On 5/19/2016 10:33 PM, Christine Aguila wrote: Wow never heard of these scams before. Cheers, Christine I've gotten the IRS scam call. It's not even a real person, just a bunch of phrases strung together by a computer with pauses in wrong places and a demand that you call a certain phone number. But I get the same damn call again and again and again. I've had it come in as many as 10 times a day (based on the snippets of it on my answering machine). I just delete those messages from the answering machine. If the IRS really wants to get in touch with you, they'll send you a letter by certified mail telling you when and where to appear for the audit. I'm getting "final expenses insurance", Medicare supplements & prescription plans. Multiple calls per day with the same robot on the other end. There's two ways to deal with them - either don't say anything after you pick up so the robot gets confused & disconnects or you can answer the qualifying question (Are you over 65?) with "No" in hopes the logic tree it's using will somehow decide you're not a good prospect. Neither one seems to work. If there was some program that would allow me to take control of the computer on the other end of the robo-call so I could nuke it, I'd be interested. I'll probably take a close look at one of those call blocking devices. Is there one that I can program with the numbers I want to allow through that will block everything else? -- Science - Questions we may never find answers for. RE: OT: Telemarketers
I set up a MagicJack using the same number I've had for years. All calls go to voice mail. Anything important they leave a message. The telemarketers and scammers never leave a message. I get an email with the voice message attached. All other calls are handled on our cell phones. The house phone is heavily muted. It can be heard, you can call out but actually we don't use it at all. Much cheaper than ATT landline. We've been operating this way for about 5 years. I don't answer my cell phone unless I recognize the caller. Of course we all have smartphones and that costs a fortune. ATT dsl costs a fortune as does cable internet. We have ATT dsl for now. Re: OT: Telemarketers
In truth I write only relatively benign scripts for car dealers trying to get their lease customers to re-up and/or turn in their car early. Much of it is email with only a small percentage of telemarketing. It's all commerce, but I do miss the days of straightforward walk in negotiations. Re: OT: Telemarketers
I have a fairly sophisticated anti-telemarketer system running, a legacy from my anti-spam days when I was an enthusiast. (I wouldn't attempt this project now. I only have to maintain it a couple of times a year.) I'm running Asterisk -- a software PBX -- and I have a SIP device connecting my phone line to my house TCP/IP network. When a call arrives, Asterisk monitors it and forwards the Caller ID to my script. That farms out searches to the net and checks my white and black lists for a match. It also checks the published North American dial plan lists to see if the number is even legitimately registered to a telco. Many are spoofed and are 100% bogus. If it determines that the caller is a likely telemarketer, it picks up the call and plays a pre-recorded "I'm sorry, the number you have called is not in service" message to the hapless caller. I manually maintain the blacklist, but I only have to lookup a caller once every few days. The rest are automatically nuked. After a number of rings it switches into answering-machine mode, and takes the call normally. We're rarely bothered by tele-spammers. The schedules were changed within 2-3 days. Passive aggressive behavior is not always a bad thing. stan > On May 19, 2016, at 4:13 PM, Doug Brewerwrote: > > Scammer: The factory warranty on your car has run out. > > Me: Really? That's tragic. Re: OT: Telemarketers
I long ago got over the notion that I needed to be responsive to phone calls. We haven’t answered the phone in years. Well, a few exceptions but hardly ever. When we had Caller ID we would only answer if a known caller. Now we have the phone ringers turned off, don’t even know there is a call until we hear the answer machine attempt to answer. 95% of robocallers, scammers, and fund raisers hang up without leaving a message, without even waiting for our answer to play through. The occasional caller we want to talk to, we either pick up while they are leaving their message or we call them back. I follow pretty much the same routine with my cell phone. stan > On May 19, 2016, at 3:00 PM, Johnwrote: > > WTF is going on with telemarketers. > > I have an unlisted number. So basically, expose for the maximum highlight detail and the shadows should still be *ok*. The true test of this would be in a very dark situation, the higher ISO would give you better results, especially if the brighter portions are pretty dim. The analog amplifier inside (and even in ISO invariant cameras) will still get you a better amplification of the darker portions than the pseudo amplification using the digital values through post processing. If the camera is "ISO Invariant" (and there are lists available in the links below) you'll get *exactly the same* noise from underexposing and compensating in post as you would from cranking up the camera's ISO setting and shooting the correct exposure. Re: Can higher ISO give you more info about a low contrast scene.
I've shot extensively with both K5 and K3. A 2EV push creates some shadow noise. If you're okay with that it's fine, but I find I can retain highlights at a correct or nearly correct exposure. Of course how one meters has a lot to do with that. Paul via phone > On May 19, 2016, at 6:47 AM, Zos Xaviuswrote: > > The K-3 and K-5 can easily sustain a 2ev boost in the shadows. I'll have to study these in more depth when I'm not packing for a track day. Thanks. I can think of one reason to not just shoot at base ISO. Lightroom only allows a few stops of exposure compensation, and it is very easy to exceed that range. It does seem, however, that there is little downside to picking an exposure triangle in manual, that may be a stop or two under to preserve highlights, and effectively do your Tav adjustment in post. This will be very helpful when photographing at the dojo. I have noticed that when I bracketed in Tav mode, by the time I finished adjustments the differences between the exposures were very subtle. Now I better understand why. There is some fun physics to learn here in order to optimize sensor performance. -- Larry Colen l...@red4est.com (postbox on min4est) http://red4est.com/lrc >>> >>> >>> -- >>> PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List >>> PDML@pdml.net >>> http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net >>> to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and >>> follow the directions. >> >> -- >> PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List >> PDML@pdml.net >> http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net >> to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and >> follow the directions. > > -- > PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List > PDML@pdml.net > http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net > to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow > the directions. -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.
Re: Can higher ISO give you more info about a low contrast scene.
The K-3 and K-5 can easily sustain a 2ev boost in the shadows. The K-5 more so. I underexpose by 2ev quite often to retain highlights and push in post. Firmware 1.10 for K-1, and LR tethering plugin available
There is a firmware update for the K-1 already, related to tethering only: http://www.ricoh-imaging.co.jp/english/support/download_digital.html For thethering with Lightroom, you also need the latest plugin (software, below on that same page) Regards, JvW -- Jan van Wijk; http://www.dfsee.com Flickr : jvw_pentax -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.
