So... K-5II huh? But without a net work link, Do I want that?
Still shooting with the K10 here. K5 was attractive but I haven't been shooting enough to justify ANOTHER thousand dollar camera. When I bought the used I decided it was the last PS camera I'd buy because my phone takes decent pictures and the ease of sharing with the network is just a killer feature. So now the K-5II. And the question: Is the face that it's a specialized tool offset the fact that it doesn't connect to the internet? Another way: Do i ever want another camera that doesn't have network capability? I don't know yet. Is it silly that I can buy a phone for so little that DOES share photos and a camera for so much that doesn't? Hell yes. I mean, what are 90% of us doing with any of these photos anyway? Could CanNikon and the rest NOT really understand this? Is GFM on your wall?
Today's thread about GFM got me looking at past galleries. And it got me thinking. I've taken many photos on that mountain in the three or four trip up to North Carolina. I'm pretty proud of some of them. I only have one on my wall though. It's the one Mark printed for the gallery exhibit in Chicago. http://cwaters.smugmug.com/Photography/GFM-NPW-2009/IGP4917/552189319_KcztB-L-2.jpg So I'm wondering; since GFM probably has had more frames of film shot and pixels captured by PDML members than any other place in the world, Who else has photographs from that mountain actually on the wall at home? Re: Mic for DSLR video?
I bet the camera has some bit automatic circuitry that adjusts the input level for external sources. Given the lack of importance video people generally place in how the audio sounds (really tall Empire-types excluded, of course), I wouldn't be surprised if that circuit was designed by the copy boy during lunch. I know that's not helping you with your problem. Too bad the camera doesn't have a line-in jack; you could use an external mic-pre and get some control over the level going in to the camera and a headphone jack for monitoring what you're recording. Of course, at this point, you're looking more like a pro video recording guy than a still camera guy with video capability... Re: Mic for DSLR video?
I don't believe the impedance mismatch is the source of your problems. Most audio electronics will have a much higher specified input impedance than the corresponding output of the source device. There's some quick reading here: http://hyperphysics.phy-astr.gsu.edu/hbase/audio/imped.html#c1 with a link at the bottom for some more specifically about microphones. It's about the desired result (fidelity) vs the perfect circuit I can't say why the mic you bought sounds like crap. You ought to be able to purchase about any small shotgun or other directional mic, along with a hot-shoe based shock mount and, if need be, an adapter cable from XLR to mini jack and get better sound than the built-in. Microphones do provide varying output voltages so some need more input amplification than others, but given the market these things are shooting for, I'd bet they are all about the same. Come to think of it, I wonder if there's a setting in the camera for audio level adjustment or for stereo vs mono external mic. You wouldn't have an9other camera (or anything else) handy to test the mic with? Cory On 12/22/2011 10:49 AM, Dario Bonazza wrote: Joseph McAllister wrote: Dario, I purchased the RODE VideoMic that is show in all the images from Pentax re: video recording. You have to spend a few bucks more for a proper wind attenuating cover, the ones that look like a shaggy dogs tail. They just slip over the existing attenuator, and are tied in place with a little string noose. Thanks JoMac. I understand everybody suggest that microphone. However, I have two doubts: 1 - I'd like a directional mic for recording at a concert, hopefully getting music instead of public noise. The Rode SVM is stereo, but not directional. 2 - So far, I got the best results with a cheapo-cheapo (10 bucks or less) PC microphone I happen to own. That gives a better sound level than either the K-5 built-in mic or the shotgun SG-108 microphone. Is the 200 ohm output of the SG-108 shotgun mic responsible for the barely audible sound level I got? I had this suspect since the K-5 specs say that input impedance of the mic port is 2.2 Kohm. If so, why should that Rode SVM mic any better, as it also gives 200 ohm output like the SG-108? Mate, I hate to say this but with a cheap and cheerful camera-mounted 3.5mm jack unbalanced mic, you are not going to get the sound you think you are! I use a Sennheiser MKH-416 mic - one of the very best (if not the best) directional microphones and when I am shooting at a concert, the only way to get decent sound is to forget that and plug up to the sound mixer's outputs! Usually they are very polite but sometimes you get a Cory Waters to deal with --- ;-) However, I appreciate that you are simply wanting to record ambient audio, so working within those limitations - and once you have got a mic you are happy with (and hopefully Rob or Cory might be able to advise on the impedance question you have elsewhere in this thread) then I would make sure you sit well back and in the middle somewhere if the speakers are either side of the stage. I suspect that because concerts like to churn it out loud, and with no way of adjusting the input level manually, let alone monitoring it, you will find the automatic gain control in the camera - if indeed it has one - will be struggling to compensate. In extreme cases you get a 'pumping' effect which, when listened to later, will cause you to ram empty wine bottles in your ears in despair! That's if you can make out the pumping music through the mini-jack hum. But be positive :-) Good luck! -- Cheers, Cotty ___/\__ || (O) | People, Places, Pastiche -- http://www.cottysnaps.com _ -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

It was just about the perfect place with lots of shapes and textures. If you can't make a good image with Tri-X and a broken down fence... maybe you ought to try video. I made lots of stops, re-remembering how to use the MX meter and digging my 40mm Pancake. And then I noticed I was at frame 26. And then 28. None the less, our trek yielded some good photos for me and a *prize-winner* for John. Not bad, all things considered. John and I also hatched a scheme to take advantage of the unusually clear weather to try to get sunrise photos from the Cragway Trail on Sunday morning. This trail has stunning views but is usually socked-in with fog in the morning (Doug and I tried a pre-dawn photo expedition there a couple of years ago and enjoyed 50-yard visibility during sunrise). We planned a 4:30 AM departure, which seemed reasonable at the time. We soon found an extra 4 people added to the expedition. We were up at 4:15 an on the trail only slightly later than planned (due to the extra difficulty of coordinating the larger group) but made our way to the spot called Top Crag View by 5:50 after an aggressively-paced hike up the trail. Hiking difficult trails by the light of headlamps in pitch darkness is an acquired taste. Despite the unusual lack of fog, sunrise was obscured by a bank of clouds on the eastern horizon, but there were some fairly good photographs to be had and everyone enjoyed the hike. Still, the early start made for a long day... Photo contest judging and awards preparation were completed ahead of schedule(!) and the contest entries were some of the best ever. I think the Doug and Mark Show was one of the best ever, too. It really helps when you're prepared and relaxed. Amazing, huh? But the 4:15 AM start made for a long day and even with an afternoon nap I'm fading now. I've backed up all my SD and CF cards onto the laptop and I'm going to quit work for the day and relax. Re: K5 hanged and a question about it
I don't think I'd worry about it. My *istD did this a few times. The K10 has done it too. Remember, you're carrying around a *computer*. Sometimes, the best advice is a clean reboot. sometimes being good isn't good ;)
I've been shooting at my daughter's soccer games for a while now. I'm using my K10 and the DA50-200 I got when that camera was new (I think there's a newer version out now) If I make half an effort, I can come away with three to five shots per game that I'm more or less happy with after a little processing. There's another ten to fifteen that I'll post out to the parent group. They're not likely to be as critical as me, they're happy to have shots of their kid, and I assume they're just happy someone else is taking pictures so they don't have to ;) The problem is, SHE sees the fifteen to twenty post worthy shots per game and thinks they're fine. This means that there's virtually no need for me to spend a grand on a new faster telephoto lens. In the back of my mind, buried deep under years of obsessive desire for enablement, I know that a new lens won't make my photos *That* much better. It's not the lens that screws up most of my shots... But, of course, LBA is strong. The 60-250 calls. Is video a gimmick feature that you just don't use? Are your videos too racy? (let us judge ;) Is making decent videos just too hard? Or are you guys just too much the old dog type or even purists? For my part, having at least six video cameras lying around the house (I'm actually surprised by this number but I'm counting the cell phones and PS cameras + 1 Flip style camera), I find that the same problems that have plagued us since the days of film-based home movies. Mark, I do appreciate your asking the group what we think about the matter. If you feel like our dollars will go farther with one group than another, then make the move. It's obvious that you've been thinking more about it than I have. An $800K salary CEO seems a bit on the high side, but who am I to judge ;) I like the idea of helping folks worldwide, but I'm not sure if it matters if our few dollars go overseas. Hell, if they come up with some new treatment or an actual cure, one would think it would spread around the world pretty quick. I did like Bob's idea of donating photographs to someplace they would be appreciated. (My wife appreciates mine on the wall over there, but you know what I mean.) The disadvantages of MSF from the standpoint of the PDML Photo Annual are that we're too small to get much priority from them - we'd be a small fish in a big sea. It would be difficult for them to give us less attention than CureSearch did, but it's certainly possible. They are also based about 3000 miles away from me, so we'd be communicating entirely by email. Been there and done that. With the Dana-Farber's Pediatric Oncology Global Outreach we'd be their only specifically dedicated publicity/fundraising group (so far) - with the hope that both we and they would grow with time - so we'd be a big(ish) fish in a little sea. Re: Musings on image selection for the Annual
Rob, I'm very critical of my own photographic images. My wife gets frustrated when we look at my take from, say, last weekend's outing, and I'm all yeah, but the horizon... or M, there's a tree growing out of her head. She's usually more of a Ohhh, look at the girls. Aren't they having fun? type, though I do trust her eye when she's looking with a more artistic intent. I honestly don't know how to feel when people who don't *love* me are honestly complementary of my work. The gallery opening in Chicago was truly uncharted territory with so many people whose work I really admire actually commenting on mine. I think that was nice, but I have my issues. That being said, for the Annual, I'm picking out the very best things I did in the last year. It's not hard. I used Lightroom to sort for the year and added photos I *really* like (only about six) to a quick collection, made my decision, asked my wife what she thought, did a very little bit of processing (I actually ported one of them out to Elements!) and uploaded the files. Having 80+ favorite images from one year's shooting is, for me, not likely to ever be a problem. Cory kind of our there on my sleeve now if you don't like my selections ;) On 1/21/2011 1:41 AM, Rob Studdert wrote: Hi Guys, Looking back at my Pentax images from last year I didn't shoot with my Pentax kit a great deal, about 2400 images all up with probably 10% of them sequences for panos, about 10% of images shot for myself and the remainder records of events and family. PESO: Snow again and W90 thoughts
Snow and ice again in northern Georgia: http://cwaters.smugmug.com/photos/1152605696_dsW9H-L.jpg It's been quite a while since I posted an image here. Some of you have seen many more photos from me on Facebook over the last year. That's mainly because it's so damned easy to snap a shot with my phone and upload it on the spot. Also, I haven't had many opportunities this year to get out of town. Vacations allow me to get out of pattern, usually presenting me with new places, faces, and stuff I want to remember (inspiration). I'll totally be carrying my K10 through Disney World, or the museums in Washington D.C. but not so much on my daily trip to work, you see. My 2010 production was so lean that I was afraid I wouldn't be able to pick ANYTHING to submit for the PDML Annual. Fear not though, dear readers, for I did find a few images I'm proud of and submitted three this morning. This image was taken with the W90 I recently picked up second hand. I figured it would be nice to have a small rugged camera to carry around when I didn't want the bulk of the K10 kit. A few weeks into ownership and aside from the underwater stuff, I'm not sure what it does that my Motorola Droid2 doesn't do. In fact, the camera apps I have for the Droid do LOTS of cool stuff this PS won't. The W90 has a lanyard and belt clip, it's more shock and water resistant, it's a cooler color than the Droid (green), it has lots of shooting modes (the image was made with Surf and Snow mode), and it does make cool time-lapse movies. I'm pretty sure the image quality is better, though I've seen some less than encouraging images so far. I'm not making a judgment about IQ just yet as I haven't used it enough to know that I'm not just doing it wrong. It does NOT, however share with facebook, SMS, email, or upload the photos with a few strokes of the fingertip. And this is where I'm not sure it makes much sense to carry it around in addition to my phone. Maybe an Eye-Fi card would help but I don't think PS cameras are destined to be around too long if they don't get web access somehow. How does a camera that costs what this one does and is marketed like it is not have GPS? I guess where I'm at so far is that for day to day situations where I'm just at work or whatever, the phone is already on me so I don't need to carry another camera. If I'm going out somewhere that I'd like a little better image quality but don't want to carry the K10, I guess that's when I'll clip the W90 on. I'm sure I wouldn't pay full price for one though. Re: So, 60-250 F4 or a 3rd party 70-200 2.8?
It seems like those of you who have the 60-250 do not regret your purchase. Some other lenses have been suggested. The 300 prime would be nice, but I'm too lazy for that lens. The Bigma is interesting to be sure. I'm not sure about spending so much for a lens with 5.6 in the name, and it's REALLY big. I may be too lazy for that lens too. I've heard some unflattering things about the Sigma 100-300 (someone I know said he wouldn't sell his to anyone he knew) Sigma has a newer 120-300, 120-400, and 150-500 lenses, all in the 4.5-6.3(!) range. I'm wondering it I'd be frustrated in the short end of the range with those. I DO want the HSM to work on whatever I buy. I get your reluctance Boris. But like you said, there are some advantages to living a huge market like the U.S. I'm not one who's super nit-picky about lens sharpness. My version of the brick wall tests include my whacking the lens against it when walking through doorways, etc. I figure I'm screwing up way more of my shots than this lens will. Chances are, the 60-250 is way better than 90% of my kit anyway. Now, how do I get this past Mrs. Claus? In my Land Rover I use a stereo system - a 3.5mm lead out of the Macbook to 2 RCA females and then another lead with 2 RCA males leading to 2 XLR males which go into 2 Fostex speakers (don't ask, it's what I had in the parts bin). This gives me left and right audio as needed while editing. I took half of this setup off the Land Rover and popped it onto my single Fostex in the house and that works fine. But the lead I bought doesn't :-( So - take me through from the 3.5mm jack into the lead and at the XLR end, what should be connected to what? Lightroom workflow Q
I have lightroom on my macbook and also on my desktop. I usually do most of my work on my desktop but occsionally, like when I'm away from home, I'll upload photos to my laptop to clear my flash cards and have a look at what's I've got. It's no problem then to copy those photos over to my desktop on my home network and import them into my desktop library. I just go to the folder with the photos from the appropriate dates and plant it in the correct folder on the other box. When I import them into the library, they get coppied to my NAS for another safety copy. The hitch here is: I'm likely to have made changes to the photo like keywords, developing adjustments, or selection to a collection while I was looking at them on the laptop. Is there any way to import the photos to my desktop library with the changes? I'd also like to mirror my collections from the laptop on the desktop. I'll be picking photos from my trip to, I duno, lets say u Chicago? that I want to put up on my Smugmug page but when I get home, the only way I know of to get that collection on my desktop is to make a list of file #s in the collection and manually select them again. I'm not sure if I've been clear here so poke me if you don't understand what I'm after. I'll try again. Re: smc FA 35-80mm f3.5-5.6 for the sake of my LBA...
I had one for a while. Build quality was questionable. It felt pretty plastic, if you know what I mean. The images were OK for me though the lens didn't get good reviews from whatever pixel peepers used to be in the film days. The zoom range wasn't enough on either end and it's too slow. It saved my istD from certain death when Daughter 1.0 pulled the pair from the high kitchen counter one day. Broke the lens in half but the camera was fine. I replaced it with a 28-105. Despite their claims that they respond within three hours (or a little longer on Saturdays), I didn't get a response on Saturday or Monday. I sent filled out the web form again on Tuesday. They responded within the half-hour with a return shipping label email and a separate message with instructions and the word than another book had been ordered for me. The book arrived today and it's fine. So, while they didn't respond to my initial complaint for some reason, they certainly handled the problem well once dialog was established. My two cents.
