2015-10-26 Thread Bruce Walker
You have my condolences, Ken. Both my 16-50 and 50-135 are awaiting
repair for dead SDM.

One thing you could do is buy a 645Z because Pentax extends warranty
support to your other Pentax bodies and lenses for the life of your
645Z support too. I plan to get my lenses repaired under that
arrangement.

You may not view this as cost-effective, however. :)

I bought a 16-50 a few years ago from another list member and it worked
flawlessly until a few weeks ago, when I was on a trip and the autofocus
completely failed. When I was packing it up to send to Precision for
repair, I noticed a switch on the side of the lens where the slider was
point to the MF position rather than the AF position.
Moving the switch back to AF repaired the Auto Focus. You may want to
double check the switch on yours.

A couple weeks later the lens failed again for another reason and in a
way that made me think my camera body had died, but that is yet another
story.

PUG Themes for 2016 - The Shortlist

2015-10-26 Thread Brian Walters
G'day all

Here's the almost final shortlist:

Golden Hour
In Silhouette
A Fork in the Road
Black and white
Iconic Places
Hands
History
World Photo Day
Reflection
Rush Hour
Tranquillity
Up

There were several additional suggestions, as follows. I haven't
included these in the above list but happy to consider substituting one
or more - otherwise they'll go into the mix for 2017:

Serious
Shadow
Wildcard
Unfinished
Halves
Into the dark
The cut
Other people's photos, re-imagined

Cheers

And, of course, it's entirely the EPA's fault that an abandoned mine had
been festering for almost a hundred years, leaking "toxic water at a
rate of 50 to 250 gallons a minute" even before the EPA sent a
contractor's crew to investigate remediating the existing leakage.

Chopping down an entire mountain has (to say the least) rather far

nice presentation, good to see some of the context (visitor center, scale model)

i've been there, and i agree with some other replies the wholesale
destruction of the mountain is astonishing to view, but i put it in
perspective because this is actually a tiny impact compared to many other,
less-often criticized, human projects; personally, i find Mt. Rushmore more
controversial as it is on land that was taken by the U.S. in the breaking of
a treaty, so the sculpture overtly symbolizes white man's conquests

the backstory of the Crazy Horse monument is almost more interesting than
the monument itself

Yes, it's the EPA's fault, they were told, by industry experts, not to
fuck with it. That the cofferdam was unstable, and could be easily
breached. Yet, the EPA persisted in fucking with it, until it was
breached. Thus changing the problem from one of local contamination to
one of regional contamination.

Ghostbusters was prescient

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8vxEimC3HME

If a private company did this the ensuing reaction would mean the end of
the company, (as an aside, the executives and engineers responsible
would most likely be fired, as damage control, not to the environment
true, but in the forlorn hope of company survival). In this case no one
will even lose their job, government is exceeding bad at policing
itself. It is good at policing private industry, and I'm in favor of
that, under most circumstances.

And, of course, it's entirely the EPA's fault that an abandoned mine had
been festering for almost a hundred years, leaking "toxic water at a
rate of 50 to 250 gallons a minute" even before the EPA sent a
contractor's crew to investigate remediating the existing leakage.

Based on the track records, Governments are a poor choice to make such

be sued.

I'm not a "let the government do everything" type of guy (despite a

government interfering in our day-to-day lives.

But who better than the government to decide on environmental and land
use issues like this? And if not the government, then who else?

Chopping down an entire mountain has (to say the least) rather far
reaching and long term consequences. Interested parties go far beyond
private land owners; society at large has a say in something like this.
