Re: PESO 2016 - 096, 097 - GDG

2016-05-23 Thread Ken Waller
Obviously the differentially sized tires rule out rotation which would give
you more life, but 30K miles out of sport tires isn't too bad. I got 20K out
of a set of Michellin Pilot Sports on the back of my Boxster.
FWIW, I've had good experiences with tires from The Tire
Rack -http://www.tirerack.com/content/tirerack/desktop/en/homepage.html -
cost wise especially if your tire vendors aren't super competitive.

I became a proponent of Michellin tires in the late 60's when I put some
Michellin X's on my 59 Austin Healey Sprite, the improvement in handling
over the removed bias tires was astounding. Been a believe in them ever
since. IMO opinion they're the best for performance and durability.
Was bummed out when I discovered Michillin doesn't yet make a tire for my
GTS.

The rears are actually worn smooth, well below the minimum tread depth.
They become somewhat unsafe as a matter of road hazards ... Punctures and
such when they're so thin. Never mind the odd fix-it ticket for driving on
worn-out tires if a peace officer wants to brighten your day. I just
haven't been watching as carefully as I usually do. Too many other things
taking up my attention.

As to the price, well, these are differentially sized, low profile, high
speed sporty car tires (for '00 Mercedes SLK230 K). They run a little over
$100 per tire, add shipping, mount and balance, old tire disposal fee,
surtax, sales tax, and four wheel alignment inspection The cost will
total between $690 and $760 by the time the job is done.

The tires that have just worn out were Continental ExtremeContact DW
205/55ZR16 91W-225/50ZR16 92W "Max Performance-Summer" tires. They are
rated for 25000 mile lifespan on this weight car; I eked 30,000 out of
them. Sticky and lovely on warm and wet roads, pretty dicey on frozen
tarmac though.

Unfortunately, I hunted around and the rears are out of stock everywhere
at present. So I'm giving the Goodyear Sport All-Season V-rated (same
sizes) a shot this round. Tread pattern looks similar, they're rated for a
bit more mileage (30-35K miles), and feedback on them from other SLK230
owners seems positive. Ride quality is rated in the same ballpark, noise a
bit quieter, etc. On the numbers and specs, they're a toss-up. They're
about $20 more than the Contis, which if I can get another 5-10K out of
them is another toss up.

Fun fun fun ... ;-)

Godfrey, tire tread depth at the wear bar doesn't necessarily mean they

them thru the summer but replace them as winter approaches.
A trade off of low tread depth is better adhesion, all other things
equal. However tire noise is worse

The tires? Ach, I was expecting to do them this year anyway, just taken
a little by surprise by the rapidity of their decline.

I agree. HDR is a special effect. Just go with something simpler and
more natural looking. (You can make HDR look fairly natural, but it
still takes more work than the "two exposures and a mask" technique.)

A previous PDML annual had some issues, was replaced by Blurb and I was told to
keep the original.

Well, this is weird...

2016-05-23 Thread Rick Womer
Yesterday I posted a PESO, "PIFA Old Cycle."

My photo audience is modest: usually I get about 70 views; a rare shot will hit
120 or so.

This shot, though, has clocked 1059 views.

A Google Image search doesn't bring up my photo. There were only 5 comments on
this list.

Any ideas where all of these views are coming from???

Sheesh. Now I'm really lusting. A lot.

Re: PESO 2016 - 096, 097 - GDG

2016-05-23 Thread Godfrey DiGiorgi
The rears are actually worn smooth, well below the minimum tread depth. They
become somewhat unsafe as a matter of road hazards ... Punctures and such when
they're so thin. Never mind the odd fix-it ticket for driving on worn-out tires
if a peace officer wants to brighten your day. I just haven't been watching as
carefully as I usually do. Too many other things taking up my attention.

As to the price, well, these are differentially sized, low profile, high speed
sporty car tires (for '00 Mercedes SLK230 K). They run a little over $100 per
tire, add shipping, mount and balance, old tire disposal fee, surtax, sales
tax, and four wheel alignment inspection The cost will total between $690
and $760 by the time the job is done.

The tires that have just worn out were Continental ExtremeContact DW 205/55ZR16
91W-225/50ZR16 92W "Max Performance-Summer" tires. They are rated for 25000
mile lifespan on this weight car; I eked 30,000 out of them. Sticky and lovely
on warm and wet roads, pretty dicey on frozen tarmac though.

Unfortunately, I hunted around and the rears are out of stock everywhere at
present. So I'm giving the Goodyear Sport All-Season V-rated (same sizes) a
shot this round. Tread pattern looks similar, they're rated for a bit more
mileage (30-35K miles), and feedback on them from other SLK230 owners seems
positive. Ride quality is rated in the same ballpark, noise a bit quieter, etc.
On the numbers and specs, they're a toss-up. They're about $20 more than the
Contis, which if I can get another 5-10K out of them is another toss up.

Fun fun fun ... ;-)

Godfrey, tire tread depth at the wear bar doesn't necessarily mean they need
to be replaced. If the wear is even across the tread and you you're not
anticipating significant rain they can still be safely driven on awhile
longer. If these were mine, here in Michigan I'd probably drive them thru
the summer but replace them as winter approaches.
A trade off of low tread depth is better adhesion, all other things equal.
However tire noise is worse.

Octopus is a local specialty in Mykonos, and they know how to do it
well. The traditional way of tenderizing it is to slam it against a
rock 100 times, but I suspect they have easier methods today. In any
event, this dish was quite tasty, as were the caramelized onions
served with it. A glass of Ouzo completes the experience.

A glass of Ouzo tends to help, doesn't it?

Yeah, but be careful. Ouzo is sneaky and it'll creep up on ya'.

Greece is a disaster, especially Athens. Locals are allowed to
withdraw only a small amount of cash on any given day, but there is no
problem for foreigners. Credit cards are widely accepted in all areas
where tourists are found. The beautiful park across the street from
our first Athens hotel was over-run with homeless people, garbage, and
graffiti. The cops just stood in a group and watched. One American I
met ventured on the subway, where he was assaulted and his wallet,
cash, credit cards and passport were taken. By-standers pointed our
one of the perpetrators, but the police were disinterested.

It seems that tourism is the only real industry. Yet, there are
frequent strikes.that affect tourists. A couple of weeks ago, the
Acropolis was closed because of a strike. Transit strikes occur
regularly, and our second Athens hotel had a strike on the day of our
departure. There are many vacant and abandoned buildings in Athens,
and almost everything, except the Acropolis and the Tomb of the
Unknown Soldiers is covered with rude graffiti. The current political
unrest in Turkey has force cancellation of some cruise stops in
Turkish ports, also impacting the Greek tourist industry.

I am glad we went to Greece this year, as I fear it may cease to
function completely in the near future.

Good news: This year's copy of the annual has arrived.

Better news: Y'all are stepping up your game even faster than my
expectations are rising. The book looks fantastic.

Other news: When I saw page 7, I was amused by Mark's creativity in
making the page look like the image from an old rangefinder, with the
lower half of the page darker and shifted a bit to the side. Then when
I saw Toine's picture on page 44 where something similar had been done,
I got a bit suspicious. Looking on the online preview, it turns out that
Mark was not as clever as I'd thought. Unfortunately Blurb seems to have
messed up printing all three books (I opened Nicole and Marco's copies
to check). I took photos of the misprints, and will contact blurb. I
hope that they'll just send replacements without my needing to mail
these copies back.

But in the department of boring and repetitive, as everyone else has
said, it's an another amazing job, both the photography and the
presentation.

In a world where images are taken and immediately shared on social

I particularly like this cyan image and (although it moves away from

Re: Some people are just crazy

Some people have a mind-set believing anything that is not compulsory by
law should be forbidden. And that it's their job to to decide what's
forbidden and to enforce it.

Having no common sense, they always err on the side of believing the
worst about people.

 Thanks!

It's about twice the cost of shooting 6x6 film and having it processed, which
isn't too too bad, but still an expense to be managed. After a flurry of
snapping about to learn the film and the camera, I tend to slow way down and
then I usually get most out of a pack as keepers. It's the education cost
that's steep. Can't be helped if you love the way instant film looks, which I
do, so I meter it out and enjoy it. I just feel lucky that someone—the folks
who founded The Impossible Project—cared enough to keep the format and the
cameras alive. Photography is richer for their hard work and investment. I hope
the business thrives and they are rewarded financially as well.

The tires? Ach, I was expecting to do them this year anyway, just taken a
little by surprise by the rapidity of their decline. They were fine four months
ago. Oh well, they'll be fine again on Friday. I chose a slightly different
tire this time, one with a bit more tread life potential. I hope they work
well.

Octopus is a local specialty in Mykonos, and they know how to do it

Re: PESO: Mykonos Sunset

2016-05-23 Thread Daniel J. Matyola
Thanks, Gonz.

PESO 2016 - 096, 097 - GDG

2016-05-23 Thread Godfrey DiGiorgi
Another memento with Impossible I-1 and the cyanographic film:

  https://flic.kr/p/HqYPXp

And an exposure with some regular 600 color (v3 beta) to show that "normal"
photos are also possible with the I-1:

  https://flic.kr/p/HqYPKR

I ordered twelve more packs of color film yesterday… 96 exposures for roughly
$250. There's a reason to sharpen your eye …! :-)

Of course, I placed that order two hours before I discovered that the tires on
my car have worn themselves down past the tread safety marks, so there goes
another $800. =8^o

enjoy!

Re: PESO: Aegean Feast

2016-05-23 Thread Daniel J. Matyola
Thanks, Jack, Mark, Paul, Christine, Alan and Bob for looking and commenting.

Octopus is quite good, when done right. My first experience with it
was a smoked tentacle I purchased in a park in Japan about 50 years
ago. That was a bit chewy.

Octopus is really nice. The first time I had it was in Greece, and I found the
tentacle suckers rather off-putting to begin with, but after the first taste it
no longer bothered me.

I won't post here what they were yet , but some of you saw them..

Re: PESO 2016 - 094 - GDG

2016-05-23 Thread Godfrey DiGiorgi
Thanks Malcolm! I'm glad you're enjoying my instant film obsession!

These cameras are a completely different way of seeing. I'm not sure they stand
up to huge enlargement; the prints are like little jewels. They pull you in.
I'll tell you also: they're a pain to scan and present, and take a bit of work
to have them look anywhere near as good as the originals.

Fun stuff! I ordered a bunch of new color film today.

onwards!
