Nice set. I enjoyed those. Are the small eagles on the nest Ospreys?
Time for you to go after big stuff like Moose, Wolves, Bears, Mountain
Lions, etc.

Some of them are technically challenged, but still fun, like the ones

some issues at SNWR with the flange mount of my bigma coming a bit loose.

Here are some flower pictures:

I learned a few things that might come in handy on future trips:

A lot of birds (mostly cormorants) nest under the Yaquina Bay Bridge
in Newport. I had hoped to go back when the light wasn't quite so
harsh, but that was one of many things I wasn't able to get to on this
trip.

A Dodge van is very suboptinal for the car tour of the Sacramento
National Wildlife Refuge. It turns out that you aren't allowed out of
your car except in a few spots there, even in the summer when there
aren't many skittish birds around.  I'd like to go back in a
convertible so that I'm not trying to take photos while hanging out of
the driver's window.

Re: OT Computer security

2018-07-14 Thread John Sessoms
That is kind of odd, because I'm also a non-subscriber and usually locked out by
the paywall. I usually can read the first couple of sentences above an ad that
says if I want to read the rest of the article I have to subscribe.

But for some reason this one appeared to be outside the paywall.

The gist:

: The Russians used a variety of methods to acquire bitcoin, including mining,
: trading on peer-to-peer exchanges, and using prepaid cards.

and

: Russian intelligence officers moved those funds around through multiple
: wallets and exchanges, making them harder to track. A single user can have
: hundreds of different bitcoin “wallets,” without identities or with fake
: identities in an effort to hide their tracks. Some users trying to operate
: anonymously also use what are called virtual private networks, or VPNs,
: services that block the move of data from public sight.
:
: Despite efforts to remain anonymous, prosecutors said the Russians connected

: their bitcoin transactions with their hacking efforts. “On occasion, the
: conspirators facilitated bitcoin payments using the same computers that they
: used to conduct their hacking activity,” the indictment said.

I wondered if "blackmail" SPAM might be one of the "variety of methods" they
used to to acquire bitcoin?

As to the nail in the coffin of DSLR makers, there are currently only
three and a half DSLR makers.  Nikon, Canon, Pentax and Sony.  You
can count Pentax or Sony as the half, Pentax because it has such a
small market share, or Sony because it's DSLR is a hybrid which uses
it's mirror simply for AF while it's actual viewfinder is an EVF.   I

When costs come down, this will be one of the final nails in the

It also will mean that great images are not going to require larger
sensors. Cameras like the newly announced Nikon superzoom P1000 will
be all a "serious" photographer needs. And currently "unusable" high

I think it's mostly Yahoo's fault, but some of the blame spills over onto Gmail.

Re: Here's the future...

2018-07-14 Thread John Sessoms
I don't see how that can be true. Pundits were invented long before the DSLR
was. 8^)

Pundits have been touting the death of the DSLR since they were invented.
Eventually the point of ever higher resolutions is lost,  I sold bunch of images
made with the K20D and one became an add that covered the size of a bus.   14 to
18 megapixel cameras have reached sufficiency for most professional and amateur
work, which probably accounts more for the drop off in DSLR sales than anything
else.

As to the nail in the coffin of DSLR makers, there are currently only three and
a half DSLR makers.  Nikon, Canon, Pentax and Sony.  You can count Pentax or
Sony as the half, Pentax because it has such a small market share, or Sony
because it's DSLR is a hybrid which uses it's mirror simply for AF while it's
actual viewfinder is an EVF.   I expect Sony will exit that market long before
any of the other three, and it won't be higher resolution from software that
causes it.

While the race has been on to produce higher and higher resolution

post-processing images to enhance grain/noise and sharpness. It

still more economical to buy a more capable camera than to buy the
hardware that can DO this. But I'm sure that will change in time.

When costs come down, this will be one of the final nails in the
coffin of many DSLR camera makers.

It also will mean that great images are not going to require larger
sensors. Cameras like the newly announced Nikon superzoom P1000 will
be all a "serious" photographer needs. And currently "unusable" high
ISOs will suddenly become viable with AI post-processing.

Re: Just checking

2018-07-14 Thread John Sessoms
I don't think it was me. I hope it wasn't me. Yahoo is the last remaining email
account I can use to post to PDML.

I don't want to have to go through the crap I had to go through with RoadRunner
& get another new email account, especially when the Earthlink account I got has
its own problems with PDML's SPAM filter (about half the time one or more of
Earthlink's server IP addresses is on SpamEatingMonkey's shit list).

An email from a member ticked off a number of guardians, leading to excessive

A couple people, like Godfrey, just resubbed, and I added back the others after
compiling a list from the bounce notices.

I think everything is straight now, and my annoyance with yahoo has increased
toward the red line.

Apparently, it wasn't something I said.

Interesting galleries depicting the feeling of the city. I like the Red
Gate best; quite striking.
