I recall woodlands full of dogwoods in Monmouth County. We usually had
moderate winters near the shore. Loved Jersey, but that was then.

Thanks for looking, Paul.

The Dogwood is the State Memorial Tree of New Jersey. You guys up in
Michigan need to learn how to flatter them.

They seem to grow well here, especially on the edge of a woods. All of my
5 white dogwoods are on the edge of wooded area. That makes them grow
somewhat lopsided, but they survive well. My one red dogwood is in the
middle of the front yard; It is more symmetrical, but seems to lose
branches more frequently.

Sorry for your pain Ann, but glad to hear that otherwise you are quite

That is a great image; I remember seeing it previously, perhaps in your

2019-04-26 Thread Brian W
Hi Ann

Congrats on the photo sale - don't think I'll get a chance to see the film down
here, but you never know...

I've been on Fosamax for some time - just got to remember to take it 30mins
before eating and remain upright during that time. Yes - and not fall down.
Pity I forgot about that last one a few weeks ago :-) No permanent damage,
fortunately.

PUG submission received!

Glad you now have a good diagnosis, Ann, at least with that you will get
some relief. Hope you can get as much exercise as practical, my 101-year
old mother still can walk short distances without her walker, and credits
dancing till she was in her 90's for that level of ability!

Best,

Bottom line:  somewhere between the bone scan in 2013 and the one I had last
week, osteopenia turned into full fledged osteoporosis.. so it isnt'
arthritis that has been devling me.  My mother had it, I should not have
been surprised.   Doc put me on once-a-week alendronate sodium (the generic
of Fosamax).  Once a week is fine with me and the pills are cheap..  I put
the little blister  tab in my 7 day pill thingy -in place
of- my vitamins and BP pill .  The instructions for proper usage are both
clear and a bit scary if you mess up so I'm being very careful . IF any of
you have any tips about good stuff to do for osteoporosis pain , I'll take
it please.

I"m taking Naproxin twice a day in double the over the counter dose and it
brougnt down the pain from excruciating lumbar and elft leg hurt to achy
frequently but not consistently..  I'm moving a lot.. but need a cane to do
so.

Other than the osteo which enough people have assured me is manageable if
you are careful and eat properly (and don't fall down!)  , my check up with
the new doc was filled with godl stars.  Lungs, cardio, cholesterol (down 60
points from
2017) .  'you're goona live forever, but you ahve to take these pills". The
new doc is 80 years old himself.   I'm goin gto go to one phys theropy
session to get me on the correct for some good exercises I can do at home
and dont cost anything.. beyond my walking up and down my stairs.  i"m
sleeping a lot, but in spurts... about 5-6 hours solid at night.. then up
for two, then back to bed two or three times douring the day for naps... but
I fall asleep easily.  I've found a CURA_HEAT pad on my lower back to be
helpful to keep the pain at bay most of the time.

The photo note, which will not be news to you who are also facebook friends,
is that a photo of mine you have surely all seen before is now in a film and
I got paid a fair amount for film makers "single use"  It also appeared in
Sign Language, in my Back in the day calendar, and in Ada Calhoun's book
about the esat village 'St Marks is Dead"

So if you happen to be going to the Tribeca film festival and you happen to
have chosen to see the Abel Ferrara documentary "the Projectionist"
and you are not blinking at the wrong time , you will see this photo of
mine,  as well as my name zipping by in the credits ..

https://annsan.smugmug.com/On-the-Road-or-On-Foot/New-York-City-back-in-the-
day/i-MS6knBX/A

I was first approached by the film company last sumemr about this - they
finally ponied up in paypal last month (no, they didn't get the photo until
they paid for it) when the film got accepted for the festival.

Brian, I'll try to find a tree or two today for the PUG..

Still don't feel much like chatting.. everything is an effort  - and yet now
and then I can walk a city block or two very slowly. not to the walker stage
yet, thank goodness, and hopefully proper PT and drugs will keep me upright
more ofeten than not

Re: Impending road trip

2019-04-26 Thread Stanley Halpin
I remember visiting my Mom a month or two before she passed away. By then she
had “graduated” to the “other reality” portion of the assisted living center.
The staff asked me for help, Mom had been wandering the halls, stealing the TV
remote controls from others’ rooms, and the staff wanted me to gently retrieve
them…
Do what you can, remember the good times, and every day bless your sister for
what she is taking on.

As far as your road trip goes, we will be at home in East Central Michigan
through the summer and you are welcome to stop by. But I know that is not
exactly on a logical pathway from Texas to Oregon.

2019-04-26 Thread Bulent Celasun
Hi Ann,

I am pleased to say that -even though you don't feel perfect- all the
news are good.
You seem to be a good, disciplined patient who is easy to deal with
for a doctor.
All I can say is that as long as you don't hurt yourself you have to
be moving as much as you can.
Think of moving as a pill you have to get at least ... times a day
(fill in the space properly, once).
I believe you will get some advice during the physical therapy session.

Personally, as a child of heavily arthritic parents at a relaively
early age, I am trying to
go as much as I can without becoming a regular painkiller/NSAID user...
Your x2 Naproxin does not seem much considering your current condition.

I remember seeing your photo before and I am pleased to hear that it
continues to be appreciated.

Hoping to see you start chatting more soon : )

Impending road trip

2019-04-26 Thread Larry Colen
I am about to head on a bit of a road trip. My Mom has gotten to the
point where we need to move her into an assisted living place near my
sister (there's no way we can afford one near me). She's in great shape
physically, but lives in a different reality than the rest of us, so
can't be left unsupervised.
I'm driving today to the Central Oregon Coast. I'll rent an RV and with
help will drive pretty close to straight through to North Central Texas.
We'll stay there for a day or two, and the current plan is to drive,
perhaps not as frenetically, back to Oregon. There is a slight chance
that we'll go back to Oregon by way of Santa Cruz.

If anybody might be on the path, let me know where you are and when you
are likely to be available, stopping by to say hi might be a nice break
from the driving.

OT : annsan's diagnosis and a photo note too

2019-04-26 Thread ann sanfedele
Bottom line:  somewhere between the bone scan in 2013 and the one I had
last week, osteopenia turned into full fledged osteoporosis.. so it
isnt' arthritis that has been devling me.  My mother had it, I should
not have been surprised.   Doc put me on once-a-week alendronate sodium
(the generic of Fosamax).  Once a week is fine with me and the pills are
cheap..  I put the little blister  tab in my 7 day pill thingy -in place
of- my vitamins and BP pill .  The instructions for proper usage are
both clear and a bit scary if you mess up so I'm being very careful .
IF any of you have any tips about good stuff to do for osteoporosis pain
, I'll take it please.

I"m taking Naproxin twice a day in double the over the counter dose and
it brougnt down the pain from excruciating lumbar and elft leg hurt to
achy frequently but not consistently..  I'm moving a lot.. but need a
cane to do so.

Other than the osteo which enough people have assured me is manageable
if you are careful and eat properly (and don't fall down!)  , my check
up with the new doc was
filled with godl stars.  Lungs, cardio, cholesterol (down 60 points from
2017) .  'you're goona live forever, but you ahve to take these pills".
The new doc is 80 years old himself.   I'm goin gto go to one phys
theropy session to get me on the correct for some good exercises I can
do at home and dont cost anything.. beyond my walking up and down my
stairs.  i"m sleeping a lot, but in spurts... about 5-6 hours solid at
night.. then up for two, then back to bed two or three times douring the
day for naps... but I fall asleep easily.  I've found a CURA_HEAT pad on
my lower back to be helpful to keep the pain at bay most of the time.

The photo note, which will not be news to you who are also facebook
friends, is that a photo of mine you have surely all seen before is now
in a film and I got paid a
fair amount for film makers "single use"  It also appeared in Sign
Language, in my Back in the day calendar, and in Ada Calhoun's book
about the esat village 'St Marks is Dead"

So if you happen to be going to the Tribeca film festival and you happen
to have chosen to see the Abel Ferrara documentary "the Projectionist"
and you are not blinking at the wrong time , you will see this photo of
mine,  as well as my name zipping by in the credits ..

I was first approached by the film company last sumemr about this - they
finally ponied up in paypal last month (no, they didn't get the photo
until they paid for it) when the

film got accepted for the festival.

Brian, I'll try to find a tree or two today for the PUG..

Still don't feel much like chatting.. everything is an effort  - and yet
now and then I can walk a city block or two very slowly. not to the
walker stage yet, thank goodness, and

hopefully proper PT and drugs will keep me upright more ofeten than not

Re: PESO Grand Canyon

2019-04-26 Thread John

I think that early in the year you might be able to get rooms at the lodge.

My last visit was in January 2013 and I was able to stay in one of the cabins
there. Didn't have advance reservations, which was good because I had no idea
when I'd arrive or how long I'd stay.

Whenever I get a chance to go out west I don't really have much of a formal
itinerary. I just kind of wander wherever fancy takes me.

Agreed.  We took the train ride from Williams to the canyon just for something

within walking distance of the depot.  Next time we'll drive to get to more
viewing points.

The softness may be inherent in the recording. f/22 at 18mm puts a
painful diffraction limit on LPPM.

Pleasing scene and composition, Paul!

That's a great photo, but something looks wrong about it on my
screen, like it was reduced in resolution then expanded back up.
