You can add your banner back in the new customization. The Smugmug design looks like it may be a similar starting point. I haven't found the search by date yet. I used that a lot. On the other hand, changes are so easy to make in the new system, you may not need the custom code. They are saying you can leave your current site up as as long as you want and only change when you are ready, but I don't know about making changes to the old site. They also said this is only the beginning. Now that they have the platform in place (and an ugly lawsuit settled) they will be releasing a more new features. Of course, most software companies say these things. I have a more faith that the Smugmug than most other companies. I watched this hangout last night. Great stuff, Paul. A friend of mine in Rhodesia used to have a Cord (plus a 1928 Fiat roadster). I well remember a couple of short trips in it. He had to pull away in 2nd gear because it shuddered so badly in 1st. He said it was one of only two which were ever imported into Southern Africa. The other was originally in Pretoria but was later bought by a US can museum still bearing it's TP number-plate. OT - converting K5-IIs videos with avidemux
Following the suggestion given in the thread referenced by Darren, I've been trying to find the optimum way of recoding videos from my K5-IIs so that they are suitable for uploading to YouTube (i.e. without clicking). LavAAC Avidemux is a powerful software, but its command-line interface is convoluted and inconsistent. First, there is a big difference in the command line syntax between 2.5.* and 2.6.* versions (and it looks like even within 2.6.* line). Second, the Wiki documentation is messed up, and in order to see it, you have to do it in view source mode (And that seems to last for more than half an year). There is no mentioning which version that documentation is for (2.5 or 2.6). The names of codecs are inconsistent between the documentation, built-in help ( /help), GUI, and reality. Argh! But it looks I am finally getting to a reasonable combination of command line parameters which will allow me to (semi-)automate conversion of videos. And Pentax support is so far stubbornly responded to me in response to the filed problem report that it is caused by AF. (???!!!) So, at least their customer support is in the denial mode. quick review of Direction and Quality of Light
I've been reading Direction and Quality of light by Van Niekirk. If what you're looking for is a fairly easy to read book, where someone talks about specific lighting challenges, and chats about how he solved them, it's pretty good. Like most books on lighting that I've read it falls a lot more into the category of what I consider lighting cookbooks than lighting textbooks. So far, the only book on lighting that I've read that starts out explaining principles, then explains in detail how those principles apply to different lighting situations is Light, Science and Magic. Direction and Quality of light has a little more discussion of principles than many books on lighting, but it is pretty anecdotal. I think that the most important thing that he emphasizes is to pay attention to the light that is already there and what there is available to bounce light off of. Van Niekirk spends so much time referring to his equipment my brand and model, that I am beginning to suspect that he has worked deals with manufacturers, that if they give him gear, he'll mention it in his book. There is definitely valuable material in the book, and I have picked up a few things from reading it. It would be particularly useful to someone who has not read any books on lighting and isn't as interested in the theory behind the lighting setup as much as how to solve particular problems. -- Larry Colen l...@red4est.com http://red4est.com/lrc -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

Re: Smugmuggers I need your help!!!
Ann - I doubt that you need to do anything with CSS or HTML. I've been working with the new site this morning and everything is drag and drop. I've been able to do everything I need to do so far with just the customization settings that exist. My only problem is discovering what can be done. I've been fumbling through things. This afternoon I'm actually going to read through the help files. (Yeah, I should have done that first, but...) It's very similar to the system used by Squarespace where my blog is hosted. Actually, much nicer. Squarespace doesn't have the sandbox feature. I'll probably make the new site available this afternoon, as it is, and make adjustments over the next few days. When SpamCop was black-listing RoadRunner, I switched over to Yahoo. In order be able to receive PDML using Pop3 Thunderbird, I had to sign up for a paid Yahoo account. Outlook does the same, I find it difficult to say it is a bug or a feature though. OTOH in Outlook I can set an option to store the sent email with the replied to one, if it is in a folder other than Inbox. But that doesn't mean of course that the list received it, only that I saved my sent email. I never use the web interfaces for email, only Outlook. That way I get a consistent view and behaviour. New Smugmug site up
I bit the bullet and hit the go button on the new smugmug site. It's nothing earth shattering and there are other designs that are more contemporary, but I'm keeping my family in mind and not changing things too much to fast. For you others using Smugmug, this is based on the Smugmug design. There are a few irregularities so far, All of the featured photos for galleries were retained, but the Featured photos for Categories (now called Folders) were randomly replaced. It took about five minutes to clean that up. I'm not sure if I want to retain the slideshow and the folders on the home page. I might get rid of one or the other. The slideshow is set to automatically resize based on the screen size. It's changed sizes a couple of times so I'm not sure how to predict it. You can set it to a fixed size but I'd rather not. A few of my old videos were replaced by thumbnails or translated very, very small. I'm waiting for an answer on support for this one. I'm going to go through all of the galleries and probably pick different gallery styles. The new styles are much cleaner than some of the old.ones I used in the past. I also need to go to my Squarespace blog and decide how to make a few changes there to make the two look a little more integrated. All in all, with a few minor exceptions, things moved rather easily. The main thing to remember is that you can leave things the way they are until you are ready to switch. And they have made it difficult to switch by accident. You select the unveil button, then you get a standard are you sure? message, then you have to type in a word and click another button to finally make the changes go public. Yes, the other balloon behind his head is a bother to me as well, but with 125 balloons, and 150,000 spectators over the three days of the festival, it is not always possible to get everything lined up. In addition, the balloons rotate once they are airborne, and with a balloon like this one, a shot of the back or side of the balloon just is not as satisfying. I did get one of the fireman alone, but the light and color are not as good, and the badge on his hat, showing the twin towers of the old World Trade Center, is not visible: http://photo.net/photodb/photo?photo_id=17479900 Right after he took off, I grabbed a shot of the Fireman next to the American Flag Balloon, but again the light, the color and the angle are not as pleasing: http://photo.net/photodb/photo?photo_id=17479901 It was a beautiful day, and I had a marvelous time, as you can probably tell. Re: PESO: The Fireman
Thanks for looking and commenting, Don! It is indeed an expensive endeavor. Many of the balloons are owned or sponsored by corporations, and they travel all over the country at various festivals and fairs. When he was still alive, Malcom Forbes had his own balloon, advertising Forbes magazine, in the shape of a French chateau. The Festival employs about 1500 people for the balloon activities, the rock concerts several times each day, and the 150 vendor booths. A local college estimated that the festival brings $42 million into the local economy, ad the fire companies and other civic groups raise money parking cars and doing other things at the festival. It wouldn't be too hard to photoshop out that one balloon right over his head if you wanted to get rid of it. Re: New Smugmug site up
I took a quick look at the Durham Museum gallery (/Trains/Railroad-Days-2007-Durham). I grew up in Durham, NC. Your old station there looks nothing like the old station in my Durham, especially since they demolished ours years ago replaced it with a parking garage (which was in turn demolished to be replaced with a downtown loop bypassing main street). Anyway, I noticed the roundhouse the caption. Southern Railroad's Spencer Shops have been preserved as the North Carolina Transportation Museum including the old roundhouse turntable which looks remarkably like the one in your diorama. If that sort of thing interests you, it might be worth a visit if you're ever get to North Carolina. And if you ever get to downtown Durham, NC there ain't nothing to do and nowhere to go, but there's plenty of space in the parking garages. PESO - End of the Shoot
Raising the periscope again, between my flash trip to London, a family wedding in New Hampshire, and a reunion with college friends in Massachusetts this weekend. Oh, and work--lots of it. Anyway, I caught this as the bride and groom came back to the reception from a sunset shoot: http://photo.net/photodb/photo?photo_id=17482066size=lg Comments appreciated! Re: Quesiton about P-67 to K adapters and P-67 lenses
Full frame lenses on APS-C are a mixed bag. A 16mp sensor is going to outresolve all but the best lenses. On one hand, you are taking from the sweet spot which is where the lens resolves the most detail, but on the other hand you are not utilizing the full image circle of the lens and thus throwing away potential resolution. A MF lens would be even more challenged in terms of resolving power. The K-mount adapter for the Q is a great example of this. A 5x crop factor sounds really cool until your realize that only the best glass works well in terms of IQ. CA is a major problem with that setup too as you are magnifying CA tremendously. Ideally its best to use a lens that has an image circle that is the same as whatever format you are shooting. I hear some 645 lenses do OK on an APS-C sensor. They seem to be mostly ok on full frame, that's for sure, but then your crop factor is much less. 67 lenses were designed to cover an even larger circle, so I wouldn't expect amazing IQ. Some guy was using a 67 400mm lens with a k-5 and was getting decent results. Paul is totally right, MF lenses don't have to maintain the same resolution as 35mm lenses. Just like large format lenses have even worse resolving power over a given area. You can get a FF 135mm-200mm lens for probably cheaper. FWIW I have been told that the 67 lenses were in general better than the 645 lenses from back in the day. I don't know how true that is, but I would trust the source as being accurate and based upon experience. -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.
