Re: Count number of lens surfaces from a photo

2014-09-15 Thread Mark C
Interesting experiment... Intuitively, it would seem that reflections
off the lens surfaces would align with the angle at which the light was
entering the lens. You can see that in the alignment of the two bright
flare spots in the lower left corner with the sun (light source,
obviously.) So - I wonder if the halo of small light spots circling the
sun are the result of lens flare or, as Bill Robb suggested, water
droplets or even dust specs on the front element. If they were
reflections off the different lens element then wouldn't they be in a
line, diagonal up towards the light source?

Like in this photo:

Personally, I'm too lazy to look up that right now, but I'm thinking

one

with

that number (told you I was lazy.) But I'm also wondering if one could
make that 6x instead, and also reorganise the sensor (see above.)

Nyquist rate times the bayer pattern.

Double should be good enough to get unaliased luminance data, but you
need to look at the sample rate for each color. What you are really
asking for is that each color be sampled at over the nyquist rate.

I wonder if there are pathological cases where the repeating pattern
is at 45 degrees and you need another 1.4 times the resolution to
avoid aliasing.

What if it is a curvy (meandering) line?

Re: OT: stacking, again more help please

Hi Christine -

I am way behind on reading the list

I have used CombineZP and it works well. It offers multiple ways of
aligning and stacking images. I did not do in depth tests but did see
different results from the different processes. The interface is very
dated and it only supports 8 bit TIFF (I had some problems getting it to
work consistently with TIFF's but it did fine with JPG's). At the price
it is worth a try

Hi Ann -

For what you are doing, I think that the ideal would be to put the camera on a
set of focus rails, focus in on the front edge and then just move the rails a
little closer, shoot again, repeat till you get to the end. If you don't have
the focus rails just turn the focus ring. Given that everything is stationary
you can just turn the ring, shoot, repeat...

For stacking software Photoshop can do it - not sure which version it first
showed up in (maybe CS4?) It is done by using bridge to load the separate images into
layers then just running the edit-align layers command followed by the
edit-blend layers command.

CombineZP is a stacking program that is freeware. Here is a video about it:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2B36OStuHjs

As you can see - the interface is somewhat dated but the software works well.

I have tried both turning the foucs ring while firing away and also pushing the
camera in on the subject. For me turning the focus ring has worked best - BUT I
am shooting live subjects in the fiel with the camera on a a monopod. The
faster I can capture a bunch of shots the less likely the subject is to move.
By nature, pushing in the camera on a monopod basically means moving it in an
arc, which complicates the aligning of the images. So for me, in the field, it
is K-3 on the fastest shooting mode (whcih is very fast) and a quick turn of
the focus ring.

Good luck!

and turn the focusing ring of my 50 macro very slowly (with camera on tripod

run them through the stacking software?

Is there stacking software that is free or inexpensive and work

The Equinox approaches...

2014-09-15 Thread Brian Walters

Hi all

Just a reminder that the theme for the October PUG is Synchronicity',
which requires taking a photo on the date of the September Equinox -
now only a week away.

The actual time of the equinox will be on 22 or 23 September,
depending on your locality. You can find the actual time for your
locality here:

http://www.timeanddate.com/worldclock/fixedtime.html?continent=namericaiso=20140923T0229msg=September%20Equinox%202014

http://tinyurl.com/pmmh9qp

The photo should be taken during a 24 hour period - 12 hours either
side of the actual time of the equinox.

The subject of the submitted images can be whatever you like but
images taken around the areas where you all live might make the
gallery a bit more interesting - but that's only a suggestion.

The surgery took five hours, longer than expected. The doc found a number of
affected lymph nodes, including one close to the aorta, so a lot of precise
work was required. He also found a second tumor in the small intestine. The
primary tumor in the colon was very large. When I spoke to hem after the
surgery he wasn’t optimistic but didn’t say it was hopeless. I asked if there
was a chance for full recovery and he said there’s always a chance. Not
exactly encouraging but enough to give me hope. Worse than I expected but not
as bad as it might have been if there was liver involvement.

I will remain optimistic, although I’m not as hopeful as I was yesterday
morning. Will get more information and a more clear prognosis as the medics
complete the pathology of the tissue that was removed. In any case, chemo
will start as soon as Marlene has her strength back. The doc said radiation
therapy is a possibility as well.
