead which helps a lot. Esp when you can find others who actually want to take photos instead of snaps with photo frames (iPads) through dirty bus windows at 60kmh. I probably do a lot more thinking about my photos as I take them than I realize. Thankfully my wife now has a K100D instead of a PS and she has a great eye for photo ops. I only threw out about 10% of our shots this trip, which still leaves 1 to sort out! gerrit -Original Message- From: PDML [mailto:pdml-boun...@pdml.net] On Behalf Of Mark Roberts Sent: Friday, July 26, 2013 8:04 PM To: Pentax-Discuss Mail List Subject: Re: Another shot from Italy: Wildflowers Gerrit Visser wrote: Very lovely photo. Re: K-5 malfuction... or is it moi? HELP!
If you ask me it sounds like the lens isn't communicating with the body. Did you try cleaning all the contacts? If it has an aperture ring also try rotating off A and back. Since its not reading the lens type and focal length, I'm guessing its just not talking. I don't know if the electronics go bad in them. I've gotten an 18-55 so wet that my camera wouldn't recognize it once and it dried out and was fine eventually. Also try another lens if you haven't already. Re: What if Pentax did a Kickstarter?
I'd bet that the parts for a lens come from many different sources that specialize in the part they are producing for such a lens, or even a camera body. Ricoh - Pentax may design a lens, but with some in-house exceptions, the parts, barrel, motors, circuit boards, flat cables, switches, and parts that require being machined, all are ordered out-sourced. Look at the Boeing 787, Almost all of it is manufactured around the world (at least it was originally, until they found out how shoddy some of the parts were). But everything comes together here in Everett and their back east (N. Carolina??) factory. Same with the automobile manufacturing process. It was big news when Apple announced they would be making the new Mac Pro in the US. Of course, I think they mean assembling a percentage of it. The same with the glasses you are wearing to read this. Think the frame designers have the machines to make the little tiny screws that hold them together? And you know the optics come from elsewhere, ground from blanks that come from somewhere else.
