I can't see the photo either, Ann.

The Nikon B700 Superzoom has an equivalent focal length of 24-1440mm, in 35mm
FF terms. A very long lens indeed! (The Sigma 600mm lens that made my
conjunction image on the Panasonic GX9 Micro-FourThirds camera is equivalent to
a 1200mm lens in 35mm FF terms.)

Do a search with Google for "Jupiter-Saturn conjunction photos 2020" and you'll
find plenty of really nice photos!

Carbon.

In the testing they did during the course of development, the carbon design
proved to be both more stable and faster damping with small induced vibrations.
The difference in weight is about 3/4 lb. For the $250, both the improved
stability and the weight savings seemed worth it.

2020-12-22 Thread Godfrey DiGiorgi
The Hasselblad V-system Zeiss lenses are shockingly accurate on focus
calibration and provide amazing quality. Even the more modest performers are
extremely good performers, which is one of the reasons why I've been a little
baffled when I hear some folks complaining that "...they're just not sharp
enough for the digital backs..." This particular Sonnar 150mm f/4 is freekin'
ancient (made in 1967, pre T* coatings) and has a crack in the focusing mount …
It's too expensive to have it repaired since I can buy a replacement without
any issues for half the cost of repair. But I think photos like this one show
that it is more than just "good enough" to be useful on the digital back. :)

The PD Travel Tripod is an excellent quality, ultra-light and ultra-compact
piece of kit given its carrying capacity, height, and versatility. It holds the
Hassy with even the 150 lens and digital back quite stably enough to be
extremely useful, and it's small enough to toss into my bicycle backpack and
not be a burden. The price … while it's not inexpensive, it's about 2/3 of what
my Arca-Swiss Monoball P0 Hybrid *ball head* costs, never mind a suitable set
of legs to hold that head off the ground. It's one of those things where you
actually get what you pay for and, if you use it enough, you're ahead of the
game. :)

PESO 2020 - quarter Moon - GDG

2020-12-22 Thread Godfrey DiGiorgi
I decided that yesterday was a "walk and shoot" day with the Hasselblad 500CM.
So I fitted the ancient Sonnar 150mm f/4 and the CFVII 50c digital back,
stuffed my PD Travel Tripod into a shoulder bag and put a neck strap on the
camera, and headed out for a hour and a half walk around the neighborhood.

Coming up on the end of the walk, I stopped at the cafe to grab a cup of coffee
to have with my lunch and walked over to the stone bench near the fountain by
the cafe. The sky was a clear pale blue, a bit of mist up there, but just
barely visible was the quarter Moon. "Hmm, I wonder how big that will image
onto the medium format digital sensor with this 150mm lens...?"

So I stuck the camera onto the tripod, set the lens to infinity and f/5.6 (or
f/8...?) and the shutter to about 1/125 (1/250 ..?) and snapped a photo using
my cable release. Using some post-processing to make the Moon as visible as
possible smashed the pale blue to nearly black …

 Quarter Moon - Santa Clara 2020 :: https://flic.kr/p/2kjkLiW

It's a pretty small image of the Moon. But as I looked at it on my computer
display last evening, I thought I saw enough structure on the face of the Moon
and decided to crop down to it for a better look…

 Quarter Moon - Santa Clara 2020 (cropped) :: https://flic.kr/p/2kjq5vD

Made with Hasselblad 500CM + 1967 Sonnar 150mm f/4 onto the CFVII 50c digital
back.
Exposure ISO 400 @ f/5.6 @ 1/125 (estimated).

LOL! I don't think I'm going to believe anyone who tells me that "those old
Hasselblad lenses don't have enough resolution for the digital backs!" any
more. :D

enjoy!

I find it interesting that the square crop makes this a very
compelling image for me. It would make a great album cover (jazz or
ambient, I figure).

PESO 2020 - conjunction - GDG

2020-12-22 Thread Godfrey DiGiorgi
The conjunction of planets Jupiter and Saturn was clearly visible in the sky at
6:51pm when I got up to the roof of my building. I made this first photo at
6:55 ... and just after I did so, the air filled with mist and cloud and the
view was lost.

  Jupiter-Saturn Conjunction :: https://flic.kr/p/2kjdtL6

As I looked at the photo on my computer display, I realized there was more in
it than just the two planets. I cropped away about 90% of the frame and now I
could clearly see three of the Galilean Satellites of Jupiter.

  Jupiter-Saturn Conjunction (cropped) :: https://flic.kr/p/2kjhfQS

Panasonic GX9 + Sigma 600mm Mirror Telephoto
ISO 25,800 @ f/8 @ 1/8 sec

Seen from Santa Clara on Dec 21, 2020.
Enjoy!
