Re: Testing - using Thunderbiird software and plain text
Thank you Bruce. I didn't have this book, but I just ordered it :-) I have been shoting strobes since 1992 - attempting to learn by doing - a very time consuming process - full of dissapointments - and joy :-) I am using a PhotoCubic FlashBox A21 (good for allmost anything but jewelry) and a Kaiser Toptable set-up for macro photography. And I found the Alex Koloskov Youtube videos very useful. Also I found the Elincrome Skyport trigger (hot shoe accessory) - that allows me too adjust flashes from the camera, very usefull. Re: New Pentax DSLR Lenses
I'll bet it is a 20mp K-50 replacement. The only question of real interest is will it have an improved auto focus system, inherited from the K-3 or get the K-5II AF system. Ricoh could do either. While a tilt screen will be welcome to some, it introduces another mechanical system that can fail, and makes the camera a bit bulkier. I do hope that Ricoh also introduces a K-500 replacement in the same vein, the K-S1 isn't really entry level, and it's just not been all that well received to become that even with a substantial price drop. Now let the gnashing of teeth begin as it's not the long anticipated Full Frame DSLR that everyone says they want but no one will buy if it's more than $1200.00. While a tilt screen will be welcome to some, it introduces another mechanical system that can fail, and makes the camera a bit bulkier. I've got a tilt screen back on my Nikon Coolpix 7100 and at most it adds a quarter to a half inch to the depth of the body. While it has its usages I haven't got into those situations where it is necessary. Kenneth Waller http://www.pentaxphotogallery.com/kennethwaller - Original Message - From: P.J. Re: OT: Go Pro
Dan I think you'll be out of range with the Go Pro if unless your going to be up close and personal with the whales and surfers. Kenneth Waller http://www.pentaxphotogallery.com/kennethwaller - Original Message - From: Daniel J. Matyola danmaty...@gmail.com Subject: Re: OT: Go Pro Thanks for you comments, David. There undoubtedly are annoying videos out there done with the GoPro, but probably no more than are made with any other camera or video camera. You said you don't know what you would like to achieve with it. The best GoPro videos I have seen are ones that capture an experience, for example sky diving, dirt bike racing or ski jumping. There are several activities I enjoy that I would like to capture digitally, but I feel would not be suited for my M-5 II S. In 11 days, we leave for a month on Maui. While there, I do some snorkeling and scuba diving. Although I have a film underwater camera and a digital one, I have never been able to capture the experience adequately. I also will swim with sea turtles once or twice out there, another event I believe may be suited for the GoPro. While I certainly intend to use my Pentax DSLR on whale watches, since the action is sometimes extended, that is another time I intend to try the GoPro. I would like to take some decent videos of the surfers and wind surfers at Ho'okipa. Once or twice a week I will rise early to paddle with the Kihei Canoe Club. We often see whales, dolphins and turtles out on the Pacific, but with the paddle in my hands, a camera I can strap to my chest or head would be quite convenient. The waterproof case is also a big positive for me. I don't really see it as replacing any of the DSLR shooting I expect to do, but I hope it will add another dimension to my efforts to capture the beauty and the spirit of a place I love. Cathode ray tube TVs display interlaced images. All LCD and LED and Plasma TVs display progressive images - they convert on the fly in real time to progressive as you view. For web viewing any interlaced footage needs to be converted into progressive footage otherwise you will see nasty horizontal artifacts on any moving images. So it may be as well to shoot progressive (eg 1080p) with the gopro as you will no doubt want to share the video for viewing on computers or other LCD screens. Shooting at 720p is another option, less resolution but for web viewing, not a problem. That's interesting but it makes me wonder why we'd ever shoot interlaced if all the end use nowadays is progressive. Note that there are settings for 'wide, medium, narrow' and these relate to field of view. The gopro lens is fixed and cannot be zoomed, except by this method. So if the image is too wide for your taste or needs, set to medium for a less distorted image. Knowing nothing about Gopro cameras, this is also interesting to me. Only because I see so much footage that annoys me because of a fisheye effect. Do the narrower views eliminate the distortion or just reduce it? FWIW a lot of other companies are coming out with action cameras now, eg Shimano and Garmin. I'm not sure if Contour is still around. It's good to see some more companies getting involved. I wouldn't mind playing with one of these things but when I think a bit more seriously I just don't know what I'd want to achieve with it. Re: Go Pro
Dan, I have a Go Pro that I've used a bit and find the results to be very good. I've used it on an elastic headmount when I ran a 4 dog sled in an 8 mile race along the southern shore of Lake Superior in early January a few years ago - it was in the 0 to 10 degree F range and it still had power at the end of the race - about 55 minutes of usage - I was concerned about battery life in the low temps but it was not an issue. Also used it in a car rally, suction cupped to the hood of my Boxster. Gave good results, although the audio picked up more wind noise than I'd like - still acceptable. In both cases I used the Go Pro mounting products - the headband mount and their suction cup mount, although I did tether the camera to the car also - just in case. It gives surprisingly good results considering the size and cost. I don't use it enough to be real familiar with the menus so I keep the instructions handy to decipher the menu. I've only used it to record video and have no idea about stills captured with it. I'd suggest you take it out and try different setting to judge which give you the results your looking for. A fun little camera. Kenneth Waller http://www.pentaxphotogallery.com/kennethwaller - Original Message - From: Daniel J.
