Thank you, Ann!

A bit Weston, although he tended to stick with plainer backgrounds as
far as I've seen so far. I really had other folks, like Arnold Newman,
in mind while composing it.

Thank you very much, Bulent, for this appreciation and critique!

An interesting coincidence to me that you feel fragility in the figure
in nude study. She was 3 or 4 months pregnant when we shot, and
beginning to show.

I was very much aiming for a painterly look in that too. I arranged
all the background elements, and chose a high ISO and wide-open
aperture for softness.

BTW, I failed to mention that I did all post-processing in Lightroom.
Mosty minor slider tweaks.

Thunderbird updates have been fairly well behaved for me. I do

I've had compatibility issues a few times with Firefox updates, but

OT: Fun, fun, fun ... wish I had a T-bird.

2020-02-06 Thread John

Power went off while I was reading PDML (so at least I got that T-Bird).

Usually when the power goes off I know exactly which pole to go to so I can
check if the fusee is tripped. Not this time. Got up there & could see other
circuits were out as well. Half of downtown Raleigh appeared to be out.

Then all the fire trucks started converging about a block down the street, so I
wandered over that way to see what was going on.

I'm guessing when the breakers tripped there was a boom that scared someone so
bad they thought they were having a heart attack. A bunch of firemen went in one
house, came back out a few minutes later and left, so it was probably a false alarm.

That's when I saw the little bit of the pine tree hanging from the 20KV line &
the rest of the tree tipped over against the pole. I got the pole number off the
tag & called the power company.

Navigating the VRU is a pain in the A**, but eventually I managed to actually
talk to someone & gave him the information I had. "Might save you some time if
you look at this pole at this address."

Within 5 minutes there were several bucket trucks there & they had it cleared up
within 30 minutes. Took me longer to navigate the power company's VRU to tell
them where to look for it than it did for them to fix the problem once they got
there.

Anyway, I done my good deed for today, had a nice little walk & I'm back on
line.

Re: PESO x 2 - two bests

2020-02-06 Thread John

Of course I looked at the photos before reading at the rest of the post ...

Sort of expected a nude sky-diver & a nude with a large strategically located
plant of some sort (not knowing what a "Phylactere" might be).

The first one is definitely the best I've ever seen you post.

Both shot with the 645Z and the 55mm f:2.8 SDM lens. Each was lit by a
single light source.

The first was lit by an 8 inch hard silver reflector aimed though a
3/4-stop 8x8 foot scrim, above-right.
55mm/2.8 at f/8, 1/125th sec, ISO 100; handheld.

The second was lit by ambient window light, left.
55mm/2.8 at f/2.8, 1/30th sec, ISO 1600; handheld.

Model 1 is Olivia Preston, Playboy Cybergirl of the Year 2018.
Model 2 is Phylactere Rayna, a fine arts lecturer at the University of
Montreal, model, yoga instructor, dancer, photographer.

Enjoy!

There used to be a XP compatibility mode that was meant for just that
problem.

I had a laptop that originally came with "Vista" and I hated the
versions of the games that came with it (Spider, FreeCell, Solitaire
...) so I just copied the XP versions and added them to the
Windows/System folder.

They worked fine. And they still work fine on 64-bit Windows 7.

They worked so well that just now is the first time I ever looked to
see if Windows 7 included games of its own.

If Micro$oft doesn't have a clue, I bet there's other fans of that
particular game who had the same problem and somewhere out on the
interwebbys there's instructions on how to get them to work under
Windows 7.

Re: PESO x 2 - two bests

2020-02-06 Thread Bulent Celasun
Bruce,

I liked both for different reasons.

The first is an elegant, light, high key image which requires far too
much knowledge&skill to shoot this good.
The viewer has to catch the "flying" figure before she leaves the frame...
Ethereal is the word that comes to my mind.

The second, which appeals to me more, is like a painting. Can be oil
or even watercolor.
The composition is that of a perfect combination of static/rigid
elements (rectangles) and beautifully dynamic, curving figure.
I can imagine the painter looking at this one finally and saying, "done!".
The figure is certainly not flying but is not heavy either. The
dominant feeling is, to me, fragility.

Thank you very much for producing these and sharing them with us.

I considered b&w but for me colour is a very important part of the
composition.

The negative space above? I was just feeling it. :-) I have been studying
Arnold Newman and designers like Paul Rand and trying to get a better feel
for a wider PoV and including more background. This shot just suggested to
me to open it up more and leave space above. My tendency has always been to
crowd the subject in the frame; I'm pushing back against that.

Thank you, Larry.
