mountains!

Subject: PESO - Storm over the Great Sand Dunes

Back in May we visited the Great Sand Dunes National Park near Alamosa,
Colorado. Not long after we
left, a storm arrived from the south which we were able to observe from a
lookout a few miles from
the Park.

The light on the dunes was stunning as the sun illuminated them below the storm
clouds. Between the
three of us (my two sons and me) we must have taken well over 100 shots but I
don't think any of us
captured the scene as we remembered it.

These are the two best that I came up with:

https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/1370864/PESO/slides/_IGP2410-K5-1-peso.html

https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/1370864/PESO/slides/_IGP2576-K5-1peso.html

Comments appreciated, especially as to which is preferred (if any).

Re: 2 PESO - at MOMA

2013-08-18 Thread Stan Halpin
The K-5 (at least the ii version) and maybe earlier bodies have a feature I
just discovered during the workshop last week. The instructor was quite adamant
about the SR OFF during our shots using tripods, which was most of the time.
He reminded everyone to turn SR back on when we were doing our handheld shots
on the boat tour of the Pictured Rocks. So early in my set up for the first
field trip I dutifully went deep into the menu system to turn off the SR,
muttering the whole time about how I missed the SR lever from the back of K-20
and earlier models. But when I went to turn it back on for the boat trip later
in the week, the menu selection was grayed out. I couldn't turn SR back on.
Eventually I found the problem.

The working assumption apparently is that if you have a camera on tripod, you
of course will be using a remote to trigger the shutter. As in, why would you
mess with a tripod if you are going to jerk the camera around by manually
pushing the shutter release? So, if you have the remote firing activated, (and
therefore you obviously must be on a tripod), SR is automagically OFF. I didn't
need to worry about messing with the menus at all! Just adjust the firing mode
with the buttons on the back; Remote Firing ON = SR OFF, Shutter Button ON = SR
ON.

If you have Shutter Button ON, you can still go into the menus and turn off SR
if you want to and then it stays off no matter which firing mode you use.

Re: On the ground

2013-08-18 Thread Stan Halpin
Last week I slipped and fell on a slick muddy trail. Then when I stood up, I
bashed the top of my head on an overhanging tree which knocked me back down
again. Not my most graceful moment! As I was standing there with blood running
down my face and dripping off the end of my nose, (waiting for my companion to
dig out something I could use to put some pressure on the wound) all I could
think was that I had successfully held the K-5 and attached DA12-24 out of the
mud and away from the dripping blood. Blood dries up, wounds heal, but to mess
up a camera or good lens would be a real bummer!

Re: 2 PESO - at MOMA

2013-08-18 Thread Ann Sanfedele

Well that made me hunt for the shooting mode button :-)
I've been shooting single frame only which I set in the menu... didn't
even know what that button was for in the wheel on the back of the
camera.

The K-5 (at least the ii version) and maybe earlier bodies have a feature I just discovered during
the workshop last week. The instructor was quite adamant about the SR OFF during our
shots using tripods, which was most of the time. He reminded everyone to turn SR back on when we
were doing our handheld shots on the boat tour of the Pictured Rocks. So early in my set up for the
first field trip I dutifully went deep into the menu system to turn off the SR, muttering the
whole time about how I missed the SR lever from the back of K-20 and earlier models. But when I
went to turn it back on for the boat trip later in the week, the menu selection was grayed out. I
couldn't turn SR back on.

No rabies that I've heard of.

The shot was at 6:40 p.m. and I was well away from the critter - using my
60-250 at 250, and then cropping to about 50% to get what you see. Our house is
on a river bank, there is a drop of about 8 feet to a 25-30 foot-wide grassy
area before you get to the river proper. I was standing above, he was near the
edge of the water. I enjoyed seeing him, a beautiful coat and tail! But I felt
no urge to get closer and better acquainted.

Went for a hike with my wife in Ohiopyle State Park yesterday and
photographed this waterfall:

It was a bit tricky to get down to the waterfall from the trail, and
back up, and I'm feeling the effort today.

Looks like a well thought out travel tripod for light duty use.

It seems a little too light duty, tho. 8.5 lbs is pretty modest ... I stick
with tripods that can support 10lbs or higher. And it's not clear that the head
is interchangeable, big negative for me as I use Arca Swiss camera plates and
would prefer to fit a compact RRS head. Manfrotto RC2 plates aren't
particularly wonderful in my experience ... finally got rid of all of them as
they were often frustratingly imprecise.

My travel tripod is a set of Manfrotto 190CXPRO3 3-Section Carbon Fiber Tripod
Legs, which pack down to about 22 inches and weigh about 2.5 lbs, and a
Markins Q3 Emilié head, which I detach and carry separately in my baggage. The
legs just fit diagonally into my rollaway carry on bag ... I pack the rest of
my stuff around them if I'm going to do that, or I just strap them onto the
bottom of my carry-on shoulder bag. They have a column flip on which is very
very handy for low angle shots. The legs are rated for about 11lbs, about three
times the weight of my heaviest camera gear which is what I like to see.

Couple of pictures using them to shoot a photo of my Brompton folded up in the
living room this morning:

  https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/25268645/legs/index.html

enjoy!

The price was right, it has served me well for my purposes. I don't do
much landscape work, so it mostly stays in my studio... Not carbon
fiber, but it supports 11 pounds... weighs 4.5 pounds.

Good luck!

Beddlestead Lane

2013-08-18 Thread Bob W
This is a phone snap of Beddlestead Lane:

http://www.web-options.com/Beddlestead_Lane.jpg

I cycled to Brighton today, and my normal route for getting out of London
takes me along Beddlestead Lane. In my mind it is the moment when you truly
know you're out of London, and it always makes me catch my breath to see
this valley (and I always mean to bring a proper camera and take a proper
picture in proper light...).

The lane itself is the curving line from right to left through the bottom of
the valley. Unfortunately for me, the descent is very twisty, the lane is
very narrow, and there is a lot of gravel, so I never have the courage to
take it at full pelt. Normally very fit young men overtake at high speed me
as I struggle up the other side, but just recently I have been able to pass
other wheezing middle-aged men, so things must be getting better!

Today I went over Ditchling Beacon for the first time - to my surprise I
didn't have to get off and push, even after 60 miles of cycling, and in fact
I actually overtook several people!

Cheers,
Thunder Thighs!

yes it is compact but it seems a little heavy (5.3 lbs) for the price and for
how light-duty it is

Amazon reviews say the head is removable: good

best feature is how compact it is, but that can work against you - low working
height and less stability

as a quick comparison i found the Induro AKB1 which is 3.6 lbs, probably more
stable, plus cheaper, taller and with an Arca-compatible head; biggest drawback
is 26 closed length

http://www.amazon.com/Induro-AKB1-Ballhead-62-Inch-Capacity/dp/B002SXMROY

look around, Induro or another brand probably has a model very comparable to
the Manfrotto at a lower price, or something as compact but better built for
the same price; i have been shopping for a carbon-fiber tripod, slightly
heavier duty, and Induro is a candidate brand; the tripod selection process is
an exercise in multivariate compromise

No direct response, but during the run-up to my Alaska trip, someone sent
this URL:

http://bythom.com/support.htm

which gives a lot of general advice. The critical point is buried near
the end: your tripod weight must be somewhere between one and 1.5x of
your total camera weight (camera plus lens). Otherwise there just isn't
enough stability.

Forgot to include: All up weight of the 190CXPro3 with Markins Q3 head fitted

Price when I bought it was about 2.5x the BeFree setup ... which yet again
reinforces that you only get two out of three: sturdy, light, inexpensive. Pick
any two and you're fine. ;-)

Would be interested in any thoughts.

Looks like a well thought out travel tripod for light duty use.

It seems a little too light duty, tho. 8.5 lbs is pretty modest ... I stick
with tripods that can support 10lbs or higher. And it's not clear that the
head is interchangeable, big negative for me as I use Arca Swiss camera
plates and would prefer to fit a compact RRS head. Manfrotto RC2 plates
aren't particularly wonderful in my experience ... finally got rid of all of
them as they were often frustratingly imprecise.

My travel tripod is a set of Manfrotto 190CXPRO3 3-Section Carbon Fiber
Tripod Legs, which pack down to about 22 inches and weigh about 2.5 lbs, and
a Markins Q3 Emilié head, which I detach and carry separately in my baggage.
The legs just fit diagonally into my rollaway carry on bag ... I pack the
rest of my stuff around them if I'm going to do that, or I just strap them
onto the bottom of my carry-on shoulder bag. They have a column flip on which
is very very handy for low angle shots. The legs are rated for about 11lbs,
about three times the weight of my heaviest camera gear which is what I like
 to see.

Couple of pictures using them to shoot a photo of my Brompton folded up in

I've had good experience with Manfrotto/Bogen tripods, but mine are all
OLD heavy-weight aluminum tripods.

It gets good reviews on BH with an average rating of 4.5 out of 5; 100%
would recommend to a friend; PROS of folds away, lightweight, stable,
unfolds quickly and no CONS listed.

I couldn't get the video to play. It just gave me an orange candy-cane

If I *was* going to buy it, I'd look for it locally, and buy it from BH

I've had a lot harder time playing along with Pete's original

Looks like they're symbols for the 12 signs of the Zodiac.

I'd be willing to bet at some time every day (probably noon GMT) the

that figure 8 thingy in the middle, and where it touches tells the

Re: PESO - Storm over the Great Sand Dunes

2013-08-18 Thread Brian Walters
Thanks to all for the comments - much appreciated. It seems there is
no strong preference for either #1 or #2, which pretty much reflects
my own view. I'll just have to include both in the photo book I'm
putting together of the trip :-)

A few specific responses:

Quoting Rick Womer rwomer1...@yahoo.com:

Both are very nice; the second is the more dramatic image.

I have two ideas that might bring them closer to what you remember:

First, was it late in the day? nbsp;Warming up the color temp a bit
might help.

Second, the foreground in the second shot is a silhouette, and
bringing it into the visible range would add interest and depth.

It was actually late morning. I'll have a look at warming them up slightly.

The foreground in No.2 is a problem. I bracketed the exposures but
not enough on the + side. I spent a lot of time trying to extract
some detail from the foliage but the result was very murky and, to my
eye, distracting. This is why I went for the silhouette. Together
with the dark clouds above, it forms an irregular frame around the
dunes.

Quoting Alan C c...@lantic.net:

Great shots. The 2nd really shows the power of nature. And I suppose
there was lightening thunder too?

No - not that I remember. Quite a bit of snow, though. The next day
the tops of the dunes were snow-capped.

Quoting Bob Sullivan rf.sulli...@gmail.com:

Wonderful photos.
You put us who live in the USA to shame
with such great shots in only a limited visit.

I think visitors often see more of a country than those who live
there, even if it only involves sampling the country. It's only in
the last few years that I've been to Western Australia, north
Queensland, the Centre and Tasmania. A visitor would probably see all
of that in a few short weeks

Cheers

It's better than hand holding for longer exposures, especially if the

It looks very similar to my Velbon 383 (long since discontinued), which weighs
about 2 1/2 lbs (1.2 kg)and is a bit unsteady unless I hang my camera bag from

So, that's what I do.

It is with me A LOT more often than my 6 lb/2.5 kg Slik.

It is with me A LOT LESS since I got the K-5, whose anti-shake is remarkable.
