Camera for a 13-year old?
Looking to tap the collective wisdom of the list, as I'm a bit out of touch with the equipment area. One of my granddaughters is showing an increasing interest in photography, and is outgrowing the compact digital and the iPad gear she has been using, and will probably be given a new camera for her birthday next month: my question is what would the list recommend in these circumstances? I don't believe an SLR is the right configuration, but perhaps a mirrorless or 4/3 which could also use some of my Pentax lenses would be the go? Cost is also a consideration, as her twin sister will be one of the contributors to buying it for her! The Olympus Pen Lite (E-PL5) might be a good choice if $600 or thereabouts is not too much. There is a cheaper Pen but it's mainly menu driven and probably a bit limiting. Pentax lenses can be used with a Pentax K - Micro 4/3 adapter (only in manual focus mode), which can be had on Ebay for about 20 bucks. None of the Pens have an eye-level viewfinder although there is a clip-on electronic viewfinder available (adds about $200). Another option could be the Lumix G5 - a bit more expensive than the E-PL5 but it has a built-in electronic viewfinder. I'd suggest taking a look at Digital Camera Warehouse's web site - it has pretty much all the current mirrorless options listed so you can compare prices and features. http://www.digitalcamerawarehouse.com.au/ -- Cheers Brian ++ Brian Walters Western Sydney Australia http://lyons-ryan.org/southernlight/ -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

Re: Flash for K-5IIs
I dunno about Larry but in my case I use my two $400+ AF540's as dumb slaves because back when I was flush with disposable income I thought that wireless P-TTL was the awesomest concept ever and I bought two of them. Now I'm older and much wiser and realize that I should have bought cheap stupid flashes and used radio triggers, and invested the extra money in Apple stock. But at least I can get good use out of them as powerful light sources. I do like having one P-TTL flash for on-camera inside event work. Re: OT: Sort of fascinated by what Sony has done with the a7s
The A7s sensitivity is amazing. The EFCS (same as on the A7) works very well; first full-frame sensor to have a fully electronic shutter mode is big, even if it isn't capable of doing everything. I've found the A7 to work very well with all of my SLR lenses, which are Leica R and Nikon manual focus lenses. From what I have heard, most SLR lenses adapted to it similarly provide excellent performance, modulo particular lenses. I've found it to be an excellent FF digital SLR surrogate for lenses that there is otherwise no replacement digital SLR body that I'm willing to spend money on (or none at all like for the Leica R lenses). Where the A7 and A7r have issues with adapted lenses is when you fit Leica M-mount lenses, which have a shorter mount register. Only some wide (less than 35mm focal length) M-mount lenses work to best advantage, typically the ones with retrofocus designs like the Leica Tri-Elmar lenses. The A7s seems to have less of these issues … the lower resolution sensor has less of the corner/edge/color shifting stuff. They also seem to delight in ignoring standards to try to lock users into buying *everything* from them. admit that I love that, thanks to the mirrorless design you can use about any legacy lens on them (with the proper adapter). But after reading a petapixel article on the a7s and its potentially being the best astrophotography (low light) camera on the planet, I had to read up on it. There are various technical advantages of mirrorless: 1) shorter registration distance means no retrofocus, which means better image quality at wider angle of view. 2) shorter registration distance means that you can use just about any lens made. 3) No mirror bouncing around means no mirror bouncing around. 4) Live view works much better for low light manual focus etc. What you see is what you get. With a mirrorless you don't get the huge shutter lag while everything bounces around between live view and actually taking the photo. There are certain ergonomic advantages to the pure optical path when looking through the viewfinder. - - - Can you imagine what the Pentax hoards would say if Pentax came out with a full frame camera with fewer megapixels than the flagship? This Sony camera is fewer megapixels than the PREVIOUS Pentax flagships: the K-5, K-5ii/iis I would love it if I could buy a K-3 in both 24 and 12 MP versions, with the associated advantages to both resolutions. Thanks Bob. The perspective is a bit deceptive. The wind was quite gentle and steady, so. they are moving away from my POV, but slowly. Because the wind was light, they stayed in view for much longer than in previous years, and because it was steady, rather than variable, they were more or less aligned with each other as they drifted away. They all landed closer to the airport than usual as well. All in all, the wind conditions made watching them and photographic them a bit easier than usual. Were it not for the A7/r/s, I wouldn't be either. Not because of any 'soulless accountants' or other mumbo jumbo like that, but because there's little else in their product line that I find appealing. There are various technical advantages of mirrorless: 1) shorter registration distance means no retrofocus, which means better image quality at wider angle of view. That does not play out in reality, or is at least inaccurately stated. Wides are a challenge on digital sensors, non-retrofocus wides in particular. The best performing wides on any digital sensor are retrofocus or at least semi-telecentric designs, to date. It's a matter of getting an orthogonal light path to the sensor all the way to the edges rather than retrofocus design really. A short mount registration means you have more room to add corrective optics behind the primary element groups and less worries about mechanical interference. 2) shorter registration distance means that you can use just about any lens made. ... But results will depend upon the optical match between lens and sensor stack. See above. 3) No mirror bouncing around means no mirror bouncing around. Shutter vibration is still an issue, note all the hysteria about shutter shock lately. A fully electronic shutter will conquer that issues, but non work 100% to date. 4) Live view works much better for low light manual focus etc. What you see is what you get. With a mirrorless you don't get the huge shutter lag while everything bounces around between live view and actually taking the photo. There is certainly less mechanical banging about going on. But it's amusing to hear you talk about 'much better for low light manual focus' when so many of the SLR diehards claim exactly the opposite. :-) There are certain ergonomic advantages to the pure optical path when looking through the viewfinder. Ergonomic advantages? Can't imagine what you mean by that. And what is a pure optical path? The main advantage to the Sony A7 for me is the excellent sensor, excellent viewfinder, and a modest size (about the same as a Nikon FM2) with great compatibility for all my SLR lenses, in several mounts, and a few of my RF lenses. Mirrorless or not makes little difference to me, I rate it highly based on its functional performance. The *OLD* Vivitar 285HV flashes are getting kind of hard to find. There are a lot of NEW Chinese made Vivitar flashes, but they are very poor quality nowhere near as reliable. There are a number of inexpensive good quality Chinese strobes on the market, but the Vivitar ones are not amongst them. I've had trouble mixing the P-TTL flashes with older flashes using optical slaves because of the preflash. George Sinos mentioned the Cactus V6. Here's a review from the Strobist Group on Flickr: https://www.flickr.com/groups/strobist/discuss/72157644142606469/ I haven't had time to read all of it myself. I just ran across it while looking for something else, but it may be germane to the discussion here. For radio slaves, I've been very happy with my experience using Paul C. Buff's CyberSync. I previously had the no name Chinese 4-channel radio triggers. On 8/1/2014 12:15 AM, Darren Addy wrote: Crikey, Larry. Why use a $400 flash as a dumb optically triggered slave? The other problem with the Metz is that I cannot figure out how to use it as a dumb optically triggered strobe. It’ll work with the fancy ttl controls, at least in theory, I haven’t had much luck, but when I want it on a stand, triggered off my studio lights, I seem to be SOL and just need to get an external optical trigger. IMHO, it works much better (but not universally perfectly, - so you have to use it smartly). I've been using it in two modes: either in A, where the flash decides when to cut itself off, or in PTTL. In most cases, I find that A mode works better, especially when I turn the main flash up, and have the front fill-in sub-flash enabled. I use PTTL often for forward-facing (typically longer-distance) shots. Also, PTTL seems to work somewhat better at the very close range (1-3 feet), maybe because camera's CPU is faster to cut off this powerhouse. I agree, however, that the buttons of Pentax AF540 are more convenient than the menues of Metz 58. Those menues are frustrating. But I choose a better functionality. Also, there were some problems (and I don't remember all the details), that Pentax AF540 didn't not keep its settings upon power-cycling, and it might not allow a manual mode. (Larry might still remember this part, - he complained about that more recently.) It looks like Metz 58-2 might have a better hotshoe mount, which is welcome, as the one in Metz 58 is becoming a bit loose after a lot of use, and may require occasional adjustment after insertion. Hmm. - My Sony Walkman AM/FM Pocket Radio, purchased in 1985, is still working perfectly. As is my Sony Walkman CD Player, purchased in 1991. - My Sony Trinitron 19 television set, purchased in 1989, had the power supply fail in 2003. It was easily repairable, but not economical to do so. I held off buying a replacement until 2005, which was a Sony Bravia flat panel television set. It's still working perfectly … - My Sony DSC-F707, purchased new in 2002, I gave to a friend in New York in 2004. He's still using it. - My Sony ruggedized digital camera (2Mpixel thing, can't remember the model) is still being used by my partner. In 2009, Sony replaced its sensor and completely overhauled it for free. I have nothing against Sony products. They've generally worked very well for me. When they have something that suits my need or fancy, I have no problem buying what they offer. I cannot see the point of all the brand bashing. Godfrey On Aug 1, 2014, at 3:04 PM, P.J. Camera for a 13-year old?
It would be fun for your 13 year old to use some of your lenses as he moves up and learns, so the K-500 with the 50mm f1.8 Lens would be the best buy. You could borrow his camera in emergencies. I have seen great deals on the K-500. As an 8-year old my Father gave me a British made Ensign Ful Vue Flex TLR camera - cast magnesium - built in yellow filter + 3-Apertures and 2-speeds with B T. At 13 he gave me a Yashica TLR, a full fledged camera with a Kako Japanese Flash Gun. In college he gave me a Pentax Spotmatic and allowed me to use his Leica gear. We had a full Leica Lab with an Enlarger at home and enjoyed developing + printing our own photos. Trust a 13 year old as a big boy - what joy for a teen. He will love it and love you for this great gift as I did my Father. Regards. Re: Geso Mackinac Island Trip
Don - Really enjoyed these... Mackinac Island is a special place to me , mainly from my childhood, but I did get back there when we were driving back from Alaska in OCtober, 1989. We took the ferry and only stayed on the island two hours... Richard wasnt up to much of a hike. I only got a very few shots on slide film then... and not sure now which trip it was :-( - but before digital days. Don't have any that I know were taken there in the 40's by my mother or father. Loved the Ester Williams movie with Van Johnson and Laurence Melchior (sp?) that was made on the island. That wooded path is particularly appealing, several of the bridge shots are very strong. The bridge wasn't there in the 40's. And in '89 I'm sure I lobbied for the ferry.. but we may not have been able to drive there anyway unless we had reservations to stay on the island. All this is a long way of saying I'm grateful for your photos of the place. ann On 8/1/2014 14:23, Don Guthrie wrote: Been reading the group regularly and loving the bird, balloons, sailboats,Philadelphia etc etc. Just haven't had time to comment as I have been traveling. RE: Camera for a 13-year old?
Thanks Brian, Darren, and John for thoughts. Larry, I just think that an SLR might be daunting for a youngster, although I am sometimes inclined to give an older SLR (like an SV with the accessory meter) so that the basics can be learnt while still having quality results. There is little more disappointing for someone starting out than getting crap results, IMO. Still debating! Re: Trouble with uploading books from LR 5.6. to Blurb
Boris, It's nice to hear from you. While I don't have an answer, I thought, this thread might be useful to you: https://support.blurb.com/entries/24620879-Problems-with-book-upload-from-Lightroom-5-3 (you may have seen it already...) It looks like it is a common problem, and most likely for large(r) books. Moreover, some people (see the comments here: https://forums.adobe.com/message/5551459 ) seem to have problems uploading the book they had uploaded previously. The only consistent solution is after trying several possibilities recommended by the Blurb support which did not work I was advised to create a pdf and to upload it to the Blurb dropbox. Somebody else reported that keeping the computer active helps... (so that it doesn't go in any type of power-saving mode). That sounds like some voodoo, but I can see it being responsible in some cases. E.g. when the power-saving mode includes stopping the HDD or something, possibly creating some pause in the upload stream, if the software on Blurb website is sensitive to that, it can consider the the connection broken. Re: Camera for a 13-year old?
It depends on the child. When I was 12, my mom gave me her Argus C3 (my father bought her a new Kodak Retina IIIc). When I was 13, my grandfather loaned me his Rolleiflex Automat. That was at the start of High School. The following Summer, I took all the money I'd saved over the course of the year and my uncle supplemented it to help me buy a Nikon F. Later that same Summer, I'd saved up another $100 and bought a pair of decrepit Leica II cameras at one of the big camera shops in Manhattan. If you're going to learn to shoot with film, you're going to make some mistakes and get some crap results along the way. It's part of the process of learning. To protect a child from that is a waste of time, and doesn't help them learn. I made many mistakes in those first couple of years and created a bunch of really bad junk. But I learned a whole lot, and by the third year I was shooting semi-professionally on the weekends as a second for a wedding photog.
