That is good news indeed. I recently ran into 2 other Pentax shooters at Big
Cypress in Florida. First P sighting in 3+ years except for Bruce's Pentax.
Will see if Henrys in Toronto gets a decent display.

Just to prove that I'm not entirely Mister Grumpy *all* of the time.

I had to go out to Radio Shack to get a 100ft phone cord so I can take my
desk phone over to my other desk try to call tech support about another
completely different computer problem I haven't even mentioned here yet ...

Leaving that aside. On the way home, I was going past one of my local
independent camera stores, so I decided to stop in waste a few minutes
browsing DE-stressing.

About 5 steps into the store I spot it! It's a display case FULL of Ricoh
Pentax. NEW Ricoh Pentax. They've got their Pentax dealership back.
Hallelujah!

If I don't show up for a few days, you'll know where I am.

The display had a K500, K50, K-5II and a K-3, along with a DA50 f/1.8, FA
Limited 43 f/1.9; AF540FTZ, AF360FTZ, AF200FG DA50 macro and a bunch of
WG-4. Some other Pentax stuff to, but that's what I really noticed.

I think maybe battery grips for the K-5II and for the K-3.

Owner said the waterproof point 'n shoots were selling really well.

That does bring up some interesting questions:

1. Why won't Adobe make versions of Lightroom Photoshop for Linux?

2. IIRC, there used to be a windoze emulator for Linux called WINE that was
good enough that some earlier versions would run on it. Whatever happened to
that?

3. Mac OS is based on some king of Linux/Unix under layer. Why isn't there some
kind of Mac emulator for Linux that would allow you to run the Mac versions of
Photoshop/Lightroom?

PS: I'm pretty sure there's a Lightroom clone for Linux - can't remember the
name of it off the top of my head right now - that works a bit better than Gimp
does as a Photoshop clone.

Keep an updated anti-virus and software firewall (ZoneAlarm, for

I suspect quite a few PDMLers would appreciate this collection:
http://themetapicture.com/photographing-a-town-that-never-was/

This echoed in my mind with the photos of the vintage cars I've seen from
Paul.

There are more pictures in his Flickr:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/24796741@N05/page1/

Among those are a few interesting collections:
Mary Janes:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/24796741@N05/sets/72157604251470791/

And in this one, recreating the past collection, he an interesting
description (under more):
http://www.flickr.com/photos/24796741@N05/sets/72157604253082581/
I had been collecting 20th century memorabilia for a number of years
and felt I had to do something creative with it, instead of just having
it packed in boxes.
In the late 1980's I had the grand idea of recreating the 1950's through
a series of staged photographs.
Over a period of years, rooms were redecorated, vintage cars were found,
authentic food was prepared and friends came over to dress up.
Here are some of the results.
Not being satisfied with just the photos, I eventually put together a
series of fake photo albums, a fictitious personal diary and souvenirs
from imaginary trips. All of this was placed in trunk and
put aside so someone would eventually find it.
Is it unfair to have people think that what they found is real?
Hm. Good question.

Cheers,

Igor

Hi Team,

Just thought that I would mention that I managed to shoot 1578 shots on the
one battery last night, there was still some power left in the grip battery
and the body battery was unused.

That's shooting with the rear screen off, top LCD illumination off, single
point AF on the back button and JPG + RAW on a 64GB/95MB/s card. Not too
bad.

Cheers,

It should be safe for work even though the model is wearing no clothes.

Large gridded softbox as key, camera left, small soft box behind subject and

I don't think many places are getting this level of treatment. In areas
where the ground is bad, the government have red-zoned them and paid the
owners to move on. But this is one house among a good area. This one must
have been cheaper to fix than replace.

For Frank: this is a male model! ;-)

http://42graphy.org/misc/_IR09976.jpg
Rated G (for General Audience)

All colors are natural (i.e. I only sharpened and cropped the image).

Last month, we discovered a new (2-3 y.o.) winery in the vicinity (Peach
Creek Vineyards).
That's where I photographed the creature posted in the other PESO thread (I
am actually not quite sure what to call it).

Contrary to our scepticism, the winery makes very nice and interesting
wines. It has a nice setting with a pond on the side of the vineyard, and
some turkeys running around, who were very scared and running away from the
camera. Also, there was this rooster. He was very agressive, trying to
chase my daughter away. The biggest challenge in photographing him was to
catch him in focus and at a good angle, as he was running rather fast, and

PESO - Solar Energy

2014-03-11 Thread Gerrit Visser

After an extended absence due to competing interests (there is apparently
only so much time in a day), here I am again.

We  usually cruise for several months to get away from the winter but this
year we are in Sarasota. To keep from getting bored I bought David
DuChemin's The Visual Toolbox, 50 lessons. I am done with the first 3
lessons, esp the 'set camera to manual'.

This image is the second of two taken of the same view. Last year I started
wondering whether a different view point would impact the effectiveness of a
scene, much like wandering in a semi-circle looking for a better angle. I
term it the 'mouse level'. In this case it turend a rather boring snap shot
into something with a bit more impact.

RE: PESO - Solar Energy

2014-03-11 Thread Gerrit Visser
Thanks Bruce, I have a growing collection of mouse level shots, will have to
build a GESO soon.

If I had been alone, yes on the closer :-) The lens was already at 18mm. I
would have preferred not to have the hut in the view but cropping would have
taken the sun out as well I think. And it wouldn't have owrked without it.
Perhaps I will try a vertical orientation.

Actually if it had been just Pat and myself I could have as well but the
people we were with don't do photos, at all.

I know a guy who used to work at Telecom. He once told me about a

The trouble is, they'd had a software update a couple of years previously
that had a bug which caused it to write corrupt data to the backup. So they
had to re-enter everything from paper records.

quite recently i took a retainer for improving a website and said one of

i soon got word from the previous contractor that he didn't think the

Been there, done that. Five or six times already.

It does NOT work.

For some reason Windows 7 has decided that 1 GB of system RAM must be
devoted to the video adapter, which has its own 128 MB DDR2 built in.

I have a feeling at this point that if there is any solution it's likely to
involve FDISK.

RE: Carrying a camera on a long walk

2013-08-09 Thread Gerrit Visser
I learned in Alaska to never change lenses when travelling. My K100D had
sensor crap for months. I now exclusively use 18-250 on both our cameras for
travels. The hassle of cleaning sensors in the evening is not worth it to
me.

On our recent trip to Indonesia etc we had lots of rain. Our lenses are not
WR but a bit of caution in downpours meant that we still got photos, but no
water inside. Unless it is actually pouring, I wouldn't agonize to much over
WR.

Absolutely! I used it in a light rain a few days earlier. But the camera
is *NOT* sealed while you're changing lenses... (Perhaps I was being a bit
overcautious, but I'm not always sure-fingered and this was a rental
camera/lens.)

Side note: that light rain with the 16-50 taught me another reason why
really it's a Good Idea to use a lens hood. Lens spots in those pics are
fortunately not t visible (and lend a bit of atmosphere to some).

I keep it simple, a fairly wide camera strap, a K5 and a Sigma 18-250 and a
spare battery. Don't need all the other stuff when walking in cities or
country side. Ocassionally a mono pod or tripod would be nice but not often.
Camera is by my side or in my hands. Works for 10-15km walks about places
like Bali, Mumbai, Cochin, Colombo, Lisbon etc.

No vest, no camera bag, no backpack,no blowers, fans, propellers, sat
phones, etc. Only tool is a lens cloth.

As one gets older camera sling bags, back packs or even the neck strap
become a pain in the neck - literally.
I have tried so many brand name stuff - some unnecessarily expensive - ones
you sling around your neck/shoulders and back - and all have caused varying
degrees of discomfort and pain.
So I bought myself a Photo Jacket with large pockets - Dubai $ 27, a Swiss
Gear Pouch - French Super Market Carrefour $ 23 - that you wear round your
waist and an ingenious India made Belt Clip - $ 10 - with a mating
attachment for the Belt Clip - fits the tripod mount on the DSLR securely.
Note: I have attached a safety loop to the tripod screw lug + a hand grip to
the strap lugs on the Camera, in the rare chance that the tripod screw comes
out loose. No neck strap on the camera.
So far I have found the arrangement comfortable - no more neck or shoulder
pain.
Regards.

RE: How often do you back up your hard drive?

2013-08-08 Thread Gerrit Visser
All photos and other important files go directly onto shares on my Windows
Home Server which happily makes a duplicate copy right away.(on different
drives)

LR imports my photos directly to a share on the WHS, so it gets duplicated
by the time that I start perusing and editing.

Every morning our laptops get backed up automatically by WHS. I can restore
any file I want to from there as well. I can full restore my laptops from
this backup.

brand - at least in terms of versatility, diversity and user-friendly useful
features. Also, it seems that their recent lenses are just as good optically
as anything else out there, so Sigma gets my thumbs up.

You may wish to note that these shots are essentially uncropped; I've

I took a few minutes here to play with the Upright/Perspective Tool and the

I was taking a look at this

might put new optics in the junk 28-80 Pentax lens I got (just for the

Gerrit: in the meantime you can perspective-straighten your shots manually
in Lr4. In the Develop module, under Lens Corrections choose the Manual tab.
Enable Constrain Crop. Then tweak the Transform:
Vertical slider to suit. The other sliders may be required for other types
of distortion. You can fix shots from unrecognized lenses or home-made
optics, like that one you bought from Tichy. ;-)

RE: GESO - Monochrome Summer

It was more to get an impression of how film vs. digital BW looks to the
end user/viewer. Is the 'feeling' you get looking at the 2 images the same
or somehow different because it is film?
If you were to crop them to same view then you could use those to get
opinions.

Now, there's another interesting little project... You might take more or
less the same shots with this lens on a film and digital, or alternatively
use a 24 mm (which I have) on digital, to get more or less the same field of
view. I'm not sure I could get exactly the same perspective from two shots
in a row, though. Perhaps if using a tripod, but I'd probably manage to
change the setup slightly even then :-/

I was just setting up the lights and setting the exposure. Sophia
was just sitting on her stool, biding her time while I futzed with
the camera and took test shots to set the exposure.
The backdrop was white seamless paper, with red gelled strobes
flashing at the back of it. There was a key light camera right, and a
 fill camera left.

There is something about this shot that I really like even though
there was no thought as to posing or anything beyond is the lighting
 correct when I took it.

It took a fair bit of processing to bring the color out of the
background in lightroom. If I brought the exposure up properly for
Sophia, then the red totally washed out.

Outlook does the same, I find it difficult to say it is a bug or a feature
though. OTOH in Outlook I can set an option to store the sent email with the
replied to one, if it is in a folder other than Inbox. But that doesn't mean
of course that the list received it, only that I saved my sent email.
I never use the web interfaces for email, only Outlook. That way I get a
consistent view and behaviour.

Google thinks it's helping you:

https://support.google.com/mail/answer/6588?topic=1564

this is a bug, not a feature, but arguing with Google is pointless, so just
hack around it; if you create a filter to label mail from the list:

Matches: list: (pdml_pdml.net.pdml.net) Do this: Skip Inbox, Apply label
pdml

all list messages, including yours, should appear in that label (aka
mailbox); if for some reason that doesn't work, add a criterion to the
filter to also label your messages sent to the list:

matches: to: (pdml@pdml.net)

If not, does anyone have any idea about manually importing old data
into Thunderbird? I went from XP to Ubuntu - the auto import does not
want to work and if I try to import the address book file and inbox
folder manually, it stops T'bird working. If I had any wit at all, I
would be at the end of it.

without more info the question is too broad; it really depends on the form
of the original email data; if it's on an IMAP server, simply point
Thunderbird at that account (you can have multiple email accounts in TBird),
and possibly copy it to your Gmail account or a local folder; if it's stored
in local email files, it will help to know what format (mbox, maildir, some
corruption thereof, something else?); with a handle on that you should be
able to google up some resources, but the answer may be here:

I'll tell you about it in another post but I've been gone due to computer
woes. Still don't have one but I can now do the odd photo at work (if I
don't get caught). Was at a messenger race on the weekend and
messenger/rapper Sunny D made a conspicuous entrance as she often does:

 http://mondociclismo.blogspot.ca/2013/07/here-comes-sunny-d.html?m=1

I may have over-sharpened. Loaded GIMP on my office computer and my monitors
are horrendous so it was hard to tell how much sharpening I applied. Let me
know what you think.

Hope you enjoy. Comments always welcome.

not being received by other members on the mailing list. On the other hand,
if I post using the Apple Mail client from godfreydigio...@me.com or

Any clue as to why this might be happening?

It would have been great except the first year they used no primer. The
vehicle recycled itself in less than 5 years from new. My dad's was 1 year

OTOH it had a larger carrying capacity than my father-in-laws full size Chev

The little station wagon was a pretty good car; not subject to the rear end
collision broken filler neck problem.

The only real problem I had with mine was the automatic transmission was the
same unit Ford used for their larger vehicles it sucked a lot of power out
of the vehicle.

If it had been a stick shift, I might still have it running today.

A couple of details of one of my personal favorites: a rose and white 1956

typography on the Caribbean badging. Packard had style. (The Mercedes 540Kk,

The older a machine is, the less memory is likely to have been

All true, and I wrote something about that but decided to delete it.
From my POV, that's still something wrong, even if semi-expected under

Shot this several year ago with an LX w/20mm A* lens. Thistles weren't there
at that time, but I worked my way through near shoulder high dry grass and
shot from near the front corner of the house.
I was hoping to get an angle through the front arched iron gate, but found
it completely obscured by very thick undergrowth.

Had a critical case of cabin fever and a serious hankerin' to shoot
something. It's been too hot this summer to get far from the A/C. Was 111 F
recently...but it's dry heat..like that makes all the difference.  Right!

Shot this today, it isn't yet 100 F, but will make it this PM.

Comments?

to carry around. Super light on the monopod, so everyone who was asked
to was able to hold it up.

Damn you, I think you just cost me $25 or $50. My softboxes are a pita to
set up. The one downside would be adjusting the light inside.

They look like they might give a more directional light than a conventional

I'm afraid that my light modifier addiction makes my lens buying addiction
seem tame.

The wildflowers were amazing throughout the mountains during our trip.
This scene inspired me to say I'm gonna break all the rules and shoot
*into* the sun. (I'm such a rebel...) There was one little flare spot that
was easily touched up in Lightroom (except for the stitched pano, all the
shots I've shown from Italy have been Lightroom-processed-only

RE: Another shot from Italy: Wildflowers

2013-07-26 Thread Gerrit Visser
It just seems to be like drinking out of a fire hose when we travel. We get
5-8 hours to 'see' a port or nearby city, usually with minimal ability to
plan as guide books do not spend much time on port cities. We now avoid tour
buses, taking small private tours, tuktuks, taxis whatever instead which
helps a lot. Esp when you can find others who actually want to take photos
instead of snaps with photo frames (iPads) through dirty bus windows at
60kmh.

I probably do a lot more thinking about my photos as I take them than I
realize. Thankfully my wife now has a K100D instead of a PS and she has a
great eye for photo ops.
I only threw out about 10% of our shots this trip, which still leaves 1
to sort out!

I wouldn't know!

It's mostly see, compose, grab one or two shots and then try to catch up
for me. Knowing your gear and having a range of settings ready to use is
very helpful. Also, having plenty of ideas in mind, both for photos and for
problem-solving strategies, is essential for travel photography. You only
get a moment for a shot.

Just a short follow-up. It appears that what I am asking about is called
orphan works and UK law recently changed regarding them:
http://www.economist.com/blogs/babbage/2013/05/orphan-works

We are 33 years out from the original publishing date (no other editions
were printed and it was never even published in paperback). I know who the
original publishing house was, but there would be no reason to give them a
heads-up on what I'd like to do... they can't possibly have publishing
rights that extend this far out (can they?)

Interesting.

I have an interesting situation that I just bumped across. I've found
a long out-of-print title (published in 1980) by a now deceased author

(photo/ copy) his book if anyone found a copy. He also stated that
he owned the copyright (therefore could give such permission). I have
reason to believe that the title might be reasonably popular today, if
 again available.

I guess my question is: Would his copyright have passed to his heirs?
(Or what happens to one's copyright at death in the UK system)? Does
his giving permission to reproduce mean that I could now republish it
in the U.S. without treading on anyone's rights? Or if someone
maintains rights, how might I go about finding out who and procuring
 them?

 Thanks for any insights.

This is in Milan. I forget what the magnificent building used to be used for
but now it's a high end shopping area (the store in the center is Prada).
When I entered the place I thought this is like being inside an HDR photo!
So I thought WTF, let's do HDR. I deliberately *didn't* use the

I learned on cruises that you always wait 15-30 minutes after the sun goes
under the horizon before walking away. Most people would show up for 'that
moment' and miss the real show. Only actual photographers would remain that
long (and there were never many of those people)

This weekend was my sister's 30 year high school reunion. She and a couple
of friends rented a house down by the yacht harbor for a couple of days.
Last night, I was down there noticed that it was a nice sunset and walked
across the street so I could get some photos of the yacht harbor without
telephone wires in the frame. I took a variety of shots, walked back to the
house and noticed that just as I got back to the house, the colors were
peaking. I went back down to the harbor, but by the time I got there, the
best of the color had faded.

In the future, when I'm photographing a sunset, I'll try to remember to wait
until after I see the color fading before I give up and quit shooting.

This one was from after I went back down, I had to shoot a lot tighter so
that I wouldn't get the ugly bits of the sky in the frame.

I did bracket my shots, and should probably try HDR on some of them.

OK. Now you are just showing off.

Well done!

Thanks, Annsan! Most HDR photos that I like are - almost of necessity
 - done by people who hate HDR, so that must explain why mine came out
OK ;-) That and the fact that the place really did look kind of unreal
 and HDR-ish in real life.

RE: PESO Filigree

2013-07-22 Thread Gerrit Visser
Those are great.

I found it very educational. My style is usually to take shots as we walk or
get bussed past scenes while travelling. There is no time to really consider
the scene, background or exposure and depth of field.
I'll bring my camera next time to practice a bit myself.

Thank you for the opportunity.

I occasionally get that sorting in Outlook as well. It must be in the header
somewhere. I will find a sample and see if I can see what the difference is.

Subject: Ok, why does it do that?

Now that I've got the list coming in directly to Thunderbird (via Yahoo),
I've made a filter that puts all PDML into a PDML folder. Seems to be
working great.

In the PDML folder, I tried sorting by subject. Works ok, but ...

It doesn't quite group all the same subject together in one place?

Case in point - I see two replies to Larry's post Re: PESO Down by the
seashore.

Then I work my way down through several more groups of subjects replies
and lo behold, there's Larry's original post PESO Down by the seashore
and then several more replies. Why weren't they all together in one place?
They were all already in the folder when I did the sort.

Not a rant, just curious why it does that? Anyone know?

Thunderbird for Dummies version if you will.
