Thanks Ann and others for comments.
Yes, you can eat velvet shank mushrooms. A cultivated (white) variety is
enoki-take well known in Asian food and claimed to have health benefits.
But you have to be careful not picking a similar looking mushroom, the
deadly galerina (funeral bell)!

I have several photos on the wall that have darkened over the years, and lost
their charm. As I recall I used Slideprinter/Denver Digital imaging for them.

I have more photos Id like to get printed, and a few old ones
re-printed. What printing services have people been happy with?

That's basically what I was thinking. The lighting is just perfect. My
daughter liked it too (she's interested in mushrooms).

We have a tree in our back yard which has a large bracket fungus growing out
near its base. We'll be having it removed fairly soon.

For many years I’d get paper prints in 12x18 at Costco. Unfortunately they no
longer have in-store printing. For display I use Bay photo, which for me has
the benefit of being local. I am a big fan of metal prints for display as they
look great even without a frame, and if they get something on them they can be
cleaned. They also can have the wonderful deep blacks that would make
Cibachrome prints look so nice.

I took no offense, besides in this group “old and now somewhat obscure”
probably comes off as a glowing recommendation.

And has suffered from the same prevalence of spam that took down usenet.
Coincidentally, the one other email list that I frequent is a group of friends

Hi Rick,

The only printing I've had done for me has been canvas wrap prints, which I've
had printed by Artistic Photo Canvas in Florida. They're still around, and I
imagine still do a lovely job. I'd recommend them if you want canvas wraps.

Everything else I've done in prints are printed with my home system … I used to
use an Epson R2400, switched to an Epson P600 some years ago, likely around
2017. The P600 makes superb prints up to 13x19 inch cut sheet sized.

I'm sure others have had prints done by a service. I occasionally take a
printing job for some work. If you're interested in that, we can talk off line.

I was on Usenet starting in 1984 when I was working at JPL/NASA. The modern
hypertext-based internet and "world wide web" dates from around 1993 when the
first web browsers started to appear. That's about when I stopped looking at
Usenet and other archaic-isms from the 1980s. Email lists became popular a
little earlier than the web browsers, and many of the groups I still
participate in are still on email services that were first defined in 1990 and
1991.

Are you talking about printing from chromes , negatives or digital
files?   What size?

If you have jpg files  and 8 1/2" x 11 print would work  ,  I'll make
some for you at cost. (paper and shipping)  I have some good Ultra
premiun glossy Epson paper

and a good Epson r220.. I'm like the prints I get with this combo a lot.

When I was at lunch the news was showing a video of a Pine tree falling in the
Santa Cruz mountains… google google
It’s posted several places online:
https://kmph.com/news/local/mudslide-causes-large-pine-tree-to-hit-the-ground-in-santa-cruz

I’m pretty certain that’s at the road closure about half a mile up the road
from my house, probably taken from the intersection of Hwy 9 and Glen Arbor.

My apologies, the google monster says 0.8 miles.

I did spend some time after lunch on my drive home taking some photos,
particularly down by the covered bridge in one of the harder hit neighborhoods.

I had the Tokina for a while. It was plenty sharp enough even wide open,

Re: PDML - PDFG ?

Usenet is a relatively ancient system for posting information, messages and the
like. It was originally phone based relying on dial up modems. It’s now
internet based. It’s very basic and straightforward. Although you need an
access app, you don’t have to subscribe to a service like Facebook. It’s rather
inelegant but old timers embrace it as a computer geek badge of honor.

Thanks Collin,

By chance I actually came across a ‘parts or spares and repair’ example of a

autofocus (I only need manual focus and aperture). I know something of these
lenses as I have the 17-35/2.8 and have already had that apart to adapt it for
video use. So for 130GBP I have a lens that goes for betwen 3 tp 6 times that
depending on condition. It’s a stellar perfomer apparently which is what I need
for HD video.

Tweakers and drivers at the ready!

Re: Fun in the rain

2023-01-10 Thread Godfrey DiGiorgi
The Guadalupe River Bypass in downtown San Jose was built about a couple/three
dozen years ago to prevent the occasional heavy rain years' swelling of the
Guadalupe River and subsequent flooding of the surrounding neighborhoods. On a
normal, dry, summer day the river is essentially a 6" deep, 8 foot wide trickle
flowing through the channel 15 feet below and to the side of the bottom of the
big concrete bypass structures, and the bottom of the Coleman Avenue Overpass
that goes over the river is 30-40 feet above the level of the water. Saturday,
the water line was 2 feet above the bottom of the bypass structure.

I haven't been down there to observe since, but on a similar rainy week a
number of years ago, I saw the water level reach 2 feet from the top of the
bypass structure and close to the bottom of the overpass…

It's been raining a lot. Deepest darkest Santa Clara where I live (about four
miles from that part of the Guadalupe River) is at an elevation of 90 feet so
little flooding here so far, although the flood channels along the San Tomas
and Cabrillo streams/river have more than double the usual depth of water in
them. Larry lives in the Santa Cruz mountains about 25 miles to the south and
west of me, on the western side of the slopes, which get a lot more rainfall
than I do here in the south end of Santa Clara Valley.

If a few of the photos you can see my home made depth gauge. The
photos at the end of the set show the river after it had dropped to
16 feet, a little deeper than it got on the 31st.  At its deepest
this morning I think it was a bit over 18' deep.
Granted, that's 18' over the portion of the river bed that is usually
not under water, the normal channel is maybe 1/3-1/2  as wide as it
is when it goes cliff to cliff.

Like a fool, I figured that today was going to be nice and dry, and
while they need to do some work on 17 on the side heading home,
they'll be long done with that before I need to go home. It turns out
they finished a bit before 10PM, I had to take some back roads, with
mud from slides, missing pavement, and some trees here and there, but
I got home even it took me an hour and 15 minutes rather than 45.

We're supposed to get another nice big storm tonight, and I'm
planning on working from home tomorrow.

Larry -

Glad to see/hear you're OK so far.  Is your house set back from the
river a little more than some of those on the other side?  Felton was
specifically mentioned in articles on CA flooding in our local Milwaukee
paper today.  Our son and his family live about 15 miles from SLO and
have been out of power for over 24 hours.

Our European chestnut trees are being killed by an invasive species of
moths (cameraria ohridella). It's a sad view to see those majestic trees
shed their leaves in mid-summer.

Re: PESO: mushrooms on chestnut tree

2023-01-10 Thread Rick Womer
Toine, those are beautiful shots!

Chestnuts were the dominant tree species here in Pennsylvania (and many other
areas in the US) until a fungal blight arrived in 1904. Our house, built in
1886, has chestnut woodwork throughout. It is so resistant to rot that even our
window frames are in fairly good shape.

Some stands of blight-resistant chestnut have been planted experimentally, but
of course it will be years before their fate is clear.

The European chestnut (fortunately for all of you across the pond) has been
rescued by a virus that is a blight on the fungus. There’s some poetic justice
there…
