Re: ACR Enhanced Noise Reduction Photos
Very impressive. I guess the DNG files are much bigger than a jpg, but with noise recovery like this on offer it would be tempting to keep the output set to DNG. I read somewhere that jpgs may be supported by lightroom's denoise function in the future. Re: How large is too large...
do you store files as dng files with the lightroom settings built into the files? If so, almost nothing can go wrong, since if you somehow corrupted the catalog so that it lost files or had metadata conflicts, a fresh import of those dng files into a new catalog will reconstruct all the edits and keywords etc that you have given each image. Your previews will be gone, but they will be reconstructed too. That's the reason I embed the metadata into DNG - you are not reliant on the catalog being right. Anne's right. Dave's photo is of the cellar spider https://en.m.wikipedia. org/wiki/Pholcus_phalangioides It is a true spider but does look a bit like some of the harvestmen with long legs. Re: PESO Flying Rat, European Version
correct me if I am wrong, but it is the maximum aperture of the lens TC that matters on an automatic lens, not what you have stopped it down to, since the AF is done with the lens wide open just before the lens is stopped down and the shutter opens. So a setting of F22 on an F5.6 setup will make no difference to the AF capability compared with say F8. Putting a TC on a slow lens is a problem because even wide open, the light levels are already too low for accurate AF. I doubt whether Alan's F9-11 combination will allow AF because this is as open as the lens can go Alastair On 24 March 2014 09:25, Paul Stenquist pnstenqu...@comcast.net wrote: I've tried autofocus at up to f22 with the 1.5X and the DA8 60-250, and it worked fine, although that was with a high contrast scene. Re: Pentax 1.4x converter
wouldn't the lack of a 1.54 crop factor that APC-S sensor cameras have over 35mm frame more-or-less cancel out the 1.4x converter effect so that a DA14mm + 1.4TC on a 35mm frame would end up being a 14/1.54 x 1.4 = 12.7mm FOV on full frame? Re: Decent telephoto for not an arm and a leg
the Pentax-DA 55-300mm F4-5.8 ED is rated quite highly if you want to buy new and should be in your budget - note the new WR version would be more pricey than this. The astrophotography bug is biting and so I'm looking to purchase a lens that will perform on the other end of the spectrum from this one and to pay for it I need to move a couple of my better lenses, but this is a beauty. You already know that LOOONG focal length macros are desirable for working distances. (See the prices for the Pentax-A* 200mm macro, as an example). Here is a macro that gives you 1:2 at 180mm (and the freedom to use other focal lengths as well). The Flat Field means higher quality in the corners than you are probably used to in ordinary macro lenses. This is one of the cult classic lenses that you rarely find in a Pentax mount. This is a gorgeous copy of this lens and it it ready to use on your Pentax DSLR. My only reason for selling this beauty (and another scarce lens) is to pay for a high-dollar lens that I really need more for astrophotography. The Cult Classics page has this to say about the Vivitar Series 1 90-180mm Flat Field: - - - beginning of quote - - - Vivitar 90-180mm f/4.5 Flat-Field Macro Lens Vivitar also made a number of high quality zooms under the Series I label. The 90mm to 180mm f4.5 flat-field VMC lens from 1978 is an optic that has also achieved cult status . This Vivitar 90-180mm f/4.5 lens was really designed for medical photography needs. A ring-light flash unit was designed to mount on the front of this lens too. But as far as I know, it was never released. This original medical market niche explainssome of the design features and range of this high quality zoom lens. This lens is over 6 inches long, and pretty heavy at 2.3 pounds. At a constant f/4.5, you aren't going to value it for its speed either. But it produces excellent results in macro-work down to 1:4 at 90mm and to 1:2 at its 180mm setting. On most modern zoom lenses, macro photography settings are a lower quality setup. Achieving macro capabilities means shifting some elements and so sacrificing some of the zoom's control over spherical and other aberrations. Most current zooms only offer macro settings at either one end or the other of their range. Generally, you would prefer macrophotography at the longer end of the range, but most zooms opt for the easier macro settings at the shorter end of the zoom's range. Only a few zooms offer continuous macro-settings over their full range. Even the better current zooms generally only get to 1:4 to 1:6 reproduction ratios (.e., the object is one-fourt h lifesize on film). The Vivitar 90-180mm f/4.5 Series I macro zoom is designed to provide the highest possible quality continuously down to its closest macro settings. The Vivitar 90-180mm f/4.5 flat-field lens provides high quality macrophotography continuously from 90mm (to 1:4) to 180mm (to 1:2). That's unique, and useful, so you should expect to pay quite a price premium for such a cult status lens! - - - end of quote - - - Here is a set of images produced by this same model of lens: http://www.flickr.com/photos/odderikgarcia/sets/72157606482781081/ and here is another thread with images from the Vivitar Series 1 90-180mm Flat Field http://forum.mflenses.com/viewtopic.php?t=17707 This lens is in excellent cosmetic, optical and mechanical condition. Re: Advice on Use of Macro Lens
the clamp is for Manual Focus mode to stop focus creep when you are eg, holding the camera lens down. The limit is for AF mode to stop the lens hunting all the way through the focal length to try and focus. I think the AF/MF setting overrides the camera's control but I am awy from home so can't look at the lens. I almost always have the lens in MF mode, since I almost never using AF for macro shots. This is by far my favourite lens - great for macro of course and also for portraits but it will show all the wrinkles and spots on your subject! If you want some example shots see for example https://picasaweb.google.com/101251999616543812992/WoolCarderBee#5430979153996617218 Alastair On 5 December 2012 16:00, Larry Colen l...@red4est.com wrote: On Dec 4, 2012, at 6:48 PM, Daniel J. I am not clear, however, how to use the control. Also, why does this control have an MF setting, when manual focus is usually selected on the camera. Is there a difference between selecting manual focus on the lens rather than on the camera? Maybe the old cameras didn't have the easy selection between AF and MF? Maybe it just disables the drive altogether from the lens side. Even more mysterious -- to me -- is the clamp dial. What does this do, and how? When you get the focus dialed on on the subject, assuming you are using a tripod, you clamp the focus so that it doesn't change if you touch the lens. Re: Convert PEF to DNG or not?
I routinely convert my PEF's into DNG's on import into lightroom (and throw away the PEF at that time) and have the lightroom catalog set to write the metadata into the DNG. Re: PESO: inferno
thanks for the comments Bob and Larry. I deliberately rendered it on the dark side to capture the mood I was trying to portray - hence the midtones are intended to be a shade above black, the mist close to white, and areas of black with black silhouettes for individual trees and bits of the cliff above the nearer crater. I suspect the appearance will depend very much on your monitor settings. It looks how I intended it to look on my recently calibrated monitor here, but I can imagine results will vary on other people's monitors. Am interested in how others find it - perhaps I've gone too far with lowering the tones in the mid-range? http://www.luminous-landscape.com/reviews/cameras/pentax-645d-first.shtml Here's a hands-on first look report and video about a pre-production 645D from Nick Devlin for the online magazine Luminous Landscapes which is usually a pretty reliable source for sensible reviews. I, of course want one, but almost certainly will never actually do so! Re: Lightroom 2.7 question: how to edit 2 pictures side by side
You can sync white settings in jpgs in Lightroom just fine. Get the white balance setting right in one photo and while still in the develop module, select the other pictures that you want to duplicate the white balance settings in. You should see your master has a whiter surround in the filmstrip than the other selected photos - this indicates that it is the master selection and any sync commands will use this photo's settings as the blueprint to apply to the others. Click the Sync button (this only appears when you have more than one photo selected) and a dialog box will come up. Check the settings you want to sync - in this case the white balance, and leave the others boxes unchecked and then hit 'Synchronise' and it's done! Easy and saves heaps of time. You can synch any develop settings this way Alastair On Sat, Aug 21, 2010 at 8:53 AM, Bob Sullivan rf.sulli...@gmail.com wrote: Congratulations on the new family member. Re: Lightroom workflow Q
Cory, I am sure that Tim's and Godfrey's approaches would do an admirable job at keeping two catalogs in synch, but to acheive the first part of your request to have lightroom remember develop settings, and keywords etc, shoot or convert into DNG files - lightroom then writes the metadata into the file itself so when you import it brings these settings with the images. Alternately, if you shoot in jpg or pef, you can write sidecar files and they get imported along with the image - just make sure you save metadata to files prior to import, or have lightroom do it automatically by setting this in your preferences. The trick with this approach is for keywords to use a consistent set and hierarchy. You can either remember these, or better still export the keywords from the master and import into the clone so they are there ready for use when you come to keyword a new shoot. You apply the keywords in your macbook and when they come into your desktop they will match your existing ones or add any new ones. As for the collections - I don't think these are stored in the metadata so you may need to do manual assignment to collections when you get the images into the desktop Alastair On Tue, May 11, 2010 at 3:02 AM, Cory Waters cbwat...@bellsouth.net wrote: I have lightroom on my macbook and also on my desktop. I usually do most of my work on my desktop but occsionally, like when I'm away from home, I'll upload photos to my laptop to clear my flash cards and have a look at what's I've got. It's no problem then to copy those photos over to my desktop on my home network and import them into my desktop library. I just go to the folder with the photos from the appropriate dates and plant it in the correct folder on the other box. When I import them into the library, they get coppied to my NAS for another safety copy. The hitch here is: I'm likely to have made changes to the photo like keywords, developing adjustments, or selection to a collection while I was looking at them on the laptop. Is there any way to import the photos to my desktop library with the changes? I'd also like to mirror my collections from the laptop on the desktop. I'll be picking photos from my trip to, I duno, lets say u Chicago? that I want to put up on my Smugmug page but when I get home, the only way I know of to get that collection on my desktop is to make a list of file #s in the collection and manually select them again. I'm not sure if I've been clear here so poke me if you don't understand what I'm after. I'll try again. Re: any PDML members in the South of France?
Hi Bob we will be leaving Montpellier on the 19th and will probably be hiring a car for a week or so - I'll email you off list Alastair On Thu, Apr 29, 2010 at 6:57 AM, Bob W p...@web-options.com wrote: My wife and I and baby daughter will be traveling in Provence and Languedoc-Roussillon in June and would be interested in meeting up with PDML members if there are any there? Alastair I will be based in the town of Florac, Lozere - a departement in the Languedoc-Rousillon region - between 19th June and 1st July. I will be without motorised transport. Florac is smack in the middle of the Cevennes national park, not far from the Gorge du Tarn, which is among the incontournables of the region.
