Why won't Adobe make versions of Lightroom Photoshop for Linux? 2. IIRC, there used to be a windoze emulator for Linux called WINE that was good enough that some earlier versions would run on it. Whatever happened to that? 3. Mac OS is based on some king of Linux/Unix under layer. Why isn't there some kind of Mac emulator for Linux that would allow you to run the Mac versions of Photoshop/Lightroom? PS: I'm pretty sure there's a Lightroom clone for Linux - can't remember the name of it off the top of my head right now - that works a bit better than Gimp does as a Photoshop clone. Over a period of years, rooms were redecorated, vintage cars were found, authentic food was prepared and friends came over to dress up. Here are some of the results. Not being satisfied with just the photos, I eventually put together a series of fake photo albums, a fictitious personal diary and souvenirs from imaginary trips. PESO - Solar Energy
After an extended absence due to competing interests (there is apparently only so much time in a day), here I am again. We usually cruise for several months to get away from the winter but this year we are in Sarasota. To keep from getting bored I bought David DuChemin's The Visual Toolbox, 50 lessons. I am done with the first 3 lessons, esp the 'set camera to manual'. This image is the second of two taken of the same view. Last year I started wondering whether a different view point would impact the effectiveness of a scene, much like wandering in a semi-circle looking for a better angle. I term it the 'mouse level'. In this case it turend a rather boring snap shot into something with a bit more impact. http://photo.psgv.ca/solar-energy/ Gerrit -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

I would have preferred not to have the hut in the view but cropping would have taken the sun out as well I think. And it wouldn't have owrked without it. Perhaps I will try a vertical orientation. RE: Carrying a camera on a long walk
I learned in Alaska to never change lenses when travelling. My K100D had sensor crap for months. I now exclusively use 18-250 on both our cameras for travels. The hassle of cleaning sensors in the evening is not worth it to me. On our recent trip to Indonesia etc we had lots of rain. Our lenses are not WR but a bit of caution in downpours meant that we still got photos, but no water inside. Unless it is actually pouring, I wouldn't agonize to much over WR. RE: Carrying a Camera on a Long Walk
I keep it simple, a fairly wide camera strap, a K5 and a Sigma 18-250 and a spare battery. Don't need all the other stuff when walking in cities or country side. Ocassionally a mono pod or tripod would be nice but not often. Camera is by my side or in my hands. Works for 10-15km walks about places like Bali, Mumbai, Cochin, Colombo, Lisbon etc. No vest, no camera bag, no backpack,no blowers, fans, propellers, sat phones, etc. Only tool is a lens cloth. I have tried so many brand name stuff - some unnecessarily expensive - ones you sling around your neck/shoulders and back - and all have caused varying degrees of discomfort and pain. So I bought myself a Photo Jacket with large pockets - Dubai $ 27, a Swiss Gear Pouch - French Super Market Carrefour $ 23 - that you wear round your waist and an ingenious India made Belt Clip - $ 10 - with a mating attachment for the Belt Clip - fits the tripod mount on the DSLR securely. Note: I have attached a safety loop to the tripod screw lug + a hand grip to the strap lugs on the Camera, in the rare chance that the tripod screw comes out loose. No neck strap on the camera. So far I have found the arrangement comfortable - no more neck or shoulder pain. Regards. Bipin. RE: How often do you back up your hard drive?
All photos and other important files go directly onto shares on my Windows Home Server which happily makes a duplicate copy right away.(on different drives) LR imports my photos directly to a share on the WHS, so it gets duplicated by the time that I start perusing and editing. Every morning our laptops get backed up automatically by WHS. I can restore any file I want to from there as well. I can full restore my laptops from this backup. The backdrop was white seamless paper, with red gelled strobes flashing at the back of it. There was a key light camera right, and a fill camera left. There is something about this shot that I really like even though there was no thought as to posing or anything beyond is the lighting correct when I took it. RE: making Gmail show own messages (was: Re: testing OT)
Outlook does the same, I find it difficult to say it is a bug or a feature though. OTOH in Outlook I can set an option to store the sent email with the replied to one, if it is in a folder other than Inbox. But that doesn't mean of course that the list received it, only that I saved my sent email. I never use the web interfaces for email, only Outlook. That way I get a consistent view and behaviour. But it doesn't appear to be there. Anyone any idea where I should be looking? Google thinks it's helping you: https://support.google.com/mail/answer/6588?topic=1564 this is a bug, not a feature, but arguing with Google is pointless, so just hack around it; if you create a filter to label mail from the list: Matches: list: (pdml_pdml.net.pdml.net) Do this: Skip Inbox, Apply label pdml all list messages, including yours, should appear in that label (aka mailbox); if for some reason that doesn't work, add a criterion to the filter to also label your messages sent to the list: matches: to: (pdml@pdml.net) If not, does anyone have any idea about manually importing old data into Thunderbird? I went from XP to Ubuntu - the auto import does not want to work and if I try to import the address book file and inbox folder manually, it stops T'bird working. If I had any wit at all, I would be at the end of it. without more info the question is too broad; it really depends on the form of the original email data; if it's on an IMAP server, simply point Thunderbird at that account (you can have multiple email accounts in TBird), and possibly copy it to your Gmail account or a local folder; if it's stored in local email files, it will help to know what format (mbox, maildir, some corruption thereof, something else?); with a handle on that you should be able to google up some resources, but the answer may be here: http://kb.mozillazine.org/Importing_and_exporting_your_mail -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions. -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

RE: Another shot from Italy: Wildflowers
It just seems to be like drinking out of a fire hose when we travel. We get 5-8 hours to 'see' a port or nearby city, usually with minimal ability to plan as guide books do not spend much time on port cities. We now avoid tour buses, taking small private tours, tuktuks, taxis whatever instead which helps a lot. Esp when you can find others who actually want to take photos instead of snaps with photo frames (iPads) through dirty bus windows at 60kmh. I probably do a lot more thinking about my photos as I take them than I realize. Thankfully my wife now has a K100D instead of a PS and she has a great eye for photo ops. I only threw out about 10% of our shots this trip, which still leaves 1 to sort out! gerrit -Original Message- From: PDML [mailto:pdml-boun...@pdml.net] On Behalf Of Mark Roberts Sent: Friday, July 26, 2013 8:04 PM To: Pentax-Discuss Mail List Subject: Re: Another shot from Italy: Wildflowers Gerrit Visser wrote: Very lovely photo. He also stated that he owned the copyright (therefore could give such permission). I have reason to believe that the title might be reasonably popular today, if again available. I guess my question is: Would his copyright have passed to his heirs? (Or what happens to one's copyright at death in the UK system)? Does his giving permission to reproduce mean that I could now republish it in the U.S. without treading on anyone's rights? RE: July Extra PUG - Open Gallery - is UP
I looked and looked, difficult to pick fav's but they are, in no particular order: Looking for a Mate, Bob Sullivan Morning Fog, Patrick Temmerman Soho Shadows, Ann Sanfedele Playing at the Edge of the Sky, Rick Womer I had a hand in Bruce's Test Shot one as a sand bag so it wouldn't seem appropriate to vote for it, otherwise I would have it on my list :-) Gerrit -Original Message- From: PDML [mailto:pdml-boun...@pdml.net] On Behalf Of Brian Walters Sent: Tuesday, July 23, 2013 4:00 AM To: Pentax-Discuss Mail List Subject: July Extra PUG - Open Gallery - is UP G'day all A great gallery with plenty of variety. A few favourites: Bob's 'Looking for a mate' - just fantastic Aahz's 'Endicott Sunset' - stunning colour Gerrit's 'Done Fishing' - simple but effective composition Bruce's 'Test Shot' - wonderful smile Ann's 'Soho Shadows' - the title says it all Boris' 'Ceramic Potters' - really effective shallow depth of field As usual, you'll find the gallery here: http://pug.komkon.org/ (you may need to refresh your browser if you see the previous Gallery there) Note: The automated submission process usually works well but it's not infallible. RE: PESO Filigree
Those are great. I found it very educational. My style is usually to take shots as we walk or get bussed past scenes while travelling. There is no time to really consider the scene, background or exposure and depth of field. I'll bring my camera next time to practice a bit myself. Thank you for the opportunity. RE: Ok, why does it do that?
I occasionally get that sorting in Outlook as well. It must be in the header somewhere. I will find a sample and see if I can see what the difference is. Gerrit -Original Message- From: PDML [mailto:pdml-boun...@pdml.net] On Behalf Of John Sessoms Sent: Sunday, July 21, 2013 12:59 PM To: Pentax-Discuss Mail List Subject: Ok, why does it do that? Now that I've got the list coming in directly to Thunderbird (via Yahoo), I've made a filter that puts all PDML into a PDML folder. Seems to be working great. In the PDML folder, I tried sorting by subject. Works ok, but ... It doesn't quite group all the same subject together in one place? Case in point - I see two replies to Larry's post Re: PESO Down by the seashore. Then I work my way down through several more groups of subjects replies and lo behold, there's Larry's original post PESO Down by the seashore and then several more replies. Why weren't they all together in one place? They were all already in the folder when I did the sort. Not a rant, just curious why it does that? Anyone know?
