Re: Birds at Feeder (Wrap up)
Alan, We've also had success with different types of seed for different birds. Here some of the bigger beaked birds, cardinals or grossbeaks, prefer sunflower seeds. Meanwhile the wrens and goldfinches prefer little black thistle (nigger) seeds. And the doves like the cheap mixed seeds on a platform or ground feeding. Regards, Bob S. The more timid species (like Blue Waxbills, Firefinches, Grey Headed Sparrows Yellow Eye Canaries) wait for lulls in the feeding frenzy. If I move slowly, I can easily get quite close. The birds are used to me now. What spooks them is shadows or a larger bird flying nearby. Also noisy cars or motorbikes! Entertaining new toy arrived...
I saw a Sigma 600mm f6 mirror lens on eBay for $90 that looked to be in great shape so I clicked the BIN button. It arrived yesterday—immaculate condition, in the case with the four accessory filters. It's Nikon mount and I have the adapters to fit it to both A7 and E-M1. So I stuck it on the E-M1 for a few hand held test shots last evening. It's amazing how efficient that camera's IBIS is... A couple of nice, shake free test shots with an effective 1200mm FoV at 1/300-1/400 second. Of course it will work best on a tripod. The lens is light, focuses smoothly, and handles easily. It's a little lacking in contrast like most Mirror lenses, but that's easily accommodated in Lightroom. Seems reasonably sharp too, but I'll leave judgement on that to when I use a proper tripod. Should be fun! PESO -- Joseph Conrad
The Charles W. Morgan was out of town on business, so I had to content myself with a shot of the Joseph Conrad. This is pretty sharp for a third party mirror telephoto lens and what the Kalamar is capable of when the planets align the moon is full. On a side note, the K-5II really spoils one. Re: Birds at Feeder (Wrap up)
I've given up my bird feeders. The last few years, the local deer were really making a mess of them. Even when I hung them so high I had to use a ladder, they would gather underneath to vacuum up what fell to the ground, They were driving my dog crazy, and tempting him to run into the woods after them. That of course raises the specter of deer ticks and Lyme disease. To make matters much worse, we had two feeders torn apart by brown bear over the last three years. Interestingly, the lack of bird feeders has substantially increased the number of birds using the bird houses. They are all full this season, and I have two nests in trees and one on top of my outdoor floodlight. I think they feel more secure without all the Jays, Cardinals, Grackles and Crows that the feeder used to attract. I do miss the Goldfinches, however. Re: OT: Journey to the centre of the universe
Hi Rick, Thanks! My goal was to cycle the Diagonale from Dunkerque to Perpignan (http://fr.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diagonales_de_France). While planning the route I discovered La Meridienne (http://urp.ffct.org/NV-meridienne.html), which runs from Dunkerque to Barcelona, crossing the border at Prats-de-Mollo, so I contacted the URP and got their route cards, which I put into my GPS, with variations to suit me. I then decided that if I had time I would either go to Prats-de-Mollo and roll over the border into Spain, then Perpignan, or vice versa, but I didn't expect to have time. In the event I got within half a day of Perpignan with a few days to spare, but I decided not go to the frontier for several reasons: 1. I was knackered 2. I'd been looking at the Pyrenees since leaving Carcassonne and there was snow on the tops, as well as forecasts of storms. The border at Col d'Ares is at 1513m altitude, and I was not equipped for those conditions - it would have been foolhardy 3. I'd been cycling for 2 days into headwinds blowing up the valleys, and needed a rest, which wouldn't have left enough time to go there and back and visit Collioure, which I was keen to do. The French food was great, but it is decidedly not gout-friendly. About 15 months ago I gave up meat and most fish, as well as yeast and a few other things to stop the gout attacks, but it was impossible to stick to this, eating in hotels and restaurants every day, and from the middle of the trip I was getting mild gouty episodes. Shame really. Here's a picture from Bruere-Allichamps, which is of one of several places claiming to be the geographical centre of metropolitan France. The column is a Roman milestone. http://www.web-options.com/Centre.jpg B On 8 Jul 2014, at 21:42, Richard Womer rickpic...@gmail.com wrote: Welcome back, Bob! July PUG - Now Up!
G'day all Well this one didn't disappoint - a wide range of genres and styles. The interesting thing is that there are no images created with recent camera models - no K-3s, no K-5s, no K-7s. Not even a K20D. The most recent model is a lone K200D. Does this mean that our best work is behind us? How depressing... Or maybe it just takes time for recent images to become memorable. Anyway, the most images were taken with the venerable *ist D (5), just ahead of the K10D. Eight were taken with film cameras, the oldest being the SV. As usual, you'll find the gallery here: http://pug.komkon.org/ (you may need to refresh your browser if you see the previous gallery there). Re: OT: Journey to the centre of the universe
The 2007 tour actually started with a time trial in central London, from Whitehall to Westminster, past Buckingham Palace, and on to a finish along The Mall. The stage that went through Greenwich (and Woolwich Dartford) and on to Canterbury via Maidstone, Tonbridge Ashford was run on the following day. I grew up in that area, so I went back to the UK to see this. I got some shots from along the Mall on the first day, and basically one decent shot from a vantage point along the A21 near Ashford on the second day. That's because the auto-focus on my FA* 80-200 apparently packed up after the first shot I took, so that's the only one that's in focus. Hello Godfrey, congratulations for the 600mm Sigma Mirror Lens. I too have one but in f 8. I can use it on my K-5 in bright sunlight. Do use it with the clear glass filter at the rear as it tends to make the image a bit sharper. Mine came for CAD 75 from a Toronto Star Gazer Professor in M42 Mount with an Original Pentax Japan K Converter- in Mint condition with the Hood. Light and easy to hand hold but as you said a Tripod would be better. I jack up the Saturation, Contrast and Sharpness in Bright mode on my K-5 when using this lens. But I did not know there was a fast f 6 variant of this lens like yours?? Have fun with your toy. Regards. I'm afraid I'm guilty of not giving sufficient consideration and advance notice to this theme. No excuses, I'm a dolt... The first Synchronicity theme was in October 1998 and the idea then was for PDMLers to all take a picture at more or less the same time. The equinox was adopted as the reference date for taking the pictures. Given that the June equinox has passed, it would be too restrictive to adopt that for our August PUG. So there are two options: * Defer this theme until October or November, using the September equinox as the reference. * Adopt a specific time and date this month. Your thoughts?? -- Cheers Brian ++ Brian Walters Western Sydney Australia http://lyons-ryan.org/southernlight/ -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

Mike seems to know what he's doing. Saw him go inverted once last year, but didn't have my camera ready. He doesn't seem to do it often - which is probably a good thing: shows he's somewhat careful.
