In other words the suspension is very stiff and weight transfer and suspension

I've been thinking about this, and would be inclined to go at it from a
slightly different angle. I'd break the course up into units, and would
list the equipment needed for each unit.

Composition: A camera.

Digital exposure: A camera that can create histograms, with full manual
control over exposure

Selecting focal length: lenses, or cameras capable of a specific range
of Angle of views. (35mm equiv 28 or wider 40-60, 85 or longer)

Digital processing: A camera capable of shooting raw, or a film camera
and a scanner.

Studio: Manual exposure, histogram or strobe meter(with film), ability
to trigger strobes (pc jack, hot shoe/wireless trigger, manual strobe
with IR filter ...)

macro photography: camera+lens(+diopter?) capable of at least 1:2
magnification.

I would also *strongly* suggest that their life would be a lot easier
with an interchangeable lens camera, capable of shooting raw, with the
following lenses, and list approximate prices that they might be able to
find for the equipment on craigslist.

I might also suggest which assignments that they might be able to share
specialty gear on.

Lisa and I traveled to London in January and had a meet-up with Bob W.
and Chris Mitchell at a pub called the Dovetail recommended by Bob.
Unfortunately it turned out to be jam packed on a Friday night so we
had to go elsewhere for a meal. But Lisa and I returned the following
Monday and found it much quieter, so we were able to enjoy a meal and
some great Belgian ale. Also, I was able to shoot photos of the alley
way where their entrance is.

Re: PESO: Black Widow

2016-08-08 Thread Paul Stenquist
He detunes it to about 1000 horsepower for normal driving, about the same as a
Bugatti Veyron. That’s accomplished mainly by reducing the amount of
supercharger boost. All of the suspension and steering gear is engineered for
stability. In other words the suspension is very stiff and weight transfer and
suspension travel are well controlled. It’s a far cry from the original 1969
car. The rear differential is electronically locking, like that of the GT S
Mercedes, and the rear tires are very wide and sticky. It’s quite manageable in
a straight line. Of course if you get one tire in some wet stuff and hammer the
throttle or try to accelerate hard on an uneven road, you’re going to get in
trouble rapidly. The guy drives an 18-wheeler cross country, so fast cars don’t
scare him.

Here’s the rear view.

I saw someone do that in a Ferrari Testarossa once. They started too fast,
spinning the wheels, lost the back end, spun in the road and crashed into
several parked cars, causing considerable damage, and embarrassment to themself.

Worth mentioning that that area is one of London's main centres of hipster bike

Re: Photographing on ice

2016-08-08 Thread Rick Womer
Igor, I've never shot in an ice rink, but I've done a fair amount with
really strange lighting (allegedly white, not colored lights shining
on bands), often from mixed sources.

I shoot RAW, and either before or after the shoot I pull out a plastic
grey card I carry in my bag, and wander about the venue shooting it.
Then I use the color temperature eyedropper in Lightroom to correct
the RAW image based on the appropriate grey card reading.

If you hunger for some tedium, you can use the Brush tool to correct
different areas of the photo differently.

I think my list would be restricted to manual exposure and raw format.
If you go for interchangeable lenses I'd add a large-aperture prime.

And since it's us you're asking, it should be a Pentax or Ricoh, of
course. :-)

Re: K-1 vs K-3

2016-08-08 Thread Gonz
Its probably worth some experiments. I find that AF on my K5 slows down
rapid fire shots. If I turn it off, its way faster. So it might not be
the buffer. Try taking a bunch of shots without AF and any other
automation off, i.e. exposure, etc.

Re: August PUG is up

Ken Waller's "Daybreak" is my favorite. The rhythm of the repeating
patterns is the water is mesmerizing, and the diagonal compositions grabs
and hold the eye. The sunrise colors are enhanced by the dark brooding
mountains beneath them, and the wake of the boar in the lower right gives
the sense of motion through the tranquility of the scene.

I was fascinated by Malcolm's "Long Shadow," since I have taken a number of
macroscian images. This one works quite well, to my eye.

It's a pity there isn't something like the K1000 in digital. Nowadayd the cheap
cameras are fully automatic. The non-P cameras start complicated and to get
simplicity you have to pay increasingly large amounts of money. The world's
turned upside down.

28-105 on the k-1 and the 28-75 on the k-3.

I'm in the middle of the long slow job of processing the photos. But,
I've noticed a few things. First of all, in full frame mode, the K-3 is
just too slow for "rapid fire". In crop mode, it is noticeably slower
than the k-3, but definitely fast enough. However, when the action
really heats up (like in randori where several people are simultaneously
attacking one person), even in crop mode, the buffer on the K-1 is just
too small.

On the flip side, even in crop mode, the photos are a LOT cleaner than
the images from the k-3. I wish it were possible for me to just buy some
larger ram chips and solder them in and the K-1 would be the best Pentax
crop sensor camera by far.

I find myself wishing that they come out with a new top of the APS line
which is basically a K-1 with an APS version of the ff sensor, and a
bigger buffer, with all of the buttons and other UI just the same so
that my fingers don't get confused swapping between the two cameras.

Seen in order:

- pink phlox
- Japanese anemone buds
- emerging flowers of a Hosta
- turtlehead
- ripening tomato

I quite like the second and third ones. I can't believe there are no
photos of Amaryllis belladonna.
