Re: PESO - Maui Sunset

2017-12-08 Thread Daniel J. Matyola
I really like that image. Where on Maui was it ta The tree looks familiar.

First, I love Maui and especially aui sunsets. I have photographed
hundreds of Maui sunsets myself.

Second, you have really captured the experience. All that is missing is
the glass of wine.

I love the color and the composition. The tree is well placed, land the
inclusion of the people enlivens the image.

You have really filled me with the Aloha spirit! 33 days, and I will be
there, with my glass on wine, watching the sun set over Lanai from
Keawakapu beach.

Re: OT: Coffee

2017-12-08 Thread Daniel J. Matyola
I have a client who owned a Holiday Inn franchise. A few years back, he was
notified that they were terminating a third of their franchises, and
established a list of upgrades that were being required in order to stay in
the system. My client made the grade, and installed the updates. Despite
that, he has since switched to one of the Marriott brands.

Re: K-5 Metadata Issue - solved

2017-12-08 Thread Brian Walters
It seems the problem isn't anything to do with the camera it's a bug in the
software I've been using for image management (Zoner Photo Studio 17). My
workflow has been to use ZPS17 to add descriptors/keywords etc and then send
images needing further processing from ZPS17 to Photoshop, but I've just
discovered that as soon as I save the descriptors in ZPS17, the Lens Info (and
presumably the full Maker Notes metadata) disappears.

Fortunately, I also have Zoner Photo Studio 18 (I prefer the interface of the
earlier version which is why I've been using it) Anyway, I've just tested some
images in ZPS18 and the bug has apparently been fixed - so I'll be using that
version in future.

Back to that drink...

Re: K-5 Metadata Issue

2017-12-08 Thread Brian Walters
Hi Zos

Thanks for the suggestions but things are becoming even weirder...

It seems that the camera is actually recording the Maker Notes. I just checked
the metadata on the SD card for recent images and all metadata is present, but
the Maker Notes are missing for those same images that had been copied across to
my hard drive.

What's even more frustrating is that I can't now reproduce the problem. I just
took a couple of photos, copied the images across to the hard drive - and all
metadata is present.

I need a drink...

Every once in a while something that sounds too good to be true...

2017-12-08 Thread Mark Roberts
...really is true.

Like a Nikon CoolScan LS-8000 medium format film scanner (4000dpi) for
$1200.

I've seen them going for far more than that. In fact, I've seen the
film carriers alone listed for $800! (No scanner included.) Yeah,
that's a bit unrealistic, but 1200 bucks for the scanner in excellent
condition with carriers for 35mm negs, 35mm slides and 120 is a great
deal.

But I checked out the seller and found he's been on eBay for a long
time, sold just a few items and all of them a photography-related. He
answered questions and clearly knew what he was talking about.

So I went for it. It arrived today and I'm impressed so far. Here's my
first scan (somewhat reduced in size — the original is almost 11,000 x
9000, ~97 megapixels, 536 megabytes as a TIFF in 16-bit color).

Try reflashing the firmware on it. It might just be something weird.
No lens data in lightroom either? I would guess not if exiftool isn't
reporting it.

You also might want to try cleaning the contacts on your camera to
make sure it is getting good communication first. You should be seeing
focal lenght information in the jpeg review on the camera if you press
the info button. If you are not the lens->camera connection is
suspect.

This has been the biggest snow in central Texas that I've seen in about a

The snow started late evening, went for a couple of hours, and stayed till
morning.
We used to see snow here 1-2 times per year, but except for one in 2013 that
lasted for half a day, it was usually staying for no more than 1-2 hours.
Surprisingly, the ISD didn't cancel the school this morning. (I suspect they

I understand, it is nothing special for many PDMLers who live up north, but a

Re: OT: Coffee

2017-12-08 Thread Ken Waller
Recently stayed at several Holiday Inn Expresses in several states and they
all rooms had the Curig capsule coffee makers along with several capsules of
different blends - not bad coffee and very convenient - more capsules easily
obtainable gratis at the front desk.

It appears that Holiday Inn has upped their game - all the H I's we stayed
in were new or recently renovated and had upscale furniture and were
spotless. When I traveled for work, H I's were very hit or mis - they were
either good to very good or poor and shoddy.

Those capsule machines seem to be real popular in offices where people
have different tastes in coffee. Either the break room supplies a variety
or people bring their own. It does cut down on the time it takes to doctor
up a cup to taste and eliminates the problem of that one asshole who
always takes the last cup and won't make a new pot.

At home I'm still using my 4-cup Mr. Coffee. It must be going on 40 years
old, because I got it for Christmas when I was still married. I have a
spare carafe in case I ever break the current one.

It requires special capsules, and they are not cheap, but they are

K-5 Metadata Issue

2017-12-08 Thread Brian Walters
This is a bit odd.

This morning I wanted to check the lens that I'd used on my K-5 a few weeks ago.
I opened the image in ExifTool and found the Lens field blank. Very strange, I
thought, because I've only been using AF lenses.

Anyway, on further checking I found that the entire Maker Notes section of the
metadata was absent and I know that it had been recorded in the past.

As near as I can make out, the camera stopped recording the Maker Notes in
November 2015. All previous images have the complete metadata - all subsequent
ones have no Maker Notes.

Anyone have any idea why this might be the happening?

Cheers

Re: December PUG is up!

Great Smokey Mountain National Park is a 95 miles as the crow flies (Mile High
Swinging Bridge to Newfound Gap) and according to this calculator, from an
altitude of 5280 ft the distance to the horizon is 89 miles.

http://www.ringbell.co.uk/info/hdist.htm

IF the weather is clear, you can see Charlotte (81.93 mi)from the top of GFM
and you can see Mount Mitchell(33.22 mi).

There's a city park in Boone, NC that's up on top of a mountain, and you can
see Grandfather Mountain from there and if the weather is right (low overcast)
all you'll see is the top of the mountain sticking out of a sea of clouds.

According to the NPS, the Blue Ridge Parkway "is technically a national /parkway/" ...
"However, both are operated by the National Park Service"

Re: OT: Coffee

2017-12-08 Thread John

Those capsule machines seem to be real popular in offices where people have
different tastes in coffee. Either the break room supplies a variety or people
bring their own. It does cut down on the time it takes to doctor up a cup to
taste and eliminates the problem of that one asshole who always takes the last
cup and won't make a new pot.

At home I'm still using my 4-cup Mr. Coffee. It must be going on 40 years old,
because I got it for Christmas when I was still married. I have a spare carafe
in case I ever break the current one.

PESO/GESO - snow in Texas

2017-12-08 Thread Igor PDML-StR

Hi All,

I've been busy with some travels and other things. But last night's even
got me pulling the camera out and quickly posting a few photos.

This has been the biggest snow in central Texas that I've seen in about a
decade.
The snow started late evening, went for a couple of hours, and stayed till
morning.
We used to see snow here 1-2 times per year, but except for one in 2013
that lasted for half a day, it was usually staying for no more than 1-2
hours.
Surprisingly, the ISD didn't cancel the school this morning. (I suspect
they were so shocked that they remained speechless. :-) )

I understand, it is nothing special for many PDMLers who live up north,
but a very special event (of the life!) for some kids here.
