You might take a look at this one.

I am considering buying a monopod and some type of device that allows
quick and easy flipping between horizontal and vertical positions.
Larry has suggested a ball head as those typically have a slit that
allow to tilt the camera by 90 degrees.
That is a possibility, but: 1. I would be overpaying for the
functionality I don't need. (Or maybe I am not looking at the right ball
heads? Are there any inexpensive ones?)
and
2. A ball head has more degrees of freedom, which complicates the
situation when I need just to flip it from landscape to portrait
orientation.

I've been thinking about something that is similar to the brackets used
for mounting flashes, but just for the camera. Such a "bracket" would
flip between just two orientations (on a tripod or monopod).
Do such devices exist? Any pointers?

Thank you!

I use and leave a Stroboframe 300-115 Vertaflip PHD Camera Platform
mounted to the heavy duty tripod I carry in the car .
Might be a bit much for a monopod ..
I've been aiming to getting L brackets to use more portably.

The Acratech Universal L Bracket is why I almost never buy anything but a

Kirk does make a nice monopod head, has fewer degrees of freedom than a full

On a monopod a lot of the quality issues are a lot less important.
Ball heads can be swapped between monopod and tripod.
The freedom of motion of a ball head that is loosely locked down can be
very, very handy when shooting on a monopod. Particularly when for
various reasons you can't put the foot of the monopod directly under the

Your old days were different to mine. I never shot Kodachrome 25 - I
was almost exclusively Fujichrome 50 or 100 (occasionally Velvia).

Thanks for the comment in your other post - I thought about cropping off
the blue hull on the right but it also crops off too much of the fishing
boat. I wish I'd taken another frame so that the final image wasn't so
tightly cropped on the right.

A bit expensive. Could buy a couple of manual K mount lenses and a
cheaper adaptor for that money.

I've upgraded to the X-Pro 2. The OVF is an improvement over the 1 and
the hybrid, where you get a tiny EVF in the corner is useful. No
headaches for me!

Like Cotty I take a couple of spares with me. Good for a day's shooting.

On my little Oly, I disable the rear LCD by turning it face-in, and then
leave the EVF off until activated with the proximity sensor
automatically - it cuts down quite appreciably on battery usage. That
said, I carry 2 charged spares!

Re: Fuji body, Pentax lens

2016-10-01 Thread P.J. Alling

That depends on what you mean by full functionality.

There are K adapters for m43 and Sony E that have aperture rings to
allow the use of K lenses without aperture rings to be used stopped
down, but they won't allow shutter preferred automation, I don't know
about Fuji X mount but I assume that someone makes similar adapters for
that system as well.

The viewfinders amp up so that it /looks/ like you're getting open
aperture metering, buy you're really not. Some people prefer that,
since you're getting a full time DOF preview.

No adapter now made will allow any Pentax AF lens to auto focus when
used on a Fuji or any other mirrorless camera system.

There is no power for the lens so those with "advanced" features such as
the newish DA 18-50 with focus by wire and the new DA 50-300 with the
electrical aperture control won't have full functionality. The former
is in fact probably completely useless in that application, the latter
is crippled in the same way that it is on any Pentax camera that doesn't
have power contacts and the updated firmware, would be.

However if you're using a manual focus, manual /mechanical/ aperture K
mount lens, the Fuji with adapter would be more transparent, more like
using an actual Pentax camera with a aperture simulator. I've often
been tempted by the Sony A7 series for just that reason. I can't
remember why I didn't really like them when I tried one out. The Fuji
cameras are just delightful to hold.

I'm afraid I only ever used fully manual lenses on my Fuji camera (an X-
E1). I have no experience of Pentax autofocus lenses, except for the
18-55 kit lens on my wife's *istD-s camera.

I have since sold my X-E1 and am now the proud owner of an Olympus Pen
F. I use that with just four lenses in my kit bag: Samyang 12/2, Pentax
24/2.8, Pentax 50/1.4 and Tokina 90/2.5 macro - all manual focus lenses
with aperture rings.

I hope one day to be able to get a Voigtlander 10.5/.095 for my wide
angle but for now I'm the happiest I have been (photographically
speaking) for a long long time :-)

Weather today (Saturday) is good for being indoors ;-)

Thanks, Rick. I shall try to work on the color balance.
It was a very bright morning, and he was in the shade while I was in the
sun, That may have affected the colrs a bit.

It's more of a whisper over the tinnitus but that voice is definitely talking to

Googled "lens flair". Was not disappointed.

The OP has not come through to my inbox yet, so I reply to this one. :-)
Mark, what's the primary focus for the course? Is it technically inclined or
towards arts and visual communication?

Much prefer the wider view, but I would personally crop the bit of blue
boat far right.

Lovely!

K-1 firmware 1.30 crop mode test

2016-10-01 Thread Jos from Holland

I tested crop mode as follows:

K-1 with Sigma APS-C lens 8-16mm @ 16 mm
(@ 16mm the Sigma covers FF)

3 pictures of bookshelves filled with books:
FF gives 44.5 MB
APS-C mode gives 22.2 MB
1:1 mode gives 45 MB

So Mark Roberts suggestion is right: the camera adds just a cropping
specification to the raw file.
I expect, when shooting JPG there will be a proportional file size reduction
comparing 1:1 to FF
