The 75 has a little dust inside. Any disassembly manuals out there?

Really looking forward to using this lens. May add a 105 to it later this next

2017-07-23 Thread Collin Brendemuehl
https://www.flickr.com/photos/55001392@N08/albums/72157683359017832

Went back to Wisconsin this weekend for the annual family picnic. Don't get
there as much as I'd like.

Hadn't been on the old family farm since we moved off it in '62.

Not much has changed. The pine trees around the house have gotten bigger.

The old barn is showing its age. I think the house is about 1920 era and the
barn, maybe late 30s. But I never really knew.

Something I noticed about landscape shooting in the area: You can still
shoot 'scapes of the rolling hills and do so without power lines in the
pics.

That's getting tough to do any more. And of course not everywhere but there
remain lots of good places to shoot.

Blue spot

I've used a number of film lenses on the Pentax DSLRs and the only one that

brands have had no issue here.
Has anyone noted any other lenses with this characteristic?

Canon 85/1.8 and 85/1.4 are quite sharp but the color rendition is lacking a
bit. (That might be a sensor or camera issue. But it matters.)
The Samyang 85/1.5 and Tamron 85/1.8 have good color rendering but are not
as sharp. (Also not as expensive.)
The Nikon 85/1.4 and the Sigma 85/1.4 compare favorably. Both really sharp

The one compelling reason I can come up with is for the better interaction
of the newer coatings to the sensor.
It seems that they're all made to play well together.
Of course there's always correcting/improving it in PS/LR. And then there's
not needing to correct/improve it in PS/LR.

If such an offering would maintain the apparent (yes, assumed) quality

A question of size

That DFA* 1.4/50 is obscenely large.
Of course that's just a mockup they showed as the distance window is
plugged.
Still, makes me wonder if Pentax is going to pull a Sony and go for the
prosumer market & less targeting the enthusiast.
I say that b/c the form factor / styling is reminiscent of the Zeiss line on
the Sony.
There's no need for such a large lens unless it's actually superb.

He is more than impressed, especially with the pixel shifting and the astral

And he is really excited that there is now a world-class Pentax. It's been a
long time since the world-class LX.

(Too bad the MZ-S was so short-lived.)

which.

Needless to say he is thrilled.

The camera is nice.

Get a good focusing loupe. You'll really come to appreciate it.
And a really good focusing cloth.
And a changing tent. A bag is ok, but a tent is wonderful.

And a good lens. The 135/235 is fine for b but that's it's limit. (I had
one.)
A modern NIkkor or Rodenstock makes a fine lens and these days the prices
are quite modest.
If you can dig up a Rodenstock Ysarex *135mm*, that's a keeper. It's among
the last of the series and performs beautifully.
If you happen to be rich, a Super Symmar ...
Or camera bling ...
http://static.photo.net/attachments/bboard/00F/00FHx2-28225684.jpg

A few shots with a plasmat or a Tessar and you will soon see the image
formation difference over and above the Gaussian design.

It's like Toyota introducing the Avalon as a sales step between Camry &
Lexus.
Many are happy with the 24MP K3 class of camera.
But we all know the improvement in image formation on larger sensors.
A 24MP FF would meet that need though the price would probably be higher.
(This is evident in Bill Gekas' shots w/ the 645 vs the smaller sensor. It
makes a difference.)
And the older the smaller sensor gets the more its price will drop as a
commodity.
A $400 or so price difference is enough to allow good customer choice.
If it were a $200 difference I would agree.
But that's speculation. We'll just have to wait and see.

Tokina SD 35-105 with B+W filter.
SMC 24/2.8 -- the original K with case. No grime it the numbering. Just a

Original Pentax lens hood with case. Hood is for the 50mm lenses.

Just a couple tiny little marks from miniscule amounts of handling.

#1 The sensor will match some Nikon model. That seems all too obvious.
#2 The software will not have all the features of the competition.
#3 Pentax will introduce some software gizmo to make the camera unique and

Dear Pentax,

Personally, I would still like to see a decent Wi-Fi solution in every
camera, with appropriate login for networking.
Perhaps it should be located in a grip with its own battery since not
everyone needs one.
The grip would also have its own CPU. Some low-power solution like a
smartphone cpu.
Likewise the memory cards would become a disk-sharing solution with the
camera having preference.
This approach would all more efficient transfer of information than do the
current implementations.

Hire me. I can do this.

Of course you won't notice the difference on the web or 4x6 print.

But remember way back when *all* our films had more resolving power
than any of our lenses yet we sought finer-grained films. Why? Because
they directly affect the result.

To revisit an old analogy, it's like listening to brass on CD v LP. It's
harsh on CD and clear on an old LP.
The timbre, the nuances, are all clarified with greater detail. The CD
satisfies most people.

Same goes for a denser sensor. Better edge clarity, richer colors ...
everything improves.

Now, it may be at 92% - 95% top of the curve that makes no diff to the
amateur.

I don't understand

2014-09-10 Thread Collin Brendemuehl
When we were in Philly I saw far more mirrorless than DSLRs in use.
After getting home I was chatting with a local store owner who found that
odd since mirrorless sales are only a fraction of the market. Maybe they
were all in one place at one time?
Then last weekend we were in Wisconsin and Illinois. (Fresh curds ... yum.)
Had a good conversation with a pro who shoots for stock.
He uses (another brand) DSLR for action and a Sony mirrorless for general
use. He likes the size/weight for carrying around, and the good lenses
don't hurt.

So I wonder ... is it just the form/shape that chases people away from these
cameras?

the front e-dial barely works now despite efforts to clean
it with contact cleaner. It will get better for a while and then
revert back to registering turns in the wrong direction.

Read: Becker 1492

Re: Oh no, not again.

2014-08-08 Thread Collin Brendemuehl
LOL. No no. I blame myself of course. Still its no fun having gear
break down after sinking money into it. Look at the abuse that metal
film cameras and lenses could take. Those days of rugged cameras are
kind of over sadly. The plastic zooms I doubt will last me 30 years,
but the M50 1.7 I've been using sometimes lately surely will.

That's because we're carrying computers as much as we are cameras.
What we need is a mechanical digital camera.
Let the camera read the dials and respond accordingly, but use old-style
dials with the new electronics for the shutter.
Might be workable.

Went to Philadelphia this weekend.
No time to look anyone up -- writer's conference up in Langhorne.
Great eats. Horrible parking, though the natives sure have the art down.

I'm not sure why it bothers you.

At least the styling here is tasteful.
It could have been much worse.

The K3 does what?

Lateral chromatic aberration correction?
What an awesome feature -- takes care of many issues with just-average
lenses.
Can anyone here report how well that works?
Do the other makers also have that feature?

To suggest that nobody really needs it would be like telling wedding (film)

Had an interesting talk with a pj shooter Sat.

2014-06-16 Thread Collin Brendemuehl
He chose Canon over Nikon because of the sensor.
The feature of the sensor is the color from CMOS.
Apparently he likes the old Kodak look of CMOS (as a matter of comparison)
over against the Fuji look of the sensors in Nikon.
I'd not read or heard anyone use that language before.
But like me he's been shooting a long time. His car tag reads F8 NB THR.

Re: On the road to GFM

2014-05-29 Thread Collin Brendemuehl
We live nearby (Columbus area) and go there every couple of years.
But I did not know of that feature. Will have to look it up.
The best summer shooting there, imo, is to walk the trail around the lowest
part. (But the rangers will make you stay on the trail.)
It is also a good place in winter to capture some large ice flows.
