I can?t properly convey how gorgeous these digital files are. It?s not just
the amount of Megapixels that matter. The size of the imaging sensor comes
into play in the final quality of the photo. I?d rather have a 20 megapixel
medium format camera than a 30 megapixel 35mm based DSLR because the physical
sensor is much larger. The larger the sensor the higher the quality.

The only thing missing was the question of the image form and lens
aberrations. Of course new DSLRs compensate automatically, but still ...

I must admit that the close-up of the eyelashes with the MF digital equals
enlargements from 4x5 C41. It also betters mediocre LF lenses like the
Symmar convertibles from the 50s 60s. But contact /or scan it and there
is still no comparison, even with good better lenses. (No need to buy the
 top-end apo or such.)

Re: OT: Canon DSLR vs Rolleicord

2012-01-19 Thread Evan Hanson
I'm sure I'm in the minority but to my eye a well exposed optically
enlarged 35mm print still beats a print from even the latest crop of
DSLRs. To me the film simply looks more natural. The digital print
is assuredly cleaner but they lack a certain organic feel. To be
digital is good for shooting tons of shots cheaply. But when I went
to photograph my little niece last night, I took the ME Super.

But as I said, I'm sure I'm in the minority.

 Pros:
 - Very low noise,

 Cons:
 - Viewfinder frames what it wants and not what you want (due to 75% coverage
 and parallax),
 - Viewfinder gives you no info (neither exposure data nor focus point),
 - White dish effect on bright spots.

Main improvement suggested: get rid of that optical viewfinder and replace
it with a good EVF a la Panasonic.

to visit Quebec city. Quebec struck me as nice picturesque
european-like city; I don't recall seen so much snow together in my

I also had the chance to check out The Ice Hotel (which is, well, a
hotel made of ice); the ice-carving work done on the walls is
impressive, considering the hotel will eventually melt away and be
rebuilt next year. Note to myself: next time I should remember to

ice-white walls...)

That's it I'm Done with Digital (for now)

2009-02-11 Thread Evan Hanson
So last night the hard drive on my 2.5 year old mac died. Don't even
get me started on the fact that Apple knew the seagate drive used on my
mac was prone to failures. My last backup was on Jan 30. So I dig out
the CD's and guess what. 2 out of 10 of the CD's have failed. I was so
angry I was on the verge of cursing.

As if to taunt me my boxes of negatives were stored right next to the
CD's. I pulled out a box and looked at a sleeve, a softball game from
1982. Still looking good despite spending almost 30 years in a dark closet.

So I think I'm going to take a break from digital for a while and shoot
only film. I know the data loss can happen in any medium but after two
devastating losses in the past 4 years I need to get back to simpler times.

with an eye toward buying it next summer. Good service from the
company, and I found it to be an outstanding lens. Sharp and
contrasty from f/4, with no noticeable CA or purple fringing.

My K10D have me some AF trouble, mostly trying to shoot birds in
flight. If the bird ever slipped off the AF sensor, and the camera
only saw clear blue sky, it would send the lens to the close-focus
limit, and stay there (with the AF hexagon blinking). Releasing and
re-pressing the shutter wouldn't budge it, nor would switching between
AF.C and AF.S, nor would turning the camera off and back on. I had to
switch to MF, move the lens focus out, and then switch back to AF. I
was able to reproduce this problem on the DA*300, my Tamron 70-300,
and my DA 18-55. Now that I'm back home, and thinking of sending the
camera in for service, I can't reproduce it any more. :-/

Vanda in the Dry Valleys, Antarctica.
It had been so long that I had viewed some of these slides I am slowly
recollecting some of the places and people involved.
Damn sure is terrible to get so old and forgetful!

Film Lives

2008-02-29 Thread Evan Hanson
I recently had the chance to display some 6x6 slides to a group of
young people. Most of these kids were 15-16 years old and they were
literally blown away. They couldn't believe the detail and clarity
of these photos. It actually took me a few minutes to realize 1)
most of these kids had never seen a slide show before and 2) they've
grown up with digital. One of my daughter's friends, who said she
was interested in photography, couldn't believe these pictures were
made with an old Rolleicord. Needless to say the whole experience
put a smile on my increasingly retro-grouchy face.
