2021-08-20 Thread Alan C

Thanks, Rick

There is a lot of this sort of thing in the big cities, especially
around Johannesburg, but nice for our sleepy little dorp. Most of the
planes are sponsored for advertising purposes at air shows. Variations
of the Extra 300's are the most popular & capable. There are also a lot
of Pitts Specials some of them about 50 years old now. Many other
vintage planes too. There is to be a display by the top pilots tomorrow
(Sat) pm so I'll have another go then.

PESO 2021 - 133-140 - GDG

2021-08-20 Thread Godfrey DiGiorgi
I continue to experiment with the Aporia 24mm... But this time I fitted it to
the Hasselblad 907x using a Leica M to Hasselblad X mount adapter. I figured
that since it was designed to cover 24x36 format film, it might work okay on
33x44mm digital sensor if I cropped to square.

The camera looks slightly ludicrous with a lens that's smaller than and 1/3 the
weight of the lens mount adapter…

https://flic.kr/p/2mhQVWa

… but if it works okay, who cares? :)

Some test photos from my daily walks:

https://flic.kr/p/2mi8vo6 :: Methodist Church Under Repair - Santa Clara 2021
https://flic.kr/p/2migbHw :: Art and Missiles - Santa Clara 2021
https://flic.kr/p/2micqgU :: Direction - Santa Clara 2021

https://flic.kr/p/2midHaU :: Siding, Sun, and Shadows - Santa Clara 2021
https://flic.kr/p/2mi8vqL :: Light Beam on Surface Texture - Santa Clara 2021

The issues using this lens on the camera are several.

- Electronic shutter only, with a scan time of 300milliseconds. So moving
subjects are nearly impossible.

- A 24mm lens, even with full viewfinder magnification for focus assist, proves
hard to judge the best focus point. Normally I'd just set the lens by scale,
but the focusing scale on the Aporia is way off the mark and needs to be fully
re-calibrated to get the best out of it.

- Luckily, a 24mm lens at f/5.6 has so much DoF on this format, you can focus
pretty approximately and still get usable sharpness. I made a mark for 7 foot
distance… that covers 3.5' to infinity.

- The camera naturally wants to ride nose up on a strap as I walk, which
invites dropping dirt and garbage onto the lens, so I carried it in a bag.

It's fun stuff, however, and is sure amusing. You can see in the first two
shots (which are directly out of the camera, resized only) there is a bit of
color shifting across the capture field but it's fairly subtle.

Enjoy!

On the first one, the echo of the shadows of the scaffolding and the curve of
the building is interesting, but gets lost. Some cropping and higher contrast
might help.

Methinks the last one could use more contrast, and some taming of the
highlights on the foliage.

Re: ADVICE PLEASE

2021-08-20 Thread John
I've never been an active plane spotter, but I've been goofy over airplanes for
as long as I can remember. There was a time when I knew ALL of the military
airplanes & who flew them. (nation, service branch, ...)

When I was a child (around 1955 or so) the Air Force still put on flying
demonstrations on Memorial Day.

They would fly formations of aircraft around the state and there must have been
some kind of press release giving a schedule of when they would be passing over
certain points because I remember knowing what time & which direction to look
for them.

Around here it was mostly C-47s & C-119 Flying Boxcars (because Ft Bragg & the
82nd). I don't think the Air Force started using C-130s until after the DoD
phased out those aerial power demonstrations.

And what looked like B-29 bombers, which I now think might have been KB-50
tanker aircraft and KC-97 Stratotankers along with C-97 Stratofreighters (all
developed from the B-29 air frame).

I also remember formations of propeller driven fighters, probably P-51s, but
might have included A-1 Skyraiders. I believe the Air Force Reserve still had a
few P-51s in the mid-50s.

The other thing I remember is B-52 bombers coming in low over US 70 east of
Goldsboro, NC (landing at Seymour Johnson AFB).

They'd have been about a mile from their touchdown point on the runway and they
are *HUGE* when you see them up close only a couple hundred feet off the ground.

The impression from seeing them in the air like that is even more dramatic than
when you see them on the ground when they're on static display at an AFB open house.

And just a bit farther down the road you passed by Cherry Point and there were
often various USMC or Navy aircraft passing low over the highway on their way to
the runway (4,000 ft from the threshold on 5R).

The other one that is amazing to see in the air from that vantage point (close
up under the flight path when they're landing) is the C5 Galaxy, but they
weren't around when I was a child; first introduced in 1970.

No personal experience, but they've updated the coatings and I believe
they have rounded the aperture blades somewhat.

I expect it's purple fringing when wide open is about the same as the
original model, I don't think that is something that can be cured with a
coatings update.

The 77 is still a much loved lens and gives very good image quality most
of the time, though it has now been much superseded by the D FA* 85/1.4
in several categories, image quality, size and price are the ones that
come to mind.

Expect the new version to be similar in most regards, and perhaps
somewhat better in a few metrics, those being the ones where rounded
aperture blades are better than straight ones.

I'm not sure if this is true, but my understanding is that the coating
update had as much to do with economics as anything else. By updating
the lens to HD coatings, they are standardizing on a more modern coating
strategy for all their lenses, not because the HD coatings are night and
day better than the older SMC process, which is already excellent.

The SMC 77 that I have handles flare better than just about any lens I
have used. It is quite difficult to ruin a shot with flare with the 77,
so if the HD coatings are in improvement, it's going to be incremental,
and making what is very good indeed a tiny bit better.

I expect if you dig around on Pentax Forums a bit, you will probably
find a few direct comparisons between the two. There are a number of
people there who spend quite a bit of effort making the type of
comparisons you will find helpful.

I'm keeping my 77 for when I get too frail to carry the 85/1.4. I hope
the mechanics of it haven't frozen by then, as my intent is to not
become that frail for half a dozen decades.

Great article & photos, Paul. I could only ever dream about cars like
that. What about your car?

Finally getting a 77

2021-08-20 Thread Gonz
Going on a trip up to Maine in a couple of weeks. Been lusting over
the 77 for years, maybe decades. I've had the 31 for a few years and
love it. Figured I could take both as a lightish weight kit on my
trip. Apparently they're making a new 77 now, "HD". Anyone have any
experience with these newer models? Any comparisons with the older
limiteds?

Saw it today in the carbon-based NYTimes. Some of the photos didn’t get in, so

GESO: SA AEROBATIC CHAMPS, 2021

2021-08-20 Thread Alan C
Tried my hand at something different. Thanks for all the advice. K5 & HD
55-300. Ended up MF TAV 1/1000sec f8 but not easy. Only about 5%
keepers. High aerial shots are heavy crops. Very challenging - obviously
needs lots of practice.

The Aerobatic Competition started yesterday at 14:00 & will end on Sat.
Only 28 planes pitched which is rather disappointing but I suppose it's
a long flight for them to get here. The organisation is very spectator
unfriendly. There is no printed programme so we don't know anything
about the planes or pilots or what is happening, when. No access to the
airfield, hangars or planes for spectators who have to watch from
outside or a cleared area about 500m N of the terminal buildings. No
entry fee, mind you, & some freelancers with food/non-alcoholic
refreshments. Portable toilets provided.

Heavy cloud today & forecast again for tomorrow with rain - activity for
the day only beginning late, this afternoon - wonder if they will
finish? The Extra 300S is the most popular with a couple of Pitts
specials. No idea what the others are except for a single Russian YAK 52.
