Re: February PUG is up

2021-02-04 Thread Daniel J. Matyola
Thanks, again, Brian, for all your hard work on behalf of the group.
Another great job!

It is an interesting and diverse gallery, with a lot of top images. My
personal favorites are:

1. Denali, by Stan Halpin is a clear and well-composed portrayal of one of
my favorite mountains, and one of those most difficult to photograph
(probably second only to Fujisan).
2. Insignificant Landscape, by Darren Addy is a startling image with
incredible light and dramatic shadow. Really belongs on the wall.

I was also moved by the Lonely Icelandic Pony by Henk Terhell. What a
story that image tells. Ann's image of Portage Glacier brings back
wonderful memories of that magical venue; I understand that it is now only
a shadow of its former glory due to the ravages of climate change.

Congratulations to all who participated in this truly excellent gallery!

February PUG is up

2021-02-04 Thread Brian W
G'day all

A reasonably large gallery this month - and some great black & white landscapes.
Well done all.

Just a short note on how to access the the high res versions of the images...

1. Click a thumbnail image on the index page.

2. This will open a low res version of the image (sized to fit on most monitors
without the need to scroll the image)

3. Click on the low res image and the full res version will open.

Enjoy the new gallery here:

http://pug.komkon.org/

(you may need to refresh your browser if you see the previous gallery there).

Note: The automated submission process usually works well but it's not
infallible. So, if you made a submission and you don't see it in the gallery,
let me know.

Re: filter wallets

2021-02-04 Thread Bill
Every filter wallet I've used has gassed out on my filters, leaving a film
that is somewhat hard to remove. I just use the cases they come in now.

Here's a thought. If you sew, or know someone who does, why not make a
filter case out of fabric?

I suspect stack caps are still available. I used them when I was shooting
35mm film. They are a bit nerdy, but they work well as long as your filters
don't freeze together.

I'm having real problems with filters binding. I'm using goofy expensive
brass ringed filters, but the rings are so thin they are really bendy and I
find really difficult to remove sometimes.
Consequently, I'm a bit afraid to try stack caps on the soup plates that
modern lenses require.

I have a couple of these from Lowepro which I bought about a million years ago.
I still have some polarisers which I might use some day, and that’s where I
keep them. They’re very good - I can’t imagine anything much better for what
they do.

I also have yellow and green filters for Leica lenses in another of these
pouches. They’re for just in case electricity stops working and I have to go
back to shooting Tri-X with an M3.

I use very few filters with digital. Primarily polarizers, very rarely a

manufacturer.

IIRC those cameras can do automatic multi-exposure stitching to create

still called that when there's no drive motor for actual film movement is a
good question ...)

Thanks - I hadn’t considered it. I’ve been toying with the idea for some time
of buying a tripod fluid head, for long lens bird photography, but I guess a
side benefit would be that panoramas would be easier.

Old school techniques would suggest that you turn 'around the camera' or
more exactly around the nodal point of the lens. That's the way analog
panoramic cameras work.

Thanks, ann, and everyone else who looked.

As Mike said, there is no obligation here to wear a mask outdoors - I certainly
don’t unless I’m buying something from a stall. Most infections seem to take
place indoors without adequate ventilation. With the pubs and restaurants etc
closed I think the probability may be highest in supermarkets. Worthing has a
fairly high population of elderly people and everyone seems to be very careful
about COVID; the infection rate is relatively low here and going down very
quickly at the moment.

https://www.icloud.com/sharedalbum/#B0IGWZuqDGsjeIu

I agree with you about the distortion. That comes from turning from my hips as
the camera takes a sequence of photos for stitching together. It occurred to me
after reading your comments that the distortion could possibly be eliminated by
moving sideways, rather like a travelling shot on rails as used in movies, so I
could try that. Whether I could move quickly enough to get the right amount of
coverage, and steadily enough to get a good match, is to be discovered.
