Re: PESO - Early Morning Abstract

2021-12-02 Thread Rick Womer
Ann, I’m glad you like the pic!

There is a family of “Pentax forum” websites, but I don’t think they have
anything to do with Compuserve’s forums of yore.

About 1983 or ‘84 I got my first computer at work, but there were no network
connections. A couple of years later it was connected to the network, and our
national clinical research organization (the Children’s Cancer Study Group, or
CCSG) required that its members get a Compuserve account for email (still a
very new thing).

Poking around on Compuserve, i was pleased to find a Pentax group (I was
happily shooting with my Super Program). Others will have to fill in the
transition to a Pentax-sponsored group, and then Doug’s leadership.

Apparently it isn't a difficult repair. The problem is finding a solenoid
that won't fail. Apparently Pentax changed suppliers and the new units are
failure prone. My understanding is the new ones are one colour, I recall
white, and the old ones are green, though I might have it backwards.
If I'm not mistaken, even one from as far back as a Super Program will fit.

Rick,

I’m not so much shooting for one particular need, I just don’t have any good
recent photos. I did want to get some photos of my full beard before I trimmed

long hair. I haven’t had long hair since 2004. I don’t know how much longer
I’ll keep it.

But mostly, I realized I don’t have any decent photos from the past several
years so I wanted to get some current ones for whatever

I certainly don’t lead with the body shots. With the surplus of resolution
available when I can’t see what is actually in the frame, I was shooting extra
loose knowing that I can crop in on just the face and still have plenty of
pixels to play with.

John,

Let’s just say that no matter what one might think of my photography these
photos are evidence of why I spend the vast majority of my time behind the
camera rather than in front of it.

Re: Live view, arrggh

2021-12-02 Thread Doug Brewer
Friendly critique: You have the camera set too low. It's pointing at
your chest, so the viewer gets a good look up your nose and an
uncomfortable feeling that you're leaning back. I think I understand
you're trying to avoid the double chin look, but that can be done other
ways.

There could be a little too much paying attention to what the camera is
doing and too little concentration on being the subject. Set up the
frame, then get in it and go. Let the camera do its thing.

1. Put something in there to focus on, like the previously mentioned
mop. Focus on it, then turn off the AF and remove the object. Might want
to mark the floor.

2. Set the timer.
3. Hit your mark.
4. Check result.
5. Rinse and repeat.

One frame at a time. Shoot loose with enough DOF to get in focus if you
miss your spot a little. Crop to satisfaction.

None of this requires live view.

On 12/2/21 1:35 AM, Larry Colen wrote:

I think I learned some things from my last shoot and am giving it another try

Oddly, things seem to be mostly working just fine with live view. I can see
enough on the display to frame myself where I want to be, I can see the preview
screen and get an idea how things turned out, and using my wired remote trigger
I can take photos when I want.

On Dec 1, 2021, at 9:16 AM, Doug Brewer wrote:

Isn't there a timer on the camera?

Yeah, that’s how I took the last set:
https://www.flickr.com/photos/ellarsee/albums/72157720168248521

Warning for the faint of heart, there are a few shirtless ones at the end.

Ann also explained how I could do the self portraits using a film era camera.
I even have some self portraits I took years ago by sticking a mop in a bucket,
manually focusing on that, and trying to stand in the same place using the self
timer.

The point of my complaint was that there are a lot of advantages to being able
to see what is in the frame. I don’t know about you folks, but when I’m taking
photos I don’t aim the camera and shut my eyes before pressing the shutter. At
least not often.

However, like I said things were working great tonight, until I realized that
if I put the camera in single frame mode, I wouldn’t get a bunch of second
frames with uncharged strobes, and the K-1 turned the flash off. Long story
short, in live view, if you put it in “motordrive” mode, whatever they call it,
they turn off the electronic shutter. Also, something that isn’t well
documented, if the camera is in electronic shutter mode, it won’t fire a flash.
I had to disable electronic shutter to use live view with a flash.

Whoever wrote the K-1 manuals should be soundly beat about the head and
shoulders with a tiltall tripod. It should simply say what the effects of
being in different modes are. sigh. They spent too much time trying to make
the manuals so they don’t scare off morons who would be better off just using
their phone cameras and don’t tell the people who know photography what they
need. But that is a rant for another day.

For folks who are curious, I’ll put proofs from tonight here:
https://www.flickr.com/photos/ellarsee/albums/72157720194746983

I am incapable of critiquing photos of myself, so I post proofs and beg friends
to tell me which ones suck the least.

I have to agree with Ann. These shots all say "Look at me! I'm posing!".
In particular, the upward tilt of the head seems to be looking over the

Alan - look at his eyes.. in many he has a twinkle.  You don't have to
show teeth to smile.

Larry - Hey, I thought you were doing -headshots- for business reasons..
didn't know you were going on Match.com. ;-)

Posed full body or mostly full body shots that are posed are really a
turn off, IMHO..  a pro head shot and snap shots in good natural light

will get you farther.

Oddly, things seem to be mostly working just fine with live view. I
can see enough on the display to frame myself where I want to be, I
can see the preview screen and get an idea how things turned out, and
using my wired remote trigger I can take photos when I want.

Isn't there a timer on the camera?

Yeah, that’s how I took the last set:
https://www.flickr.com/photos/ellarsee/albums/72157720168248521

Warning for the faint of heart, there are a few shirtless ones at the
end.

Ann also explained how I could do the self portraits using a film era
camera.  I even have some self portraits I took years ago by sticking
a mop in a bucket, manually focusing on that, and trying to stand in
the same place using the self timer.

The point of my complaint was that there are a lot of advantages to
being able to see what is in the frame.  I don’t know about you
folks, but when I’m taking photos I don’t aim the camera and shut my
eyes before pressing the shutter.  At least not often.

However, like I said things were working great tonight, until I
realized that if I put the camera in single frame mode, I wouldn’t
get a bunch of second frames with uncharged strobes, and the K-1
turned the flash off.  Long story short, in live view, if you put it
in “motordrive” mode, whatever they call it, they turn off the
electronic shutter.  Also, something that isn’t well documented, if
the camera is in electronic shutter mode, it won’t fire a flash.   I
had to disable electronic shutter to use live view with a flash.

Whoever wrote the K-1 manuals should be soundly beat about the head
and shoulders with a tiltall tripod.  It should simply say what the
effects of being in different modes are.  sigh.  They spent too much
time trying to make the manuals so they don’t scare off morons who
would be better off just using their phone cameras and don’t tell the
people who know photography what they need.  But that is a rant for
another day.

For folks who are curious, I’ll put proofs from tonight here:
https://www.flickr.com/photos/ellarsee/albums/72157720194746983

I am incapable of critiquing photos of myself, so I post proofs and
beg friends to tell me which ones suck the least.

I had the clever idea that I can plug an external monitor into the
HDMI and use that for framing etc.
It *almost* works.  Unfortunately, if I set the camera’s exposure
to use strobes the live view is so dark it won’t auto focus.  Even
when I put it on manual focus, it often refuses to fire the shutter.

Also the screen is so dark, it’s damn near useless for live view.
And there is no way at all to change things so that you can use
live view with a flash.

Sigh.

Unfortunately, when I try to force a smile it looks like I am fighting a near
terminal case of gas.

Also, almost a year ago I lost a tooth that was damaged when I was in high
school, and I’m still a month or two out from finishing with the implant.
