Re: In-body lens aberration correction, noise reduction etc. Yes or No?
On some cameras, lens corrections are embedded in the raw files and automatically applied by raw converters that honor the lens correction metadata. Not all raw converters allow you to disable the lens corrections. Nor should you, because such cameras and lenses are designed to be used with lens correction as part of the total imaging system and won't perform as well without it. Noise reduction in-camera usually means two things: - "Long exposure noise reduction" is most typically dark frame subtraction where beyond a certain exposure length the camera makes the exposure, then immediately collects noise data from the sensor without opening the shutter in a similar length exposure in order to model the noise alone. It uses that to subtract out the noise in the captured image. - "Noise filtering" is normally a post-capture process applied to the RGB/JPEG rendering process. It operates much as noise reduction processing does in various image processing apps in post. On many cameras, filtering can be adjusted for strength and both can be turned off entirely. On others, there are no such options. When I have the option, I usually leave long exposure noise reduction on but turn off noise filtering. Long exposure noise reduction can be a serious pain when you're working with very long exposures, however. G > On May 14, 2016, at 2:11 PM, Paul Stenquistwrote: > > I think you have it right. In-body lens aberration correction, noise reduction etc. Yes or No?
A couple of days ago Bob Sullivan said this: > Yes, the K-1 came with lens corrections turned on, but it doesn't seem > to effect processing time in camera. Then yesterday in his eNewsletter Tim Grey strongly advocated for the use of in-camera noise reduction for long exposures. Well, earlier in the week I had been going through the menus on the K-1 doing the initial setup. My longstanding bias has been to turn off lens corrections, noise reduction, Highlight and Shadow Correction. And now in addition I get to turn off Clarity and Skin Tone adjustments. After seeing Bob’s and then Tim’s unrelated comments, I thought I would try and think this through. IIRC, one of the bases for my bias against such own-camera processing was that they only affected jpg files anyway, I don’t shoot jpg, so why risk processing time on something that has no value. Another of my assumptions has been that Lightroom or similar on my full-up computer is able to deploy more sophisticated image processing routines than is feasible on the ittybitty processor in the camera. I dug into the K-1 manual and also went back to the K-3 manual. These are my “findings”: 1. With the K-1 the manual says that the lens correction information is saved in a separate file when shooting RAW, and that information is applied during [in-camera] processing of the RAW to jpg image. So, irrelevant unless you shot jpegs. Turn Off. 2. I find no indiction of what happens to Clarity and Skin Tone adjustments but suspect that they are jpeg only. Turn Off. 3. We know that HDR in-camera is a merging of multiple images, so here both RAW and jpeg files are affected. Turn Off, mostly. 4. Pixel Shift and Astrotracer functions also change the RAW and jpeg image capture. Turn Off except for special unique circumstances. 5. Long-exposure and High-ISO noise reduction change the images. I am not sure about this one. 6. Highlight correction? Shadow correction? Do these affect the RAW image or just jpeg? Do they do any harm? Do they do more good than you could accomplish with a simple slider in Lightroom? I would appreciate feedback on the validity of my assumptions and my conclusions. stan -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

FSF computers, a little late or very early
I would have posted this last night, but it was a pretty rough week and as they say, my get up and go, got up and went. Some good news, the septic system problems turned out to just be a bad check valve rather than a totally failed septic system. When things go wrong, I tend to assume the worst, so that any news I get from then on is more likely to be good news. In the past year, before I stumbled on some great deal for upgrading whole systems, I did a couple of disk upgrades. The drive in my 24 inch iMac (ca 2007) died. It has a great monitor, and it seemed like dropping a 500g SSD in it would make it a good system for friends to use when they are visiting, and also for showing off my photos at parties. The one downside is that it seems to not read the drive temp and has the fan on all of the time. Make offer. I also have a quad core mac mini, with 16G of ram, a 2 TB SSD and a 2 TB spinny inside of it. I also have the two drives that constituted the fusion drive, that I took out of it. Doing this conversion was quite a bit of work. The Samsung 850 Evo 2TB is selling for about $700 at Fry's (the price seems to have gone up), a 2 TB spinny drive is about $140, the kit from OWC is about $40. The biggest downside of this system is that it only supports one 2560 pixel monitor, though with a 27" thunderbolt and a 23" 1920x1080 mounted vertically, it's a very nice system as long as you are saner than I about the number of photos that you take and store on external drives. I think that about $2,000 is a fair price for the system. Note that with the thicker 2TB SSD, it was not a trivial replacement, and I had to leave one of the drives wedged in, but not screwed down. Also, my 27" Thunderbolt monitor will not work with my new system, and I need the money more than I need an external monitor for a laptop. They seem to go for $500-600 on craigslist, and this one has a chip missing from a bit of the glass over the bezel. It doesn't affect performance, just appearance if you look closely at it. I'd like to get $500 for it. I also have the Dell U2311H which I'm using as the vertical monitor, that I'd be willing to sell, but am not actively looking to sell. -- Larry Colen l...@red4est.com (postbox on min4est) http://red4est.com/lrc -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.
