Re: PESO: Balloon Landing on Neighbor's Lawn

2014-07-28 Thread Ken Waller

Scary things balloons. Hard to steer.

You steer by knowing the wind directions at various altitudes and using that
info to 'steer'.

Did a little hot air ballooning many years ago - quite an eerie experience.
The commercial operation I used couldn't tell me where we were going until
the morning of the flight, cause they are at the mercy of the winds.

Once aloft, the experience is unlike anything I had experienced. Absolutely
no noise except for the occasional lighting of the burner. We never got very
high so we could hear all sort of noises from the ground - doors slamming,
people talking, dogs barking. Our pilot added a little more excitement to
the flight by doing a dash and go in the Merrimac river - he touched the
river with the bottom of the basket and quickly took off.

try it if you get the chance.

Re: PESO: Balloon Landing on Neighbor's Lawn

2014-07-28 Thread Daniel J. Matyola
I did try it several years back, Ken, and it was very enjoyable. It
was indeed eerily when the burner was off, but I was surprised at how
noisy the burner was when you are that close to it.

On my trip, we suddenly lost all the wind, and were becalmed above a
forested area. We couldn't land until the ground crew reached us. We
threw down ropes, and they pulled us along until we were over a small
clearing, but it was tricky, as the ropes kept getting tangled in the
trees, and we had to pull them up and then toss them out again.

I highly recommend the experience.

OT: another stupid Thunderbird question

2014-07-28 Thread John

I only accept email as plain text. Thunderbird converts HTML emails into
plain text. Some emails end up as nothing as links that are impossible
to follow, but that's Ok, because they're mostly throw away junk.

Mostly everything works like I want it to except that occasionally there
is an email I want, but the plain text doesn't wrap to the window.
Thunderbird help the info I was able to find on-line both address how
to use flowed format to make the the emails I'm SENDING wrap to the
window width.

But I haven't been able to winkle out what I have to do to make RECEIVED
HTML messages that Thunderbird converted to plain text wrap to the
window. I get these one line per paragraph messages that have to be
scrolled horizontally to read.

I hate that.

Anybody have an idea what I have to tweak to make the line wrap to
window width?

PESO strawberry

2014-07-28 Thread Larry Colen
A friend of mine does face painting and wanted to do a photo shoot with me to
show off her work. She got a mutual friend to be a model (you may recognize
the the model from previous photos of mine). The whole evening was very
experimental and educational. I felt like I was spending more effort fighting
the lights and our limited time to shoot than I was just getting photos.

Here’s a photo that despite it’s problems, is still kind of nice. The fill
flash and the hair light didn’t trigger, but the resulting effect seems to have
worked.

Re: OT: another stupid Thunderbird question

2014-07-28 Thread steve harley

on 2014-07-28 13:43 John wrote

I only accept email as plain text. Thunderbird converts HTML emails into plain
text. Some emails end up as nothing as links that are impossible to follow, but
that's Ok, because they're mostly throw away junk.

from your mention of converting it sounds like you have the following
settings:

View Message Body As Original HTML

plus the following in the config editor:

  mailnews.display.html_as = 1 (convert to text)

this does indeed convert HTML to text, but i greatly prefer:

View Message Body As Plain Text

which shows the actual plain-text version; this will still have tons of coded
tracking links on most commercial email, but is a bit cleaner on these and is
much better on emails that have a well-formed plain-text version; i also
recommend the following extension to make it easier to occasionally view HTML
versions without changing the default view for other messages:

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-us/thunderbird/addon/allow-html-temp/

But I haven't been able to winkle out what I have to do to make RECEIVED HTML
messages that Thunderbird converted to plain text wrap to the window. I get
these one line per paragraph messages that have to be scrolled horizontally to
read.

i can't reproduce this specific behavior; either i'm not understanding your
description or you have set things up differently from me (i tried several
config settings)

for me, all messages wrap correctly for reading, but when i compose replies to
messages that don't use format=flowed, and that have unwrapped paragraphs, i do
see the quoted part running off the right side of the compose window; perhaps
this is the problem you're seeing? if so, i use the Rewrap command (command-r
on Mac) when i see that problem, and it rewraps cleanly; there's an extension
that will do this automatically on all replies, but i haven't tried it; you
could also try the following setting:

  mail.compose.wrap_to_window_width = true

but i don't personally like the result — quoted text displays better while
composing replies, but messages are sent out with wrapped lines not properly quoted
