Re: Understanding ProPhoto RGB - or not
I am afraid you will never get any solid answer as there are supporters for all 3 colour spaces. Each group has their reasons why one was better. Most books will tell you to use AdobeRGB, some suggest wider space must be better, and some went back to plain old sRGB after some backyard experiment. I personally use sRGB for the fact that it works best with local labs and for the web. I always forgot the conversion between spaces and eventually gave up. Just too much hassle. Yes, but don't get too carried away with the "generic" rating. A generic batt could be labeled 2000mAh yet being outperformed by brand name batt. After using the K15/3.5, shielding the lens from flare with my left palm has become 2nd nature to me. I don't use the hood with this zoom as I think the front barrel wobbles too much (and I have concluded that this characteristic does affect the optical alignment and sharpness, after many tests). Bulk K10D batteries purchase for Vancouver BC fellows
Now we all know K10D can use Minolta NP-400 battery. I am about to make a purchase from B&H and can purchase up to ten NP-400 the most. I will keep 2 for myself, the rest will be distributed to Vancouver fellows who want brand name batteries cheap. Based on my calculation, each NP-400 will cost you C$31-35 (PST/GST included). The exact cost will depend how many people are interested. Pickup will be made at Oakridge Shopping Centre or somewhere in Richmond near #3 Rd next week (depends on when the package will be delivered). Some other not-so-distant locations might be okay too. You read me right, acetone. The way I do it is quite straight forward. Fold a piece of toilet paper into a thick small cube, dip a bit acetone, then wipe the coating from centre to edge. Never rewipe. Voila! The coating will be clean as new, and I do mean NEW, no scratch, no mark, no hazy, nothing. Pure isopropyl alcohol works too but takes a little more skill. In fact they work so well I use them for CCD cleaning too. Dirt cheap and not as scary it may seem once you tried. But for CCD, you need a pair of metal tweezers. The MZ series is a little different where the plastic spring shaft was under too much stress and cracked. A newer stronger part was issued later. *ist DS/DL bodies have metal spring shaft which could be loosen by itself. I would imagine a strong threadlock was needed in the 1st place. I think I'll try one more time. 50mm is 50mm regardless of the format, be it 135, 120 or bigger. The detail of the projected image is getting smaller as we go wider of focal length. A standard lens for D/DS/DL is 33mm. Imagine a 33mm lens being mounted on MX which has roughly the same viewfinder magnification, just with the edges being masked off to simulate the DSLR tunnel vision. It will be just as easy/difficult to manual focus as D/DS/DL (but of course, MX has better eyepiece to boot so it's not exactly fair). So if you must compared, use the same focal length, not standard lens for given format. Alan Chan http://www.pbase.com/wlachan __ Do You Yahoo!? Tired of spam? Yahoo! However, it might not be practically correct. What I mean is, 50mm for film SLR = 33mm for *istD/DS/DL practically. Since wider angle lens yield smaller image details through the viewfinder, smaller format is more difficult to manual focus in practical sense. It is like using 33mm on film SLR and it is more difficult to manual focus than 50mm on the same body, just that now the edges have been masked in D/DS/DL. I hope I am making sense. I could be wrong, but I think Pentax have been detached from reality since the A series. They put all their eggs in the A series and Minolta caught them by surprise with 7000. When they introduced the SF series, the F lens line looked ridiculous. With P/PZ series, they decided to offer the either super cheap zooms or super expensive * lenses, nothing in between for the real consumers. They have always seem to produce products that they wanted, instead of what consumers needed; a very poor business practice. They had all the time to introduce high quality f4 zooms (especially tele-zooms) at much lower price than FA* lenses, but they ignore the demand. They kept pumping out their super expensive FA* lenses and finally collapsed. And the self-destructed FA 28-70/4 just didn't cut it. > Nowadays you can read on the net about > Pentax lenses of Leica quality, both by users and prhotography writers (eg. > Mike > Johnston); Pentax outperforming Zeiss lenses for the Hasselblad and Contax (by > Hasselblad and Contax owners); and even magazines now treat Pentax as a brand > for > knowledgeable fundamentalist appreciating unsurpassed optical and mechanical > quality. Did I mention the FA43/1.9 Limited has horrible corner sharpness even stopped way down? Sometimes a little difference could have a huge impact on how you feel. I personally can live with its size although I also feel it's a little large, but what I don't like is the fixed hood. If you plan to use rectangular filters, FA35/2 might be a better buy, though there is a work around with the FA31/1.8. What were the engineers thinking anyway btw? > And, performance wise (build/optical quality/feel...) would it make A > 35/2 redundant? How about FA 35/2? I don't have FA35/2, but FA31/1.8 performs well optically both closeup & wide open. I am not aware of any other Pentax primes in similar range have such performance. But not surprisingly, it incorporates floating elements and glass AL design, both are quite rare for Pentax. Alan Chan http://www.pbase.com/wlachan __ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! This is normal, especially when you are using 36exp film. My friend's Nikon F90X does the same thing. > First impressions follow: The overall feel is like a 90s Toyota, built > to last. Certainly the chase for an equally > affordable MZ-S is still on. The Z-1p is a rather big body, but its relatively short profile makes it more camera bag friendly (to my bags anyway). My uncle has a EOS3 and it fits nowhere in my bags. What you have experienced with noise and vibration is real. In some cases the vibration could cause blurry or double images even on tripod, especially when you are using superteles. MZ/ZX bodies are much much quieter and better dampened, though not as well built. Alan Chan http://www.pbase.com/wlachan __ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! It's a no-brainer. My answer would not be Pentax whether the buyer was looking for a system or just a DSLR. Right now, Pentax has lost their clear direction, well, actually they have been that way for, say 20 years? They were able to offer comparable lenses for decades > and they are unable now? What does this tell me? My observation is that the success of Pentax back in the Spotmatic and M series period was due to their unique yet affordable SLR bodies. However, since the A series, the lack of these quality has failed to capture the attention of the general public. To prove this theory, after the long struggling with the SF & Z/PZ series, the introduction of the MZ/ZX-5 have put Pentax back in serious business again, something not even the MZ-S could do due to its cost. So it seems "unique + affordable" have always been the winning combination for Pentax 135 system. And I think the DS possess these quality as well, although a little short on unique. Am I wrong? Re: New Lens, Same Story?
Could the inconsistant results due to less than perfect support or didn't use 2s self-timer with pre-fire? I have found the 2s MLU is a great way to reduce vibration no matter how rigid the tripod is. Have you tried a more stable tripod/head? The best way to make sure precise focus is a magnifier. But if you are certain there is something wrong (left/right sharpness & light-fall-off look different are indications), return it to Kerrisdale is the best option imho. You may be surprised, but I actually discovered all pics are sharper w/o tripod collar at all shutter speed with or without MLU (with Z-1p anyway, a known vibrator). But then I used B1 ballhead which might make the most difference. I would certainly suggest you do more tests before giving up. Maybe you want to check for any sign of repair too. > What frustration.
