Focus peaking is just a live view aid, correct? Why does it make focus stacking useful? Re: An hour in the studio with the K3
Beautiful tonality and lighting, Bill! It is indeed a camera that just plain works. Mark On 11/10/2013 5:16 PM, Bill wrote: Right off, I would just like to say that the K3 is the first Pentax SLR camera I have owned, whether digital or film, other than the 6x7, which just works. I like this camera. It's easy to use and very capable. One gripe, and this is pretty minor: When the K7 came out, they had broken the OK button, then they fixed it. They broke it again on the K5, and on the K3, they left it broken, but put on another button to switch from AF point selection to operating controls. I preferred the K7 way after they had fixed it. So it goes, it didn't take much getting used to. I shot everything off a tripod with wired remote today, so I can't attest to the camera's handling. The tripod didn't tip over once. I shot with the 77 Ltd, the 70Ltd, the DA*55/1.4 and the A*85/1.4. I was stopped down to the f/5.6 to f/8 range (small shooting space these days, my lights are overpowered for it). The auto focus works under studio lights. This is a first for me with Pentax. Every Pentax AF SLR camera I've had prior to this one has had flakey AF in the studio. I'm very happy with the auto focus. They seem to have done some improvement to the focusing screen as well. I found focusing with the 85 to be very easy as well. I suspect I will be leaving the screen alone and not install a Katz-Eye in this camera. I hate to say it, but there are still not enough AF points.. Because they are almost all packed into the central rectangle on the screen, there are still a lot of times I am not placing the focus point on an eye unless I want to compromise the composition or recompose (possibly knocking the eye out of focus anyway). However, the AF is better in every respect than previous Pentax SLRs. I didn't try LiveView AF today. Perhaps next time. Anyway, this could have been done by any camera, but it was done with the K3 at ISO 100, with the 70mm Ltd at f/4.5. http://users.accesscomm.ca/wrphoto/pictures/elle1.html bill -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.
Re: K-3 functions - tidbits from the manual
I can't speak directly about the K-3, but this particular type of focusing option is is on several cameras. Where AF-S locks focus and stays locked, AF-C never locks; the intention for AF-A is to initially lock on to a somewhat stationary subject, then if the subject moves, shift the focus with the subject. It sounds like a good idea, and perhaps the Ricoh/Pentax engineers may have figured out how to make this option work better than others. I don't know. But, I can say that I've never seen it work very well anywhere else. My theory has always been that most cameras don't have enough focusing sensors to track the subject, or the sensors can't really figure out what really is the subject, or a combination of those. Until I can see the feature work reliably, I've always named the three functions Single, Continuous, and The One that Doesn't Work. gs George Sinos www.GeorgesPhotos.net www.GeorgeSinos.com On Mon, Nov 11, 2013 at 4:28 AM, Eric Featherstone eric.featherst...@gmail.com wrote: I'm also not sure how AF-A automatically decides between AF-S AF-C but I'd guess it uses information other than from the AF system. PESO - Sidetracked - a macro with the phone
I saw these little coal hopper cars in the hobby shop and had to buy a couple. They are painted and lettered for the local power company where I worked for so many years. It grabbed a couple of sections of track from a storage box in the basement and set this up on my kitchen table. The macro shot was taken with iPhone from about 4 away. I was surprised that it actually worked. The lettering on those cars is incredibly small. The cars are only about an inch tall. Looks like a setup with potential. Look forward to see your project developents! Jostein -Opprinnelig melding- Fra: George Sinos Dato: 11. november 2013 17:09 Til: Pentax-Discuss Mail List Emne: PESO - Sidetracked - a macro with the phone I saw these little coal hopper cars in the hobby shop and had to buy a couple. I often use the phone to take a sketch shot before setting up the tripod and lights. More often I use the phone to take a shot of a location or subject I don't want to forget so I can return later with more appropriate equipment. http://georgesinos.com/blog/2013/11/11/sidetracked gs George Sinos www.GeorgesPhotos.net www.GeorgeSinos.com -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions. -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

Re: Question about finding Missing folder in LR
Godfrey, Thank you for trying to help. However, it looks like LR on Windows does not use the volume label. Rather, it relies on the drive letter. See e.g. this thread: http://www.lightroomforums.net/archive/index.php/t-20196.html Igor Fri Nov 8 15:17:33 EST 2013 Godfrey DiGiorgi I don't know what the issue with your system is, and I'm not a Windows user so I have no way to find out. But LR has been using volume labels in preference to drive letters since v2 at least. So something is screwed up in how your system is configured, or was configured. A volume label is a higher level file system construct than a drive letter and persists even if the drive letter changes. Once you set volume labels for your system, start LR. It will pick them up and display them in the Folders panel. Once a volume label is in use, LR uses that instead of a drive letter because file system calls to a volume label are translated by the OS to the underlying current hardware letter identifier. Tony Ray-Jones audio slideshow
I've mentioned before about the great exhibition that's on at the moment at the Science Museum in London of photos by Tony Ray-Jones. Chris M and I went to see it a couple of weeks ago - my second time - I love TR-J's work. Anyway, there's an audio slideshow of some of the work on the BBC News site here, if you're lucky enough to be able to run it in your jurisdiction: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/in-pictures-24826739 The exhibition details are here: http://www.sciencemuseum.org.uk/visitmuseum/Plan_your_visit/exhibitions/onl y_in_england.aspx If you can't see the slideshow you might enjoy looking at some of his better-known photos at the Science and Society photo library: http://www.scienceandsociety.co.uk/results.asp?searchtxtkeys=Tony%20Ray-Jon es A new book of his photos is also recently published, and I received my copy last week. It is called American Colour, and shows pictures he took in America before he returned to the UK to start the work for which he became well-known. The book is superb - you can see all his influences coming into play, and his gradual development. There's a review here: http://www.theguardian.com/books/2013/oct/05/american-colour-tony-ray-jones -review I think I own a copy of all the books by or about him, but they have all now become very valuable. A Day Off for example will set you back the best part of 900 quid on Amazon.co.uk. So if you like to collect photo books as a little potential investment, this would be a good one. When they did that, they made some other changes, which don't allow for cutting across the dirt inside the apex with your right wheels. But, the character of that turn hasn't really changed much. Turn seven is nowhere near as fun now that it has been opened up with the added pavement from the handicapped ramp. The last two sessions yesterday (one of which I ran until my car started spewing steam) used the handicapped ramp. Gonna do it again? Of course. If racing left marks, both of my arms would be covered with needle tracks. I first ran Sears Point at Bondurant, almost exactly 27 years ago. I did SCCA drivers school there. It has always been my favorite track (though Thunderhill is the more common track for schools these days). I didn't expect to be back on the track until I got my MG running again. The only problem is that if I'm teaching, and don't have to pay the $300 for the weekend, then the other costs, if I'm honest with myself, start at about $300 for the weekend. Going as a participant, rather than an instructor is a much easier weekend, so that brings the cost up to about $600, or more. So, I need to be a lot more judicious about my track time than I have been in the past. On my second session, just barely out of the pits, I was accelerating coming out of turn 2, not even up to speed, and the car came around on me. The group leader suggested I lower tire pressures, and that seemed to help it feel a lot more stable. Sunday morning, on my first session, I took the first couple of laps very slowly, on my third lap I was starting to pick up speed, apexed early in four (my race speed turn in point was too early for the speed I was carrying), spun in four, and the car behind me tapped me in the right front fender. I managed to get the car together for most of the second session, and did OK. In the third session, I got a few laps in and the car overheated, it was leaking from (I believe) the heater hose. It was quite an emotional rollercoaster of a weekend. Driving to the track felt like I was going home after a long absence, but every session had humbling challenges. Something I learned this weekend
I went to the Society for Photographic Education northeast region conference this weekend I'll describe it in more detail later in the week. Presentations alternated between talks on theory (of both photography and education) and artists showing and discussing their own work. I took notes during the whole weekend and here's one entry from my notepad: The world does not need any more large-format photographs of ferns. Thanks Don. I get your meaning, but I think that doing just a few high-key shots within a larger set of boring dull pics won't improve the whole. Balog's Ice
i saw James Balog's exhibit, ICE: Portraits of Vanishing Glaciers, at a small non-profit gallery in Denver Friday night; i had previously mentioned his documentary, Chasing Ice, as a photography adventure story (among other things); the Ice show consists of largish prints from Balog's book of the same name, very beautiful pictures of ice and its loss from many locations - more locations than those in the movie, and some shots are more recent than the movie's many of the photos are very abstract; some are interesting for the unusual locations that few of us will ever visit; others are loaded with meaning, such as a shot of a tiny glacier remnant in Glacier National Park, a park which will need a new name Balog calls himself an environmental photographer, but prior to this show i had come to think of Balog in comparison to Galen Rowell, telling adventure stories through photography; as we were browsing through the book, which is very well-printed, someone asked if he'd used lights for a shot … he hadn't, he described how there were skylights in a crumbling ice wall that produced the backlight in the photo, and how he had moved in for a few seconds to get a shot then retreated to recompose and repeat, so as to avoid the falling chunks well worth seeing if you are in Denver; i did not get the impression this exhibition will travel; the book is good too http://www.cpacphoto.org/2013/10/james-balog/ -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.
