Thanks, Ann. There is no road, just a narrow mountain path, which ends

THe waterfall needed you to be in a place to shoot where the
ledge at the roadside wasn't in it. I'm guessing roadside and
the ledge is necessary to keep the falls from eroding the road -
lots of places in the USA have similar.

Wow, Chris. Kids there must be much different than kids here. Even
when he was very young, my son was fascinated by the balloons, and
wanted to get as close as possible. Kids in this neighborhood love
the balloons, and the whole neighborhood turned out to gather around
the landing balloon and to help pull it down after they lowered
several rope. Even the children of our new neighbors, whom I am sure
never saw a balloon up close before, were excited and anxious to get
as close as possible.

We don't have cricket here, but I can't imagine a local soccer or
baseball coach being irate if a balloon landed in the field. It would
be a grand event, welcomed by all. In no way would I consider
balloons scary or dangerous. They come down quite slowly, and usually
are pulled down the final 20 feet or so by ropes dropped down to
people below. What scared my dog was the noise of the propane burner
as the balloon passed low over our roof, just like the noise of a
vacuum cleaner scares some dogs. When outside, he has watched
balloons and blimps pass overhead numerous times, and he
always watches with interest, especially if he can see people in the gondola.

inside. The negatives are mostly 2-1/4x3-1/4 and there is old film
pack box (Premo Film Pack) with approximately 25 negatives in it. The
developer's label is partially missing so I can't see the town in
Nebraska where they were developed, but the customer name on it is
Mrs. Robb. There is a little Housh Film Index which has negative
numbers and some information written about the subject in the negative
handwritten along side. They appear to be of local locations (Like
Shelton, Nebraska) and international sites (suggesting the
 photographer was an international traveler).

There is a rather modern paper sack for negatives (as in Kodak
Colorwatch System days but inside are some decidely old exposures...
cars with wooden spoked wheels and steamer trunks strapped to the
running board... as just one random example. Other photographs appear
to have been taken from THE AIR, which is pretty wild if they are from
the early 1900s. I'm guessing there are close to a hundred negatives
in this box, but I have yet to count.

So, I need to figure out how to scan these things and see which ones
might be neat to print. At work I have a nice scanner and it has a
negative holder that will work for 6x7 film, I think. I've never tried
 scanning negatives before.

There is also a little yellowed envelope of MM Photo Matts (2-1/4x4-1/4)
Artistic negatives of frames and borders designed with oval,
circular, and rectangular openings. By using these Matts and improved
appearance can be given to any picture. These were made by Millard
Manning, 3351 Sheffield Ave. Chicago, ILL.

Anyway, this seemed like a lot of fun for $25, and quite out of the
ordinary... so they followed me home. I will keep you posted, if
 anyone is interested.

When I said earlier I could understand why it scared your dog it was

Went to the balloon festival in Albuquerque in October,1982 - now -that-
was really something. (there is one shot I took on my pentax users
page) THe sound of the propane tanks was a nice whoosh sound to

me - and the sky that day was an intense blue - we got to the field

Yes and no. The balloon launched knowing it would be setting down in

roof on the house next to us, then crossing that back yard before
landing in the front yard of the house behind us. I'm sure they
hadn't planned on setting down that close to a house, however.

Wow, Chris. Kids there must be much different than kids here.

No different Dan, but this wasn't a gentle planned landing. The first
that was seen of the Balloon was when it appeared over the trees at
the edge of the ground. There was a stiff breeze and it clipped a
sight screen (a large wooden structure that would kill you if it
toppled over on you). There was no ground crew and all of the adults
on the ground were concerned with making sure that 22 10-11 year olds
who were scattered over the acre or two of a cricket ground weren't in
the way of the dragging basket. To add insult to injury, the basket
ploughed a groove across the square ( the bit of the pitch that is
kept flat so that the ball bounces in a true manner). Luckily nobody
was hurt.

Re: PESO - Bored

2014-07-27 Thread Richard Womer
Yup. Nice pic--I have several similar ones, and certainly recognize
the feeling!

Somehow, train stations work much better than airports for this kind
of pic; I think it has to do with the repetitive pattern of the
platforms.

Cheers,

Nothing special, maybe - just a kind of picture one might take when being
slightly bored and tired of waiting for a train that was supposed to have
left some 40 minutes earlier. Featuring a couple of others that were quite
possibly in a similar state of mind...

Re: PESO: Yesterday's Fawns

2014-07-27 Thread John

Habituation.

They've learned that cars driving past aren't a threat; probably they've
even grown used to the cars slowing down or stopping as they go past.
They're still likely to take off running if you stopped and got out of
the car.

The A* 200s are hard to find, though one went on ebay for a fairly
reasonable price not too long ago. I wish Ricoh would produce a longer
macro or that Sigma would deem the KAF mount worthy to receive some of
their offerings!

Thanks for looking -

The only problem with these is that they made me start searching eBay
for an A* 200 macro. As if I'd take equally nice insect photos if I
only got the same lens. I most likely wouldn't, but how can I be sure
if I don't give it a try? ;-)

Anyway, I think you do this rather well.
