Re: For street shooters - 90 degree mirror add-on lens

2013-12-25 Thread Joseph McAllister
Takes a lot of time to develop the skills to place an image you want to
capture. Moving the lens to settle on something has you fighting with having
the lens's mirror at a pretty precise 90 degrees from the horizon. If you tip
the lens down a fraction, it goes astray.

But it's inexpensive, a frustration to use, fools few when they notice your
antics trying to seem to be pointing the lens at something in front of you
while rocking the camera body left and right to find your true subject.

OK, sorry, When I think optics I think lenses.
The mirror in the 90° add-on I had was not very good. IIRC. You would not be
likely to get a sharp image.
I think 135mm was about the shortest lens you could use without heavy
 vignetting.

How can you load a particular profile? Is it is possible at all?
I could not find that possibility.

Re: Waiting to Mush

2013-12-25 Thread Daniel J. Matyola
I actually am thinking of attaching a GoPro camera to the sled, when
he and I get a bet more skilled at mushing.

There is a large tract of woods, owned by the municipality and
restricted as open space, to the west of our property. A major
underground sewer trunk line goes through the property, and there is a
sewer easement that is kept clear of trees and rocks, so that vehicles
an access the sewer line if necessary. It is not unpaved, and
grassy, so it would be ideal for a trail through the woods for the
dogsled.

Yes, I used it twice this December with Bandit, and in previous years
I have used it with two Malamutes, when I had two, with as many as 6
dogs, using some from two Malamute friends in the area, and with
single dogs or pairs for weight pulling contests. Our champion M,
after he retired from the show ring, loved the weight pulling
contests. More recently, Lee and I have not had the time to train our
dogs for more that just fun runs around the yard, down the quiet
street we live on (when we have someone to stop cars coming in) and
along the sewer easement through the woods when the snow is deep some
 pundits

 enough to make that passable.

Missing from the image, of course, is a harness. As anyone who has
been around sled dogs knows, when the dogs see the harness, they get
very impatient and a bit rowdy, so I took his portrait before bringing
out the harness. The line hanging down from the front part of the
sled has a metal hook with clasp that is used to connect the sled to
 the tow line.

 Thanks for looking and commenting.

FWIW Dan,
my suggestion is to use the head strap mount as it lest you see more than
the ass end of the dog. I used the head mount during my sled dog race, and
enjoyed the added perspective it gave at simply the turn of my head..

Re: GESO - Ice Storm Gallery

2013-12-25 Thread knarf
Thanks, Dan, and thanks to everyone else who commented.

We were very lucky in New Toronto (older suburb just west of the city). No one
out here was affected that I heard of. Just east (Mimico) and west (Long Branch
and Mississauga) of us lost power; some for only a few hours, some longer.

At one point I think up to several hundred thousand were without electricity.
As of yesterday there were 120,000, today down to 70,000. The storm hit on
Saturday night and Sunday so this is a long time in freezing temps to be
without power.

It's all downed wires, all very local so it's a time-consuming procedure to get
things repaired on a block by block basis.

Luckily no deaths reported.

There certainly is a beauty to it though. Glad a few of you enjoyed what I was
able to capture.

Thanks again.

Cheers,
frank

Current K-3 deal at BH

2013-12-25 Thread Marco Alpert
I don’t know if this has been on for a while, but I’m finally planning to move
up from my nearly prehistoric *ist Ds to a K-3 and see that BH is now offering
the K-3 with the battery grip, the DA 50mm f/1.8, a 32GB card and a 4% “reward”
for $1296.95. If I wanted the grip (which I don’t) and needed a 50mm lens (I
already have the FA 50 f/1.4), it would be the best deal I’ve seen yet.

Now if they’d only lower the price instead of bundling it with stuff I don’t
want…

Thanks for the feedback. Even at 500mm there was a lot of extra

easily recompose with the bird further to the right in the frame.

I guess, what Ken is talking about is not the framing but rather how
the head is turned. I agree with that.

I can't go back and change the head, but here is a reframing of it:

 I like LRC10100 the most.
I think that one is what Ken referred to as the second image.
The sixth (10107) is just a bit too much straight, it needs
just a bit more turn of the head.

I'm afraid that that isn't something I can do anything about.

Today, I was prepared to go back out with bigma and monopod. Before
lunch, on my way to the lab, the birds were out in force.
In the afternoon, when I had time to shoot, waiting for the
installation
program to finish, they were gone, nary a sparrow to be seen.

 Best,

 Igor

 PS. Regarding the model:
In some countries, sparrows are a nuisance, pretty much like pigeons
at a city square. I know, I also like taking photos of something
that
normal people consider as nuisance at best, or ugly and gross
 otherwise.
