That's pretty hilarious. I can see them wanting to disrupt, like
shaking things up in the market, but that's still an odd choice of
words. As you allude to, it has negative connotations as opposed to
 positive.

Someone has mistranslated something. They probably mean disruptive.

In fact, i just looked and it (now) says disruptive.

Your point is... ? What's the basic difference in meaning between
disrupt, disrupting, and disruptive? They all mean the same thing to
me, except for how they fit into a sentence grammatically.

They may all mean the same thing to you, but they don't to the rest of the

Re: Kodak film?

2013-09-06 Thread Tom C

Your point is... ? What's the basic difference in meaning between
disrupt, disrupting, and disruptive? They all mean the same thing to
me, except for how they fit into a sentence grammatically.

They may all mean the same thing to you, but they don't to the rest of the
 world.

 B

From wikipedia:

A disruptive innovation is an innovation that helps create a new
market and value network, and eventually goes on to disrupt an
existing market and value network (over a few years or decades),
displacing an earlier technology. The term is used in business and
technology literature to describe innovations that improve a product
or service in ways that the market does not expect, typically first by
designing for a different set of consumers in a new market and later
by lowering prices in the existing market.

In contrast to disruptive innovation, a sustaining innovation does not
create new markets or value networks but rather only evolves existing
ones with better value, allowing the firms within to compete against
each other's sustaining improvements. Sustaining innovations may be
either discontinuous[1] (i.e. transformational or revolutionary)
or continuous (i.e. evolutionary).

The term disruptive technology has been widely used as a synonym of
disruptive innovation...

That's basically what I believed they were conveying, but I'd argue
it's not the first thought that comes to mind.

I guess since they had a huge chance of disruptive innovation with the
advent of digital imaging and blew it, they're going to try again.

motivated me to dig into my box of miscellany.
I have a Kirk BL-K10G L-bracket which is designed for the K-10 with battery
grip attached, will work as well on the K-20 with grip attached. This
definitely does NOT work on the K-7/5/5ii bodies or bodies with grips.

If you often shoot from a tripod,
if you do a mix of landscape and portrait orientation,
if you have a K-10/20, and
if your tripod head accommodates Swiss-Acra style plates,
then
you need to buy this bracket from me. $50 plus $TBD shipping expense.

Contact me off list if interested.

I guess since they had a huge chance of disruptive innovation with the

I would argue that they indeed achieved disruptive innovation when they

 them too.

I'd agree with that argument. Nothing like being a victim of one's success.

Don't really WANT to sell the istd body , but since I have the K-5 I'll
entertain offers cause I'm really really broke - two teeth extractions

Pictures provided later if you need - I will tell you I decorated the
camera with green duct tape so I could see it before my cataract
surgery. just on the grip. I had one little hitch with it a while back

that was fixed by removing and reinserting the batteries.

I also have a film KX body - my trusty old beatup one that Eric H
did a CLA on last year and a K-1000 also, but the K-1000 would really
be only $20.00 plush shipping as it isn't made in Japan.

Don't know what to ask for the D - you tell me what you think is fair.

plus priority mail shipping in USA - about $10

Beautiful shot, Brian.
Back in 1997 (I think it was) my wife and I a couple days at the, then,
recently renovated magnificent Crater Lake Lodge.
Due to the fog, we didn't see the lake during the two days. It was our second
visit, so the foggy weather didn't bum us out too much.
The Foggy Pines shot I recently posted was taken during that visit.

Which second party camera system do you like? Mini-survey

2013-09-06 Thread Eactivist
Second party? Third party? Not sure what to call it.

I am just about to sell my Canon camera, and only have one lens left too.
Mainly due to a financial crunch and needing the money. (Boy, it will be
ODD not to have a camera. Had one or two since 2001.)

I expect my financial situation to ease next month. So I thought, okay,
time to switch systems again.

I really liked the Canon lenses I ended up with: good color, sharpness,
and focal lengths. I had one L glass.

BUT.. the Canon system is a wide-mouthed mount, and the lenses tend to be
heavy. Being female, as I get older I am losing upper body strength, and I
just want something lighter.

I COULD switch back to Pentax. But not the K-5, I like spending $400 or so
on a camera, $600 max.

Truthfully the camera body doesn't matter that much to me, they all do
similar things now. Good resolution, ability to shoot video, and some
low-light capability is good enough for me. Once I learn a body, I pretty much
forget about it when I shoot anyway.

I am much more interested in LENSES. Especially zooms, I haven't had any
primes for a long time now. I will probably start with two lenses (what I
usually do), and then work up from there.

I've considered mirror-less, but I really need a viewfinder. I've also
considered micro 3/4. I am OPEN.

A great many of you now have second or third party camera systems now.
Like the Sony NEX.

1. If you have a second (or third party) system what has been your
experience with it? What do you like about it? Dislike about it?

2. What lenses (zooms in particular) do you like/dislike?

3. If you are a die-hard Pentax fan, and feel compelled to recommend
Pentax to me, ;-), which of the smaller bodies would you suggest?
Likes/dislikes?

4. What zooms would you recommend?

I tried to be brief so you won't have too much to read, but it's hard.

Marnie aka Doe :-) I When I thought about making a decision, I though,
heck, ask on PDML and get some experienced input. Then I can find a store, go
in and hold some cameras, and go from there.

FS Friday: Pentax-M 50mm f1.7 with dented MX for a rear cap. :)

2013-09-06 Thread Darren Addy
Selling a VERY nice Pentax-M 50mm f1.7 with a nice working Pentax MX
body as the rear lens cap.
This MX is in really superb condition except for an APPALLING dent on
the top of the prism. Fortunately, the dent doesn't seem to have
affected anything but cosmetics (a real estate agent would call it
distinctive) :)

If you are looking for an effectively FREE MX body, for the
#iShootFilm craze, while picking up a nice M50 f1.7 (PF Rating of
9.33) that can be used on for either film or digital, well here you
go.

Just to clarify condition: Lens = excellent, Body = excellent except
for massive dent on top of prism (in fact, it still has the flash sync
plugs attached)

$49 plus actual shipping to your destination. Will be happy to ship
worldwide (your choice, cheap or fast).

PM for pictures if interested.

GESO: baseball playoff game

2013-09-06 Thread Stan Halpin
The Loons, a local minor-league team, made it into the league playoffs - we
went to their first playoff game Wednesday night. A fairly good game to watch,
both teams had many scoring opportunities but decent pitching and poor clutch
hitting resulted in many missed opportunities. Final score was 3-0 in favor of
the Visitors. A few action shots (home team in red jerseys) and a few crowd
shots are at:

http://photos.stanhalpin.com/p136536907

We had a good seats for viewing, 10 rows up, just left of home plate. But not
so good for photography - the **@%! protective netting was just the wrong
distance away so that I couldn't get any DOF on the players without at least
some of the netting in the view. Oh well - try to look past it and accept it as
part of the real-world context for the shots.

G'day all

Another enjoyable gallery with some outstanding work.

Thrainn's 'Strips of green LEDS' is probably the most visually
stunning and innovative while Rick's 'On Main Street' provides a
different take on the theme.

As usual, you'll find the gallery here:

http://pug.komkon.org/

(you may need to refresh your browser if you see the previous Gallery
there).

Note: The automated submission process usually works well but it's not
infallible. So, if you made a submission and you don't see it in the
gallery, let me know.

Coming up for October is 'Animal Kingdom' - cat and cormorant photos

The mac-mini will show up today with 4G of memory. I want to upgrade it to 16G.

OWC has 16G kits for $170,
Crucial is about $130
Both Frys and Central Computer (locally) have Corsair 16G kits for $120,
tax would be less than 2-day shipping, and I could have it today.

If you're interested in Micro-FourThirds, the upcoming Panasonic GX7 looks to
be a peach of a body but it will sell at $1000. A used G2 or G3 is in your
price range. I had the original G1, and it was already an excellent performer.

There are a number of excellent mFT lenses available, both zoom and prime. From
very compact to fast and pro-quality. I haven't followed the zooms at all but
there are plenty of good reviews.

OWC charges a premium for memory; by sticking to decent brands and carefully
checking reviews, i have been comfortable (and 100% successful) buying RAM
cheaper from various online sources (usually Amazon); Corsair is probably okay,

then it looks like this needs an update:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Thunderbolt_compatible_devices#Monitors

a Thunderbolt port supports Mini DisplayPort, DisplayPort, DVI and HDMI
monitors (all but the first via inexpensive adapters), so your display choices
aren't really limited by Thunderbolt

non-Thunderbolt displays have to be at the end of the chain; Apple says a
non-Thunderbolt display can't be downstream of a Thunderbolt Display, but
reports are it will work if there's an intervening Thunderbolt device

so the only reasons i can think of to seek out a true Thunderbolt display would
be daisy-chaining flexibility (assuming second port) and the ability to include
a hub with other ports

rumor is Apple will introduce a 4K monitor to go with the new Mac Pro (which
will have Thunderbolt 2)

Re: Which second party camera system do you like? Mini-survey

2013-09-06 Thread Steve Cottrell
My only camera is, and has been for about 18 months now, a Fujifilm X10.

In about 18 months I'll be in the market forma X100s (in black if they
ever make the bugger). Have no wish for a system of cameras/lenses again
- my photography needs have changed over the years.

The X10 has a built in zoom with a useful focal range, is easy to
operate but has good manual control (except focus), s suits me for now.

I borrowed my son's 1D and some lenses for an outing recently, and in
fact have a short paid gig on Monday photographing a funfair - will be
using the same kit - and it is big and heavy. But it is bulletproof and
I wouldn't use anything else for that.

If it was just me I'd carry the X10 in the pocket.

Sorry, not much help. There's a reason a few people on here are using
Fuji. Try and get your hands on something like an XM-1 and a zoom.

Cheers

Re: the end of email as we know it

2013-09-06 Thread Bruce Walker
John, he's not referring to simple static text pattern or regex based
rules. He's referring to heuristic textual analysis that ranks and
routes email by content. It can deal with mail from senders you've
never heard from before. It's based on the same technology that they
use to detect spam but repurposed to categorize it (where one of the
sub-categories is spam).

Back when I was building mail routers for a firewall company we were
working on such a system based on Bayesian statistics. It could
reliably detect spam but it could also broadly categorize email,
though much less reliably than spotting spam. Google has the design
chops to get that right and they are rolling that tech out now.
