Re: PESO - a framed photo by...?

2018-12-21 Thread Ken Waller
Its a Mangelsen photo. All the photos in his galleries are by him. He had
galleries in several cities (I've been to his galleries in Santa Barbara,
Ca., Jackson Hole ,Wy. and in the Pittsburgh Airport). His were the best
photographic galleries I've ever had the pleasure of visiting.

I just don't see the three** of them standing tripod to tripod to tripod
photographing the same trio of bears. So who plagiarized whom?

There's no plagiarizing going on here IMO. Mangelsen and Ward are well known
outdoor photogs and travel extensively to capture the images they seek.
Polar bears are a favorite subject for alot of outdoor photographers and are
photographed in numerous place. Just because similar images are taken by
several photographers doesn't mean there is any plagiarizing going on -
except maybe from the first photog to show a polar bear image like "Winter
Solace". As far as I know, Mangelsen was the first pro photog to shown a
Grizzly bear at Brooks Falls in Katmai Alaska, with a salmon jumping into
its mouth. All similar shots like his have been called the Mangelsen shot by
other pros.

Finally, that's a mighty cheap looking frame for an image that sold for so
much.

As noted on the Mangelsen web page, he offers the image in 8 different
display options from framed to canvas only.

A limited edition print should also be signed & numbered, usually on the
mat.

According to Mangelsen's web page - "All Mangelsen limited edition
photographs are assigned a unique number and hand-signed by the artist. Each
photograph includes a certificate of authenticity".

I note that Mangelsen Gallery doesn't identify a photographer, but
presumably if
another photographer had taken it, the gallery would attribute it to them,
so it

"must" have been taken by Thomas Mangelsen. ???

That raises more questions than it answers.

We now have three versions of the same image (one a mirror copy) supposedly
taken by Thomas Mangelsen, Kennan Ward and/or Tom & Pat Leeson.

I just don't see the three** of them standing tripod to tripod to tripod
photographing the same trio of bears. So who plagiarized whom?

I still wonder how the two versions of the image came to be mirrored and was
it
taken in Churchill in Manitoba or at ANWR in Alaska ... or somewhere else?
But

that's the least of the questions I have about the image.

Another thing ... if it was purchased from Mangelsen Gallery, there should
be a
label on the back, especially if it's a limited edition print (certificate
of

authenticity?). A limited edition print should also be signed & numbered,
usually on the mat.

Finally, that's a mighty cheap looking frame for an image that sold for so
much.

Any other suggestions?

On Google maps and Lightroom

2018-12-21 Thread Jostein
Following up on Ralf's lament, I tried to find out exactly what Google
has changed.

As it turns out, the queries in Lightroom code still goes to the right
place, but Google has introduced a pricing model for access to the data.
Access is only granted to paying developers. Which means that in Adobe's
subscription-based licensing model, the running cost of accessing Google
Maps can be incorporated in the monthly fee.

A traditional one-off payment for the software does not cope well with
this new pay-as-you-go sceme from Google.

I think the only chance one has to amend this, is if a capable developer
figures out how to set up a proxy service on the local computer that can
intercept the query from Lightroom to Google and then modify it to
either fulfil Google's new demands, or to pass the query on to another
map service all together like Bing, for example.

Bottom line,

Adobe is not alone in screwing its customers over. :-(

Re: I don't understand...

2018-12-21 Thread Godfrey DiGiorgi
Hi Rick,

I agree with the other responses: I doubt this had anything to do with the
Google API change. It certainly hasn't happened on my system, and I got the
notification when I clicked on the Maps module and found it no longer worked.

First: I presume you've checked the folders on the hard drive and all the files
are still there. If you have used the "Metadata > Save metadata to files"
command, all your metadata, including keywords, are saved on disk in the actual
image files for DNG, TIFF, and JPEG files, and in .xmp sidecar files for the
native raw files. (I do this regularly, as I work through a session, so that I
don't have to do it en masse. So all is not lost, if you've saved regularly as
you work.

I would definitely load a recent backup of the catalog file and test that. The
likelyhood is greatest that something simply clobbered your current .LRCAT
file. If no backup .LRCAT works, you can always start LR up, create a new
catalog, and then have it import all the existing files in ADD mode and
recreate most of the .LRCAT that way, minus virtual copies etc.

PITA for sure, but I wouldn't link it with the Google API change other than
maybe as a side effect of something that notified you.

Nice technique.

Thanks

Is it that purple to the naked eye, or is that a product of the colors
blending in the image?

I didn't really notice it, before processing the branches are pretty dim
compared to the lights and the color isn't very apparent. I think that
the purple (magenta) branches are a product of more red and blue leds
than green ones on the strings.

Re: Announcing the stop of free offering of Cloud APIs in RICOH Developer Connection

2018-12-21 Thread John
If you want to continue to use the cloud APIs you're going to have to pay for a
subscription (or maybe go to work for RICOH?).

You're probably the only one on the list who downloaded the RICOH Camera
Software Development Kit.
