Holy shit. I just did a quick search for references to Peter Lik on

Larry's program probably came from one of the contributing member

I'd guess it was contributed by either WNYC (because of the NY Times

Re: Shutter count

2018-02-09 Thread Eric Weir

Thanks, John. I thought when I got Larry’s response that I wasn’t going to need
this link. When I didn’t find it in Lightroom’s display of exif data I tried
the link and got what I wanted. And now I see that exif data is way more than
could be efficiently or helpfully displayed in Lightroom, that they have to be
selective, and that, I assume, since shutter count has little relevance to
image processing, it’s not included.

OT: Interviewee stole photos (for portfolio) of the interviewer

2018-02-09 Thread Igor PDML-StR

One of my mentors and former bosses once received (from a journal
editor) for refereeing a scientific article submitted for publication, -
with the results obtained by his group, but the article was written and
submitted by a person who was the sole author on the article.
That person had spent some short time as a visitor in the said group/lab
and was not even the lead person on that project: he was only briefly
involved in that project (so, he could've been an author on the article
submitted from that lab, but not the first/second author.)
So, in essence that "author" stole those results by attributing them to
himself.

Here is a similar story from the photography world:
https://fstoppers.com/humor/stolen-portfolio-interviewer-realizes-his-photos-were-stolen-interviewee-219822

Re: Scientific (in?)accuracy of another photo by Peter Lik

2018-02-09 Thread Igor PDML-StR

Apparently, they have reworked the website (lik.com), removing the two
full-moon photos that were being debunked by Fstoppers.
I suspect they regenerated web-galleries.
So, the new link is
https://lik.com/collections/skies/products/lunar-eclipse

BTW, the two photos with full-moons were in this collection just 2 days
ago:

https://lik.com/collections/skies

I am guessing if I were to publish my OP in this thread on a more visible
website, where it would be picked up by many news outlets (petapixel,
boingboing, etc.) - he'd be removing this eclipse photo too, or at least
changing the title.

So, enjoy while it is still there! [tongue in cheek]

I'm not going to say I doubt it, but Rice Whine?  I don't think he has
any more actual information than I have, or anyone else. All published
statements of the K-1 being discontinued trace back to one small
distributor that doesn't even have it's own web site, which they posted
on facebook...  The Ricoh imaging websites in the US, Canada, Britain,
and the Japanese English language web site still show the K-1 as a
current product.  Of course Britain still has the Q S1 as a current
product, but hey, it's Britain...

That's true, but for the money one could buy a say K-3, a 600mm a 1.4x
converter, a very sturdy tripod,  and have about a thousand dollars left
over, to have a nice print of about 2 feet by 3 feet made and custom
framed, after which you've got the camera and lens to start a
photography hobby or become a voyeur, whichever...

In the third paragraph they mention Rhine II which has something
important with Lik's work, it's highly manipulated, and not at all
representative of the scene as recorded, at least the Cindy Sherman work
also mentioned was made using a method that makes endless mechanical
reproduction somewhat more difficult due to the process being long out
dated.

They do appear brighter now. And it is better.

When I was looking on my laptop, - the photo still seems to me a bit dull.
I came home and looked on a big desktop screen, maximizing to the full

So, this is one of those photos where the way you look at it is critical.
(It still didn't become my favorite in this set, but I like it more now.)
I hope my suggestion was helpful.

Holy shit. I just did a quick search for references to Peter Lik on
npr.org. I didn't find any. But I did notice the top related search
suggestion was "Peter Lik fraud"!

I don't have time to find it right now, but some integer number of years
ago (3?) I heard a show on NPR about him and the investment value of his
photos.

Great job by writer David Segal. Thoroughly researched and written
with an understated style that respects the reader's intelligence.
And he gives Mr. Lik enough rope to hoist himself by his own petard,

... or rather the photo title.

While looking at the moon photos of Peter Lik, I've found one
more photo that I suspect to be fake. Well, not the photo itself, but what
it claims to be.
http://www.lik.com/thework/clouds-skies-stars/lunareclipse.html

This one is titled "Lunar eclipse". My claim is that it is not an eclipse.
Rather, it is just one of the lunar phases.
An eclipse is a shadow of the Earth. So, the dark-light boundary has a
circular shape, not a straight one as here.
The straight line is consistent with the light source (sun) being
on the right, at about 90 degrees.

See lunar eclipse photos here:
https://www.space.com/25488-total-lunar-eclipse-photos-april-2014.html
(you'd need to "click-scroll" to the right to #4, 5, 7)
or here:
https://www.space.com/11963-unusual-long-total-lunar-eclipse-full-moon.html

I wonder what PDML astro-enthusiaststs think about that?
