Re: Sigma 70-200/2.8 compared to Bigma?
I have the Sigma 70-200/2.8 APO EX (not DG) and it works great on film and digital. It is not only bright when you look through the viewfinder and easy to manually focus, its smallest aperture is F32, which I love for landscape shots. I have not used the 50-500, but if you send it to me yours, I can try it out and give you a much more detailed comparison. Good luck. Derek -- Original message -- From: ing. Is there any other light tele lenses you would recommend? Thanks, David. -- ing. david lacina | http://photo.lacina.net | +47 90 85 82 01
Re: Bag Question
Thanks Aaron for your suggestion. The laptop is about 15 diagonally across, so the Kipling does sound like it would work. I'll definitely take a look at it. Thanks again, Derek -- Original message -- From: Aaron Reynolds [EMAIL PROTECTED] Is it a reasonable expectation to find a bag that will meet my needs? Are their any other bags that I missed? Any comments or suggestions would be appreciated. How big is the laptop? I have a nice bag that doesn't look much like a camera bag from Kipling -- it has a slot in the front that comfortably fits my white iBook (but not my old blueberry iBook, the toilet seat lookin' kind), and an expandable main compartment with velcro dividers that has three long slots, each deep enough to hold an SLR with a 300 f4 or even something a little longer. It came with flippy dividers to split each deep pocket in two, so you can put two shorter lenses in each, one on top of the other with a divider in between. The pocket in the flap is big enough for a couple of hardcover books. You'd have no trouble fitting everything you've listed into it, and more. -Aaron
Re: Bag Question
Godfrey, Thank you for both of your replies. As usual, they will help a lot. Thanks again, Derek -- Original message -- From: Godfrey DiGiorgi [EMAIL PROTECTED] I have a Timbuk2 Commute XL that does this duty for me. It's not the most convenient camera bag, but it is an excellent carryall for when I need to carry computer or a couple of portfolios, plus camera, lenses and the usual pile of other junk. They also make a slightly smaller model, the Commute. I took the larger one ... it will fit up to a laptop with a 17 screen ... so that I'd have the extra room just in case, and I'm glad I did. The bottom and back are padded, I usually use a couple of Domke wraps inside when carrying camera equipment to keep things from banging around. The key to why this bag is so good is their excellent shoulder strap. It instantly adjusts from wear it across your back with no strain for walking to wear it slung at your front/side so you can get things in and out quickly. That plus good compartments, pockets and padding for your back make the bag a winner. See it at http://www.timbuk2.com ... I've used mine almost to the exclusion of all my other camera bags for the past three months. It's my walking office. Re: Bailing out.
At programming shop where I work, the technical consultants that were brought in started using the term workflow to describe the software customizations we do from initial request to deployment in production, and it stuck. Then we implement Oracle, and they have their Workflow development product/tool. And, of course, we have a document imaging product that accounting department purchased called Workflow that we end up supporting as well. So when somebody mentions workflow, nobody knows what they are talking about. Needless to say, I was thrilled to death to find that digital photography uses the term Workflow. Makes my ears cringe. Derek -- Original message -- From: Godfrey DiGiorgi [EMAIL PROTECTED] Although I agree with your concept, I never once in my 20+ years of being around software development efforts heard the word workflow in connection with programming. There the term used was logic. Workflow describes a higher level process sequence than the logic of a computer program, in my opinion. I started hearing the word in recent years in connection with user interface design and the study of human factors engineering, not programming. I think the following sentence characterizes the difference: Computer programs follow logic, the causal sequence of their instructions, while humans exploit workflow, the conceptual steps of the endeavor to achieve a goal. Logic operates at the start, do this, do this, test: if this then do that, end level. Workflow operates at the transfer RAW files from camera storage to computer storage, convert files to DNG format, open files with Bridge and assign metadata template or remove film from camera and place in processing tank, complete development process, dry film and view on light table level. Godfrey On Mar 28, 2006, at 1:53 PM, graywolf wrote: Workflow is a term from programming. To write a program you have to figure out the steps and their order involved in completing a process. That is what workflow is. In fact any process that involves more than a single step has a workflow. You can not even make a cup of coffee without following a workflow. For instance you have a real problem if you try to drink the cup of coffee before putting it in the cup. However the term is mostly used by computer folk (and those terrible people, efficency experts) thus I can understand your not wanting to deal with it, Frank.

I like using Velvia 50 (and the Ilford PAN 50) for long time exposures with a polarizer and a graduated filter or two. I'm not suggesting that I am looking for the finest grain. When did Velvia 100 non-F launch? I was running my lab until May and at that point we had heard nothing about it -- was it late summer? I have to wonder what the point is of such a film -- they didn't keep dual inventory of Provia 100 F and non-F nor Astia 100 F and non-F. Preach it Brother Tom!!! Derek -- Original message -- From: Tom C [EMAIL PROTECTED] Pure heresy... that's what it is! It is a rapid line that runs on a road all its own called Busway, thorough the middle of the San Fernando Valley, connecting Woodland Hills / Warner Center with the Metrolink subway system starting in North Hollywood. The busyway has synchronized traffic lights that keep the bus moving all the time. This means that as the busline road crosses major streets, traffic stops on those surface roads. I rode the Orange Line today as a novelty, to see how the experience was going to be. My wife came with me. We had been on the bus for less than two minutes, when suddenly it was struck by a fast moving car that ran its red light. The car broadsided the bus. The car was seriously damaged, and driver taken to the hospital in critical condition (she was later upgraded to stable). We were then put through a triage routine by the first responders to determine who (if anyone) was injured. Mostly any injuries were just people pretending to be injured, thinking their gravy train had come in. Despicable really. Anyway, it held us all up by about 90 minutes. Fortunately I had my camera. It clearly went through a hard time when it was forced to abandon the MZ-D, and I personally think it has bounced back from that rather well. A company with less financial muscle, and less commitment to photography, would have given up then. The fact that it didn't speaks volumes. As the more level-headed members of this site point out, the current DSLR range (the D, incidentally, is still available) meets the needs of most people, even most PDML members. Yes, it would be nice to have extra bells and whistles, but most of us don't actually need them, and many of us wouldn't pay very much for them. That's not to deny that there are some photographers whose needs are clearly not well served by the present line-up. However, they are a small minority, and with luck (and a little time), the D replacement will address their problems. It is noteworthy that there are now very few list members left who have not bought a Pentax DSLR. Clearly, there must be something good about them. In my view the Pentax DSLRs provide a much better picture-taking experience than any 35mm film camera, and I expect my two D bodies to be active for some time to come, whatever the future of Pentax. That means I will continue to buy lenses. Fuji Velvia 50 discontinued?
I use Fuji Velvia ISO 50 for my landscape photography. However, I have heard that Fuji is discontinuing Velvia 50. Hence, I have the following questions: 1. Is it true that Fuji is discontinuing Velvia 50? 2. Does anyone else use Velvia 50? 3. Does anyone have a suggested replacement film? I was considering using Agfa RSX II ISO 50 or pulling Velvia 100 once my Velvia 50 freezer stock runs out and I am unable to purchase anymore. I have had some success with Agfa before, but the Velvia seemed at least marginally better. On the other hand, I have heard that pulling Velvia 100 causes some color distortions. Any thoughts? Thank you in advance for your suggestions and comments. Derek

Re: Irrelevant Poll: What do you WANT in a digital camera?
Here is my list: FF sensor. Full support for K/M series lenses. Low base ISO, like maybe 25 or 50 (Maybe interchangeable sensors to get the right base ISO). Interchangeable viewfinders (One with a popup flash would be ok for those who want it). Interchangeable focus screens (with a decent selection of screens). 5 fps, with bracketing, up to 15-20 frames (Maybe make the buffer memory upgradeable). Both CF and SD memory slots. Weather sealed body No Picture modes. Selectable TTL or P-TTL (thanks for the idea Godfrey) Its not much, but I think that would be sufficient for me. Derek Howdy gang! After spending about four lifetimes following the recent spew about non-A lens support, I started to think about what I would really WANT in a digital camera. (This has nothing to do with the possible petition to Pentax.) Just for kicks (and a bit of flame-free fun) I'd like to know what you would WANT if you could have your DSLR your way. Throw caution to the wind. Don't even consider what is feasible or marketable. Just let us know what your dream digital camera looks like. Here's mine: I wanna be able to select ISO and shutter speed with knobs. It should support an available line of manual focus lenses. K-mount (un-crippled) is good. Screw mount or M-mount would be cool, too. I don't need auto focus, auto aperture, or auto anything. Monochrome sensor. Something in the 4 to 6 MP range is good. Metal chassis. Metal body. RAW and JPEG. PC sync. No built-in flash. Less than $1500 US. Things I don't need, but could live with: Hot shoe. Picture modes. Features I would like, but could live without: In-camera DNG support. That's about it. -- Scott Loveless http://www.twosixteen.com -- You have to hold the button down -Arnold Newman

Once again, sign me up! Derek Special interest groups who wish to get someone's attention will sometimes buy an ad in a prestigious publication. A full-page ad in Japan's most prestigious photo magazine would probably get the attention of Pentax. I would guess it would cost about $5000, although it might be quite a bit more. But if it were only 5K, 100 people could pull it off for $50 each. Tough to organize, but probably quite effective. Paul Not sure why Iowa would impress them, though. Please elucidate. I will take all suggestions from list members as to the planning and execution of this project. RE: First non DSLR digicam with 10MP APS sensor- contradiction
Can I please get a diagram of this? Derek Its very simple. If the working diameter of the rear element and the diagonal size (format) of the sensor remain constant, then the further the rear element is from the sensor the NARROWER the corner to corner angle cone angle becomes eminating from the rear element and the deviation from pendicular in the corner of the sensor becomes smaller (better) as the lens is moved away. Do not confuse this angle with the angle of view, they don't have to match and will vary depending on optical design... RE: Pentax winder me II - who had used?
I have had my ME-II winder for about 20 years on my ME Super, and ergonomically, I don't think any camera fits better in my hand. The winder makes the ME Super easy and comfortable to hold. The only downside is that while the ME Super is probably the quietest Pentax camera (at least in terms of shutter) ever made, the ME-II winder will wake the dead. However, even with the winder attached and turned on, if you need stealth, just pressing the shutter release on the ME Super body (as the body shutter release stays on manual even if winder is on). The switches for the winder are up by the trigger button, so it is easy to turn on and off. I still use the ME Super just because if fits so well in my hand with the winder. I have not had any problems with the ME-II winder and would highly recommend it. Derek The ME-II winder works very well with The ME Super and almost all other M bodies designed for a winder. Also work well with the Super A/Program. It gives a good feel and grip to the camera. It is however quite loud, sounds just like you'd expect an older winder to sound. The nice thing though is that you can turn it off and use the camera manually, just using the winder for a grip and to add some weight to the camera. I still own 2 of these but don't use them much anymore, when I need auto- wind I grab the ZX-5n or one of the PZ bodies. You probably noticed that the rewind-motor changes pitch near the end of the rewinding process. I believe this is at the moment the film leaves the uptake spool. If you open the back just then, it might work. However, note that I have not done this myself: I could be wrong! I just got myself a film puller for circumstances like these. Hama has one, part number is 8025. It works very well, once you get the hang of it. Second, I need to know how I should re-align the film when reloading it the second time. The instructions for the class recommend disabling the autoloader. Is there a way to do that? Disabling autoloading is not possible, I think. The few times I tried double exposures I simply tried to lay in the film the same way twice, by eye. Results were not very accurate, and seem to vary a bit along the rol, if I recall correctly. That would mean film advance is a bit variable as well. If you do this with an MZ-50, I recommend you ask the lab not to cut your negatives: there might not be enough black space left between frames for them to reliably determine where to cut. I found out the hard way that labs never miss an opportunity to cut a negative in half :-( Hope this helps, -- Regards, Lucas
Re: Double Exposures using ZX-50
Thanks for your help Derek You could mark the sprocket hole that you want to start on the spindle on the left side of the camera. You won't get anything like perfect registration however.
