PESO: May Daffodil

2018-05-06 Thread Daniel J. Matyola
Because of the weather and some pressing problems that needed to be
addressed, I missed the Forsythia and Magnolia blooms this year, and most
of the daffodils. A few of the latter are still here, if a bit beyond
their prime:

I still have my K-1000 and its SMC Pentax-A 50mm f/2-22. Perhaps I

favorable reviews.

It will work as well, if not better, on your K-70 than it did on the
K-1000. At several stops faster, and being a prime, it will be a lot
better than the 18-270 at 50mm, particularly in low light. I was going
to say that you can get old m-42 lenses dirt cheap, but they're a pain
to use. You will need to set a menu item so that the camera will work
with manual lenses.

I tend to hate videos, but this came up top on my search:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gUE0aQBy2D4

In custom settings, aperture ring set it so you can use the manual lens.
Put the camera in Manual exposure, set your aperture, press the green
button and it will set the exposure.

You might be able to pick up an old copy of lightroom 5 or 6 for
pennies on the dollar. But the key thing is to shoot raw, and you can
always go back and re-edit your files later.

I've been shooting only raw since day 1, so I will keep an eye out. I
see that I can get 6.14 new for $149 which is better than I expected.

Yeah, and you can probably find a no longer used license for a few bucks.

Since each frame basically only costs you time, then there is little
downside to experiment with various filters, both physical and digital.

I have been doing a fair amount of experimentation just getting used to
the body, which I've only had for three months. I've barely begun to
experiment with the priority modes.

If I'm in low light, I use Tav mode, because shutter speed and aperture
are far more important to image quality than ISO. If I'm shooting in a
lot of light, I set ISO at 100, set the aperture and shoot in Av mode.
Your Milage May Vary.

However, I wouldn't think that with headstones, the light balance would be so

I will try that in a couple of my image editors, but I don't expect to get

What advice would you give someone at any of these stages (or any others
that come to mind) of their photography? What important things did you
learn along the way that really helped?

Probably the most important thing I ever learned about photography is the
value of light. I had been using a camera since I was in my single digits
and it wasn't until my 5th decade that I was finally came to understand the
value of quality light. Up to that point, if there was enough light, I would
take the photo and live with the result. Over the years I was able to take a
very few images that I thought were good, but I still had no idea about the
quality of light and its impact on an image. After sitting through many
slide reviews by several pro photographers, I started to see and understand
the impact that good/great light has on the image.

On that other timesuck, someone once asked what advice you’d give to
dancers that have 1-3 years of experience. People could most benefit from
different advice at different stages of their learning process. What
advice would you give to people at different stages of learning
photography?

Just the concept of “new can have many shades of meaning:
New to photography, or new to taking their photography seriously.

New to digital photography.

New to taking photos with a DSLR, rather than a camera.

The next step seems to be having learned the basics of manual controls and
processing raw files.

After that, is often studio lighting.

What about the photographer who has worked for many years and feels that
their growth as a photographer has hit a plateau?

Very nice work. I haven't yet tried shooting video with the K-70 but, as
a radio engineer (and former TV engineer as well) I need to start
thinking about getting good audio. What microphone were you using? I
wouldn't expect the mike in the K-1 to have that much high-frequency
response or to yield that relatively low a level of background noise.

Nope, that was the internal mic. I wasn't really trying for top quality
video, I just wanted to grab a cute clip. The sigma 20/1.8 despite it's
many faults, focuses nice and close (1:2 mag). I expect that the low
background noise is simply due to inverse square law, it being a short
lens, the camera was only a few inches from the baby birds.

I've been meaning to ask you about this. I was trying colored filters a
bit when photographing bands, trying to keep the red channel from
clipping. However, I wouldn't think that with headstones, the light
balance would be so far off that you couldn't get the same effect just
by tweaking the various channels in the raw files. Especially since
Lightroom allows you to use separate curves for each channel. With up
to 14 stops of dynamic range in your raw file, there's a lot of room
there for adjustment.

While at Radnor Lake I took the road trail close to the lake first off
early morning on a mission to hopefully get the privilege of seeing
either the otters or the beavers. Well I didn't get that privilege but I
did get to see one of the Barred Owls. Later in the visit and before I
was going to leave I decided to head back around again to see if I could
get lucky and see the owl again. Well to my surprise it was still at the
same spot but just a bit higher up. There is another trail that goes
into the wood above the lake so I took it to get a closer look. While
standing there for a bit the owl decided to fly up beside me on its way
to a nice meal. It was the first time I have been touched by the wings
of a Barred Owl in flight.

This is one of it perched before it was took off:

http://www.photocapturesbyjeffery.com/owls-in-nature/eaa2b4fe9

Now for those of you that don't mind seeing what it was eating on, here
is one of it perched a top of a dead tree having a mid morning meal.

http://www.photocapturesbyjeffery.com/owls-in-nature/eaa2b4f6e

I am still working on the rest of the images from the visit to Radnor
Lake.
