Great gallery. You sure have some spectacular (gaudy) birds over there.
Love the gazelles (mind you, more goat then gazelle like) & the fox too.

So effectively you have moved from East to West?

BTW, I am still tying to source a copy of "Voetspore, India" for you but
haven't even found a S/H one yet.

PESO: Traveller's Palm

2023-02-13 Thread Daniel J. Matyola
This is an interesting tree, growing against a wall of a building across
from the one in which our condo unit is located.

It is a Ravenala, commonly known as the traveller's tree, traveller's palm
or East-West palm, from Madagascar. It is not a true palm, but a member of
the family Strelitziaceae. It has been given the name "traveller's palm"
because the sheaths of the stems hold rainwater, which supposedly could be
used as an emergency drinking supply for needy travellers. Another
plausible reason for its name is that the fan tends to grow on an east–west
line, providing a crude compass.

after some fundamental life changes due to which i had to change towns and
i was not even able to lurk for the last six months or so, i am settled in
my 'native' place in kerala and 'back' so to speak. i have been active
photographically speaking, but mostly with the nikon birding set-up and
i've a few treks and motorcycle rides in the himalayas coming up in the
months ahead on which i will hopefully be taking the k5iis.

glad to be back and though it's no use trying to catch up on the mail, i'll
give it a try...

regards, subash

Re: #**&%#& Wires

2023-02-13 Thread John Sessoms
There's a Photoshop trick that can eliminate those wires. Take two
photos of the scene from a few feet apart. Stack them in Photoshop.
Choose "Median" & "automatically align".

It should make an image with the houses aligned and the power lines
disappear.

It works better if you're shooting from a tripod, but I have managed to
make it work from handheld.

Our part of Philadelphia has beautiful Victorian architecture.

It’s very hard to photograph it because our part of Philadelphia also has lots

what else. In some other parts of the city the wires are buried.

Sigh.

It was a beautiful day, and this is a very attractive building. My attempts to
try to clone out the wires were futile.

Commiserations and suggestions both welcome.
