I went to another spot on Empire Grade last night to try to get some moonlit

Unfortunately there was so much light in the background, the skies weren’t very
interesting, but this does show the fire damage a bit better

Not at first and often not for quite some time, which is where the misfortune
comes in. As raptors don't like vegetables but still need the nutrition that
vegetarians and omnivores obtain from them, they have to eat meat as fresh as
possible. Preferably still living.

2020-09-24 Thread Daniel J. Matyola
COVID-19 has been tough on charities.
Our Rotary Club usually hosts several spring and summer events to raise
money for scholarship, the food bank, and the local homeless shelter. Our
signature event is a Comedy Night with live comedians at the local
community college. I has always been a fun event and very successful.

Since that is impossible this year, we are doing a live virtual comedy
night to support our projects on October 9. If anyone might have interest
in a few laughs and supporting good causes, let me know, and I will send

That rather depends on what happens to the profits. In the UK the National
Lottery funds a large number of causes that I consider to be good ones, so I
buy a ticket every week by direct debit, not in the expectation of winning many
tons of money that I wouldn’t know what to do with, but because it’s another
way to support these things, and I get the occasional thrill of winning a small
amount of money - £60- being the most so far, although I do know some who has
won tens of thousands, and deserved it.

I went for a bike ride yesterday, I took the K-1, ended up going through some
other burned out areas on hwy 236 aka Big Basin Way.

I stopped to take a photos of something else in the “fallen leaf” neighborhood
and this caught my eye
https://www.flickr.com/photos/ellarsee/50362939082/in/album-72157716043467568/

About a block further up at the corner of Jamison Creek and big Basin Way I saw
this next to a burned out house. It’s funny, I realized that in the moment,
the loss of a child’s toy affected me as much as the loss of the house
https://www.flickr.com/photos/ellarsee/50362830461/in/album-72157716043467568/

This intersection was in the news back in June. Someone saw a white parked
here with guns in it. To make a long story short it belonged to a right wing
extremist (boogaloo) who shortly thereafter murdered a deputy, nearly killing
his partner, and who it was later discovered had killed a cop two weeks before
in Oakland. It’s been an overly interesting summer for our sleepy little
community.
https://www.flickr.com/photos/ellarsee/50362826386/in/album-72157716043467568/

A few weeks ago, someone posted a photo of a James Dean mural. Years, and a
couple owners back, the owners of the Brookdale lodge had a similar mural
painted on a wall facing hwy 9. Someone else bought the place, worked on
cleaning it up, and painted over the mural. There was an incredible uproar
from all of the locals, so they hired someone else to paint a new one, which
sucked. Another renovation cycle later, they were very close to reopening, and
Covid hit. They do, now, have a much better mural than the last:
https://www.flickr.com/photos/ellarsee/50362836591/in/album-72157716043467568/

If you go down towards Salinas, you will see a lot of John Cerney’s work:
https://www.johncerneymurals.com/

I just liked the title of this article I found about him
https://carmelmagazine.com/archive/outstanding-in-his-field

Anybody who has driven South to Monterey on the coast has seen the whimisical
painting of someone loading a giant artichoke into a Nash metropolitan, itself
even larger than a real one which is at the bottom of this page
https://www.roadarch.com/signs/cerney.html

Full set from yesterday. Again, it’s a bit large as it’s a lot of
documentation:
https://www.flickr.com/photos/ellarsee/albums/72157716043467568

I have come to the conclusion that of the natural disasters I’ve experienced so
far, wildfires are my least favorite.

Re: Mother goose in the ashes, another afterburn

2020-09-24 Thread Stanley Halpin
Like Bob said, the Goose shot is excellent.

I went through the whole set. What I noticed about my own reactions to the
images is that the shots of burnt-out houses, nothing left but foundations and
a lone chimney, were not that strong. If I had seen those houses before, if I
had driven by them and noticed them before, then I would have something to
reference the loss. The burnt out pickup truck(s), the bicycle frames, those I
can relate to and feel for because I can “see” what they would have been before
the fire. In this same context, I thought the first two BMW shots were really
compelling. The left side - right side contrast of what was and what it became
was just very stark.

After our flood this year our Servpro clean-up crew were from Pennsylvania and
North Carolina. But after our 2017 flood the Servpro crew who came out were
based in your area in California. Your shots of the Servpro trucks there made
me wonder how many of the workers were out-of-state and how many were locals. I
know I would not last long in a job that involved cleaning up after floods,
fire, hurricanes, earthquakes, etc. But I would think the emotional impact of
constantly dealing with disaster could be even worse when working in one’s own
neighborhood/region.

Anyway, nice set. Sorry you have to be there to see all of that.
