John very kindly suggested I look on KEH for an idea of pricing. Some of the lenses aren't there for sale so I looked at comparing their sell vs buy price and it looks as though they mark up the buy price by approx 43% to arrive at a sell price. That gives me a price, presumably excluding tax. Any other ideas for getting a target price for these? Anyone interested in making any offers? RE: PAW Stock Yards plus other stuff
I was particularly interested by the bull's head decoration on one of the buildings. I work just by Smithfield Market in London, which has been the main meat market here for hundreds of years. Nowadays it is a conservation area, although the market is still active, and most of the surrounding buildings are no longer involved in the meat trade. But the Rookery, a very lovely boutique hotel next door to my office, and a converted warehouse as far as I can tell, has some very similar cow heads adorning the walls. It is on Cowcross Street, one of the oldest streets in London, where cattle used to cross the Fleet River to get to the market. Re: PAW Stock Yards plus other stuff
Really enjoyed these. Excellent photo essay. I worked near the stockyards as a teenager -- in Speigel's warehouse -- and I can still recall the smell. The Maxwell and Halsted street corner is a hoot. Last time I was there -- about 40 years ago or so -- it was still all ramshackle booths with hucksters pushing their wares. It's a corner stuck in my memory, because I was on that very corner when I heard that JFK had been shot in Dallas. I was 15 years old and had been dismissed from school early because it was a teacher meeting day, so my pals and I took the bus down to Maxwell Street. Radios were broadcasting the news and we heard it as we got off the bus. Re: PAW Stock Yards plus other stuff
Great stuff! The stockyard gate is wonderful. My other fave is the grain elevators. Reminds me of my youth. Montreal had huge ones down at the harbour. Most are gone now, I think one bank is left. The concrete was so thick they couldn't dynamite them! No longer an anachronistic eyesore, they are beautiful industrial design, harking back to a time when the North American bread basket fed the world (or so we were taught, seems that might have been an exaggeration. Re: PESO 2013 - 087 - GDG
I had one like that but it never seemed to work very well and I was concerned that it was possibly made of aluminum so I got rid of it. But a few years ago I got a stainless steel one from Ikea, Googled for instructions and found to my pleasant surprise that it makes some really fine coffee. It's not really espresso since that is made under a great deal of pressure which these stove-top espresso pots cannot achieve. So it's a unique coffee preparation: near espresso. Frank, did you use super finely ground coffee? Did you tamp it down in the filter cup? Did you ensure the gasket was in place when you assembled the pot? Placed it on a high heat? Frank, did you use super finely ground coffee? Did you tamp it down in the filter cup? Did you ensure the gasket was in place when you assembled the pot? Placed it on a high heat? This is the modern version of the original aluminum Bialetti stove top espresso maker. My grandfather made his coffee with one of these for all the years I knew him. I use a medium coarse espresso grind of my favorite beans (currently Yemen Moka standard roast). Fill with water to the line. Fill the basket with coffee and tamp it lightly (you shouldn't go too heavy as there isn't enough pressure to drive the steam through it if it's too fine or tamped too tight). Fit the upper half. Then it goes on the stove top at *low* heat (about 1/3 of the way on my electric stove) and set timer for 20 minutes. At 19:30 minutes, the espresso flows gently into the upper bowl. The flavor is terrific. PESO - Welcome to Berkeley
http://www.alpert.com/marco/photo13/peso16.html Last week, I found myself with an afternoon to kill in Berkeley. Although I'd been back to Berkeley many times since I was a student there in the tumultuous days of the mid-to-late 60s, I don't think I'd ever taken the time to simply wander at leisure around the campus and experience the time warp of memories. The semester hadn't started yet, but students, in some cases accompanied by their families, were were beginning to arrive on campus. I've just begin to go through the photos I took, so the next few PESOs will be from my wanderings. Question for K-5 / K-7 Owners
I am told dust removal on the K-5 is based on ultrasonics. Hence one can't hear any perceptible noise not even a gentle purr like on my K20D. I have put the body to my ears a number of times. I can't even feel a vibration as with my K20D. At first this worried me, as I was not sure if the dust removal menu was working at all. I bought my K-5 with the 18-135 WR Lens in late January 2013 from Henrys of Toronto for CAD 1108. I have checked that it was the Ricoh manufactured model with a shutter count of (1) from the first photo I took. My K-5 is awesome, as the combo takes great photos - almost two times the sharpness, color and contrast of the AL II Kit Lens. Hope we now have some happy K-5 Users out there or do I need to be unhappy? Regards.
