Have never even seen one in the flesh. One of the things that I truly
appreciate about my Pentaxes is the weather sealing, which the K-S1 lacks.

I’d say to go for something with features and capabilities that the K-01 lacks
that way you will have access to “the right camera” in a wider range of
situations. I will say that unless I am shooting in particularly challenging
light I almost never choose between the K-3 and the K-1 based on image quality.
I expect that some of the newer APS bodies are even better.

K-S1?

2020-06-27 Thread Sandy Harris
Has anyone here owned this or played with it enough to comment on it?

I'm not a remarkably dedicated or sophisticated photographer. I owned
a K-X for some time & encountered no limitations that bothered me.
Currently I have a K-01 which I mostly use with 21 Limited & 50/1.8.
That's a pretty good lightweight travel kit & I'm mostly happy with
it.

I want a second camera, mostly to improve the travel kit. Some lenses
I have -- A35-105 3.5 and Tokina 100-300 f4 -- are clumsy on the K-01
& I'd like to get something with a viewfinder for those. I'll be
visiting Japan when COVID allows & plan to prowl second hand shops
there.

K-S1 seems an obvious choice because it is light & might be cheap, but
anything from that up to K3 II might suit me. Suggestions?

Rick, the K-3 was the first body to have the AA filter simulator

Hmm.  I was considering downsizing to an E-M1 III if I decide my current

decision probably won't be affected too much by this news - whatever

Re: A little OT - Olympus selling camera business

2020-06-27 Thread P. J. Alling
Unfortunately for Olympus users it's worse than Pentax being sold to
Ricoh,  the JIP bought Sony's VAIO brand cheapened the manufacturing and
used the Sony reputation to sell an inferior product until there was no
more value to be sucked from it.  They now sell two models that are just
there to catch any unwary consumers who haven't been burned yet.

Early this spring, I cleaned out most of the birdhouses in our yard, and
reinforced with copper the entrances of some that had been "improved" by
squirrels. My efforts have been rewarded by a bluebird pair who h-ave
built a nest in a birdhouse conveniently located across from the lanai (2d
floor balcony) off our bedroom.

Re: GESO: New Neighbors

2020-06-27 Thread Daniel J. Matyola
Thanks, Rick.

The first two images are of the male. He is vivid blue in color, as
opposed to the female, which is bluish gray. Also, the female had a grub
or insect in her mouth, and was moving more erratically, She seemed to
notice me, and kept looking in my direction, while the male was more
focused on what he was doing.

Re: photographing textile arts

2020-06-27 Thread Rick Womer
Christine, the K-5 and K-3 have anti-aliasing filters in front of the sensors
to minimize moire. The K-5iis, K-3ii, and K-1/1ii bodies don’t, so they have a
switchable high-speed sensor shift for moire-prone shots.

Our first one failed after a short time (the famous "Blue LED of Death")
and it took some convincing after they insisted for days we should give
them online access to our network for diagnosing a unit that wouldn't
even switch on.

None of their software is open source so you can't intervene yourself in
case of trouble and security updates are very few and far between.

Have I already mentioned that they've become scandalously expensive?

There's also a four-drive QNAP around here that's gone gaga and won't
talk to us anymore. A year or two out of warranty. No recommendation
either.

That's why I largely prefer the Helios I've got now. Its software is
open source and stored on a standard micro SD card that you can take out
and read/write with any other computer.

PESO 2020 - 146 - GDG

2020-06-27 Thread Godfrey DiGiorgi
I'm recovering from shoulder surgery and can't sleep on my right side. Sleeping
on my back at a semi-reclined position means that I wake up after about
two-three hours and have to get up, walk around, and sit upright for a bit
before I can get back to sleep. I've been going through this cycle once or
twice per night.

Last night I left the desk lamp in my office on when I went to bed at midnight.
At 3:00 I awakened and this quiet, very low light emanated through the bedroom
door from the hallway. It was beautiful; I had to make a photograph.

 https://flic.kr/p/2jfPGb7

I set the camera up on a tripod and leveled it in the office so as not to
awaken my partner. Quietly tiptoed back into the bedroom and place it where I
thought would work, pointed it in the right direction.

Hmm. What exposure? It was too dark for anything to show up on the LCD at all.
I made an exposure on A mode and got nearly perfect exposure with the
e-shutter. And then I realized the second problem: how to focus it. Hmm. hmm.

I went back to the office and found my little pencil beam flashlight, shone it
on the doorknob, and manually focused the camera. Reframed just a little by
turning the camera and tripod just a little to the left. Made a second
exposure. Perfect.

As I step out of the bedroom carrying the camera and tripod, I hear this noise
from behind me. "Go back to sleep," I said. Noise ceased.

Onwards.

I have a DS416.

It was fairly easy to set up, and it does seem to work OK as second level
backup.

It has a lot of features that I don’t need or use. I don’t know how it
compares with other NAS systems but it’s a lot slower than local storage and
seems a bit slower than other Samba connections with computers. I ran into the
interesting problem that storage partitions max out at 16T. I have no major
complaints, though my next similar system is likely going to be just throwing a
bunch of disks inside a Linux box.

I’ve had it for a few years, and haven’t really had any serious trouble. It
doesn’t make be jump up with joy, but I have no major complaints.

I've recently assembled this one which Michael had bought a year ago and
never put to any use:

This model is no longer available but its successor, the Helios64, is
and methinks if it works as well as the Helios4 it should be great value
for money:

Easy enough. Apart from the very initial setup, you control it through
a webpage on the device itself which includes a control panel for
creating users, passwords, formatting disks etc and a file manager for
creating folders.

Yes. Specifically the DS210j bought in the summer of 2010 and the
DS214se bought at the end of 2013 (my sister's family got the 210j at
that point.)
They're both still going strong, and the DS214se still seems to get OS updates.
