Not long after we left, a storm arrived from the south which we were able to observe from a lookout a few miles from the Park. The light on the dunes was stunning as the sun illuminated them below the storm clouds. Between the three of us (my two sons and me) we must have taken well over 100 shots but I don't think any of us captured the scene as we remembered it. Re: 2 PESO - at MOMA
The K-5 (at least the ii version) and maybe earlier bodies have a feature I just discovered during the workshop last week. The instructor was quite adamant about the SR OFF during our shots using tripods, which was most of the time. He reminded everyone to turn SR back on when we were doing our handheld shots on the boat tour of the Pictured Rocks. So early in my set up for the first field trip I dutifully went deep into the menu system to turn off the SR, muttering the whole time about how I missed the SR lever from the back of K-20 and earlier models. But when I went to turn it back on for the boat trip later in the week, the menu selection was grayed out. I couldn't turn SR back on. Eventually I found the problem. The working assumption apparently is that if you have a camera on tripod, you of course will be using a remote to trigger the shutter. As in, why would you mess with a tripod if you are going to jerk the camera around by manually pushing the shutter release? So, if you have the remote firing activated, (and therefore you obviously must be on a tripod), SR is automagically OFF. I didn't need to worry about messing with the menus at all! Just adjust the firing mode with the buttons on the back; Remote Firing ON = SR OFF, Shutter Button ON = SR ON. If you have Shutter Button ON, you can still go into the menus and turn off SR if you want to and then it stays off no matter which firing mode you use. stan On Aug 17, 2013, at 10:54 PM, Ann Sanfedele wrote: On 8/17/2013 22:08, Bruce Walker wrote: Both good, Ann. Re: On the ground
Last week I slipped and fell on a slick muddy trail. Then when I stood up, I bashed the top of my head on an overhanging tree which knocked me back down again. Not my most graceful moment! As I was standing there with blood running down my face and dripping off the end of my nose, (waiting for my companion to dig out something I could use to put some pressure on the wound) all I could think was that I had successfully held the K-5 and attached DA12-24 out of the mud and away from the dripping blood. Blood dries up, wounds heal, but to mess up a camera or good lens would be a real bummer! stan On Aug 18, 2013, at 8:42 AM, Rick Womer wrote: Paul, Three times now I've gone down while walking along, thinking about shooting rather than where I was going. No rabies that I've heard of. The shot was at 6:40 p.m. and I was well away from the critter - using my 60-250 at 250, and then cropping to about 50% to get what you see. Our house is on a river bank, there is a drop of about 8 feet to a 25-30 foot-wide grassy area before you get to the river proper. I was standing above, he was near the edge of the water. Beddlestead Lane
This is a phone snap of Beddlestead Lane: http://www.web-options.com/Beddlestead_Lane.jpg I cycled to Brighton today, and my normal route for getting out of London takes me along Beddlestead Lane. In my mind it is the moment when you truly know you're out of London, and it always makes me catch my breath to see this valley (and I always mean to bring a proper camera and take a proper picture in proper light...). The lane itself is the curving line from right to left through the bottom of the valley. Unfortunately for me, the descent is very twisty, the lane is very narrow, and there is a lot of gravel, so I never have the courage to take it at full pelt. Normally very fit young men overtake at high speed me as I struggle up the other side, but just recently I have been able to pass other wheezing middle-aged men, so things must be getting better! Today I went over Ditchling Beacon for the first time - to my surprise I didn't have to get off and push, even after 60 miles of cycling, and in fact I actually overtook several people! If your talking digital capture images, this metadata is an embedded part of all out-of-camera raw and JPEG images, don't need to do anything for Lightroom to import it. Some of them are really accessible from Grandfather Mountain might be worth checking out as alternative routes when you're headed back home. http://www.ncdot.gov/travel/scenic/ It's both an interactive map a link to an interactive PDF file you can download. The page also has a link to North Carolina's BICYCLE HIGHWAYS if you're in to that kind of thing. -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

Re: PESO: Yellow Swallowtail
Actually, Alan, I believe it is a Papilio glaucus, Eastern Tiger Swallowtail, rather than a Papilio rutulus, the Western Tiger Swallowtail, does not appear east of the Rocky Mountain States. They are quite similar, but the Eastern is a bit larger, and the yellow female has a band of blue spots, rather than the fewer blue and orange spots on both genders of the Western. Of course, they are almost never at rest long enough to get a good look, so it is fortunate in a way that their ranges are distinct. Re: I need a tripod
I've had good experience with Manfrotto/Bogen tripods, but mine are all OLD heavy-weight aluminum tripods. It gets good reviews on BH with an average rating of 4.5 out of 5; 100% would recommend to a friend; PROS of folds away, lightweight, stable, unfolds quickly and no CONS listed. I couldn't get the video to play. It just gave me an orange candy-cane stripe the word loading. I read all the responses on the thread while waiting for it. Not sure I understand the first a question but with the second - you have accidentally set their label colour to red. Do you mean as an overlay in the LR processing environment? If your talking digital capture images, this metadata is an embedded part of all out-of-camera raw and JPEG images, don't need to do anything for Lightroom to import it. You can display it using the Library module's Metadata panel. The popup menu next to the panel title gives you the option to switch between a number of metadata display and editing templates. If you want to see it as an overlay on the image in the main window, look in the View menu, in the section that starts with View Options, to set it up. In the Library module's Grid mode, you can also configure the cells in their largest expansion display form to include metadata in the four corners of the upper info box of the image cells. Just click on those areas and you get a popup menu with the items you can display. [2] Somehow in processing some images earlier today the strip of images/slides displayed at the bottom of the window when in Library got overlaid with a grayish-orangeish color. I don't know how, what it means, or how to get rid of it. No idea about that at the moment. Re: PESO - Storm over the Great Sand Dunes
Thanks to all for the comments - much appreciated. It seems there is no strong preference for either #1 or #2, which pretty much reflects my own view. I'll just have to include both in the photo book I'm putting together of the trip :-) A few specific responses: Quoting Rick Womer rwomer1...@yahoo.com: Both are very nice; the second is the more dramatic image. I have two ideas that might bring them closer to what you remember: First, was it late in the day? nbsp;Warming up the color temp a bit might help. Second, the foreground in the second shot is a silhouette, and bringing it into the visible range would add interest and depth. It was actually late morning. I'll have a look at warming them up slightly. The foreground in No.2 is a problem. I bracketed the exposures but not enough on the + side. I spent a lot of time trying to extract some detail from the foliage but the result was very murky and, to my eye, distracting. This is why I went for the silhouette. Together with the dark clouds above, it forms an irregular frame around the dunes. Quoting Alan C c...@lantic.net: Great shots. The 2nd really shows the power of nature. And I suppose there was lightening thunder too? No - not that I remember. Quite a bit of snow, though. The next day the tops of the dunes were snow-capped. Quoting Bob Sullivan rf.sulli...@gmail.com: Wonderful photos. You put us who live in the USA to shame with such great shots in only a limited visit. I think visitors often see more of a country than those who live there, even if it only involves sampling the country.
