I quite agree. I'd have taken the railings to get powder coated to give them
some sort of chance in the conditions.

We're using common names, while Dan is referring to Taxonomic

Dedicated bird watchers know the scientific classification down to the
sub-species, and can't understand why common names are good enough for
the rest of us.

the ground, but if you tell them you've seen a Turkey Buzzard, they'll
know what you mean right away.

Re: Buzzard Pair/Hint of Fall

2016-12-01 Thread John

I don't think they have vultures in the UK. We don't have Common
Buzzards in the U.S. The use of "Buzzard" for New World Vultures came
from English colonization in North America.

Seen from a distance, when they're soaring, the Black Vulture has a
similar appearance to the Common Buzzard English colonists would have known.

Where I grew up in the South-Eastern U.S., "Buzzard" was a common name
for the Black Vulture. Turkey Vultures were called Turkey Buzzards.

Re: Nice shot

2016-12-01 Thread Mark Roberts

>How did the cormorant end up as the PDML bird anyhow?

The Story of the Cormorant:
Way back in the mists of time, probably early in the first decade of
this century, a PDML member named Christian Skofteland was known for
some pretty damned good bird photography. One day he posted a nice
shot of a cormorant in front of a dramatic sky at sunset. Great shot,
but he lamented about the composition he'd been forced into (probably
due to objects that would have intruded into the image if he'd moved
the camera at all). Cotty pointed out that the extra space at the top
of the image would be ideal if it were to be used for the cover shot
of a magazine — the space was perfect for where the masthead would go.
To prove his point Cotty made a quick mock-up of how such a magazine
might look: http://www.robertstech.com/temp/cormorant-times.jpg

There followed a torrent of fake magazine covers from a great many
members of the PDML. But the first was "Cormorant Times" and that's
the one that has defined the PDML, for good or ill (or perhaps both),
ever since.

I just made a Blurb book that no one is going to buy except me!

2016-12-01 Thread Mark Roberts
OK, seriously, it's intended more as a portfolio piece than a book for
people to buy. I thought about making a portfolio in the standard way,
doing my own prints and everything and getting some kind of album or
box to put them in. But it just seemed like a hell of a lot of work
(and expense). So I decided to make a large Blurb book just for
myself. It's big (12" x 12") and printed on the most expensive paper
Blurb offers could order and with the most deluxe options available
(ImageWrap hardcover, special end papers, etc.). But, hey, if anyone
wants one... it can be yours for $250.00!

A turkey vulture is a vulture, not a buzzard. "Buzzard" is a term fro
various hawk species, especial of the genus Buteo. There are parts of the
US where the Turkey Vulture is called by some a buzzard or a turkey
buzzard, but ornithologically that is not correct, and no bird watcher
would refer to it as a buzzard.
