Re: OT - silly question for advanced mac users - update
Well, I've resolved the situation partially. It was time for me to upgrade my MacBook Pro to a newer model anyway (and pass on my 2006 MBP to Alma) so I've managed to get a 2010 MBP 2.53 (8GB RAM) with the hi-res anti-glare screen in mint condition boxed for 785 GBP. I've ordered a 250GB SSD for it also. I wanted a a model that would take 10.6.8 as I have some professionally-used apps that I don't want to meddle with just now. If I get into the realms of a brand new MBP then I'd have to have one that ran alongside for a while to get everything upgraded and working. Looking forward to my new toy er I mean business purchase on Monday! Meanwhile, the venerable PowerBook G4 is still having screen issues but this is interesting: Alma was using it plugged up via DVI to an external monitor and halfway thru a 30 min session, the PB screen springs into life! Unplugs the DVI connection and both screens go through their resolution adjustments 0 eg going dark and then popping back again. The PB screen is now active and useful. It stays on as long as the Mac is used but when put to sleep and later awoken, won't display anything again. I'm leaning to a GPU hardward glitch, maybe? More research needed which I will do this afternoon. -- Cheers, Cotty ___/\__Broadcast, Corporate, || (O) |Web Video Production --www.seeingeye.tv _ -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

PESO: Wine on the Vine
Friend and I did a little photo trip fairly recently. Took him to a tiny local vineyard (one field, one hill) that I've shot before. Mainly when it is filled with mustard. Thanks, Godders and Dan. Hmmm, okay, I'll try it to darken/blur up the left. It was actually pretty hard to get grapes and leaves without much supporting structure also. That looks like something a runners organization put down to mark out a course. I see them on our local greenways. Usually there will be a whole series of them marking start/finish, distances, and turns/turn-around points. Sometimes there will be overlapping courses marked in different color spray paints. Fusion versus SSD?
While I'm looking into my options for hardware upgrades, I've got one question. For photo editing, how does the performance of fusion versus Solid State Drives compare? Caching works, a modern computer has a total of about six levels of caching between the processor, and the data on the spinny metal disk. I could see how a fusion drive could give 90% of the performance of an SSD for a fraction of the cost, or how it might even work better than separate SSD and spinny drives because you don't have to choose what files you put on which drive. I can also see how it might end up having very little performance advantages over spinny drives in some situations. Anybody have any experience, or benchmarks? -- Larry Colen l...@red4est.com http://red4est.com/lrc -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

Re: Fusion versus SSD?
Apple's Fusion drives are a new thing. I haven't used a system so equipped as yet. The idea is that you have both an SSD and a spinning drive which OS X treats as a single file system volume. As you work, the system figures out what sorts of things are opened and closed often, and how they influence overall system performance and app performance, and moves the things that matter to the SSD for you, leaving the rest on the spinning drive. These will be mostly binary executables, OS components, caches, etc ... things that are often created and deleted. The technology was too new for my comfort when I bought my Mac mini, I was not ready to experiment. I haven't heard much in way of serious issues with the Fusion drives, however. What I read mirrors my trepidation with any new technology. That's about as far as I can say. I'm definitely going to end up with an SSD in my main photo processing machine. The question is whether that'll be my current iMac (which is a pain to open up) or some other machine, because with this one, I can't upgrade OSX, and without a newer OSX I can't upgrade Lightroom. your iMac is of a vintage that is not decrepit, but still aging; i would hesitate to invest much in it; several different subsystems are at a disadvantage: slower memory bus, max-RAM limits and the fading fluorescent backlight, to begin with; as for SSDs, its SATA-II bus can be more than saturated by mainstream SSDs; plus newer Macs have both USB 3 and Thunderbolt, which give you options for fast external (and bootable) storage even without cracking the case even a Mini with an SSD might be faster than your iMac with an SSD, but current Minis use integrated graphics, and the last Mini that didn't (the one i have) only has USB 2, so there is a performance plateau with Minis that the iMacs can exceed; personally i find processing images is really bogging me down (MBP, quad i7, 16GB RAM, spinning disk), and i'm about to add a 1TB Crucial M500 or Samsung Evo, but i think i may still be hamstrung by sharing photo processing with other functions (browsers chew up RAM), so dedicating an iMac to photos plus light duty server functions might be a real win (plus i can use its display with my MBP) -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.
