I did a group picture of a family I have known for about 30 years last

Roy is one of the people who more or less mentored me into making quality
 pictures.
We would go out and shoot the same locations with each other, sometimes
shooting every day for weeks on end, then dissapearing into the darkroom
for
several hours and later meeting for coffee and comparing contact sheets
and
 work prints.
He got me involved in bothe medium format and large format cameras, and in
fact, my BJ view camera came from him, as did the 4x5 enlarger I had been
using up until I shut my darkroom down three years ago.

Quickie grayscale conversion then some levels adjusting was done.

I have had my ME-II winder for about 20 years on my ME Super, and
ergonomically, I don't think any camera fits better in my hand. The winder
makes the ME Super easy and comfortable to hold. The only downside is that
while the ME Super is probably the quietest Pentax camera (at least in terms
of shutter) ever made, the ME-II winder will wake the dead. However, even
with the winder attached and turned on, if you need stealth, just pressing
the shutter release on the ME Super body (as the body shutter release stays
on manual even if winder is on). The switches for the winder are up by the
trigger button, so it is easy to turn on and off. I still use the ME Super
just because if fits so well in my hand with the winder.

I have not had any problems with the ME-II winder and would highly
recommend it.

 Derek

The ME-II winder works very well with The ME Super and almost all other
M bodies designed for a winder.
Also work well with the Super A/Program.
It gives a good feel and grip to the camera.
It is however quite loud, sounds just like you'd expect an older winder
to
  sound.
The nice thing though is that you can turn it off and use the camera
  manually,
just using the winder for a grip and to add some weight to the camera.
I still own 2 of these but don't use them much anymore, when I need
auto-
wind I grab the ZX-5n or one of the PZ bodies.

The favorite pentax poll generated lots of good stuff. Got me to
 thinking about my first pentax.

Mine was a P 30t, but came as a gift, so I don't know if it counts.
The first one of my own choosing was a spotmatic, a real user off
ebay, and it came with a 20 pound sack full of lenses-- the 28(3.5),
 50(1.4), 105(2.8), 135(3.5) and 200(4)super taks. The fifty was a
user too, but the others were near mint, with cases. Since then,
I've been a fan (as described by Bob Blakely) of pentax equipment.
I've owned nearly every body, and as many lenses as a poor amateur
 can afford.

If Pentax were to produce one last new film cameras, what would you want
it to be?

My choice would be something like the LX but cut cost by eliminating the
removable finder and use a different mirror bumper system that doesn't need
regular maintenance (sticky mirror). Add the other modes, A interface,
and a spot meter we're set. Probably a $500 body. But built to last a
lifetime.

Personally, the AF cameras of Pentax haven't excited me. They're either
too plasticky (ZX/MZ) or too difficult to hold (PZ/Z). But I've not having
held the MZ-S yet. Maybe a scaled-down, affordable MZ-S would be useful as
well.

I'll post these again Friday, but here's the early notice:

Pentax SF1n, beautiful condition. I can't tell this one from new.
Perfect working condition -- definitely a low-mileage body. Includes
eyecup cover, hot shoe cover, cable release cover, along with
everready case, strap and extra AA battery grip. Also includes
 original manual. Choice of SMC-F 50mm f/1.7 lens or SMC-F 28-80 zoom
(the SMC one, not the Pentax F/Takumar F version), or both. I'll
 include a battery as well.

 Price: $150 body alone, $180 with 50mm lens, $200 with 28-80, or $225
 with both lenses.

Also for sale, a very pretty Voigtlander Perkeo I folder 120 camera,
with the more desireable Color Skopar 80mm f/3.5 lens (a
four-element, highly regarded design). I had this camera CLA'd last
year. This model has no rangefinder or meter. Operating very well and
takes beautiful images -- folds down into a size that's barely taller
than a Kodak Retina. Includes most of the everready case (only
missing the snap flap on the rear that holds it closed. But you may
find it more pocketable without the case and with a strap that screws
 into the tripod socket.

 Price: $75.

 Hi Lewis,

This has been thoroughly covered many times before on this list, but
since I don't know what reference you are using, in looking at my
Spotmatic F factory-issued owner's manual, it says, on page 10, titled
Mercury Batteries -- For replacement, use Mallory PX-625 or Everady

While I cannot speak about any EPX batteries, from lack of personal
experience, the various alkaline batteries recommended earlier in this

graywolf offered, on the US 1 or California SR 1 discussion
(describing the coastal route from Los Angeles to San Jose):

US 101, I believe. But then I have only been in California twice,
  so could be mistaken.

Not the same. California SR 1 (also known as Pacific Coast Highway
for the section just north of L.A.) hugs the coast. For a small part
of the route between L.A. and San Francisco SR 1 is coincident with
US 101, but for much of the way 101 is one or two valleys inland,
so there isn't a view of the Pacific ocean. Not as far inland as
Interstate 5 (the shortest route between L.A. S.J., mind you).
[Yes, the US has three distinct road numbering schemes. The main
transport routes, or Interstates - limited-access highways rather
like the Motorways or Autobahns; the national US highway system
for major roads, and the state numbering system for anything else]

I'd definitely recommend taking more than a day for the scenic route.
You start off with Malibu (which has wonderful beaches; a great way
to start the day is breakfast at one of the beach-front restaurants).
Then on past the channel islands and Santa Barbara.

At this point you lose sight of the ocean for a while, until you
 get to Grover City and San Luis Obispo.  Fill your fuel tank here;
there's only one place to fill up your car in Big Sur, and prices
are routinely 50% higher than in the rest of central California.
Then on to Morro Beach - another nice place for beachfront shots.

A little further north is Cambria. This bills itself as an artist's
community, and also has some excellent arts and crafts stores for
finding nice hand-made souvenirs. Then comes San Simeon - a great
example of how American press barons spend their money. It's worth
taking at least one of the many different tours - you can probably
find one that shows you the parts you want to see, and skips over
the parts that interest you less.

Also around here, at the right time of year, you can see elephant
seals covering the beaches. Don't get too close.

Then on through Big Sur itself. A hundred miles of almost unspoilt
coastline, with some of the most picturesque seafront in the world.
With 2500' mountains just a few miles from the ocean, sweeping sandy
beaches, and geologically recent upheavals (courtesy of the San
Andreas and other earthquake faults) leaving interesting-shaped
 boulders everywhere, it's a (landscape) photographer's dream.

At the north end of this wonderful stretch you come to the Monterey
peninsula and Carmel - another good spot for the arts. And also a
very good spot for expensive designer outlets - Monterey is home to
the Pebble Beach golf course (and Carmel, of course, is the community
where Clint Eastwood served as mayor for a while). It's definitely
worth taking the famed 17-mile drive round the pebble beach and other
golf courses; these private roads are the only way to get to some of
 the best viewpoints.

Then, just up the coast, is Santa Cruz. Very much a university town
(lots of cheap restaurants, music venues, etc.), and the renowned
beach boardwalk (not as good as Atlantic City, but worth a visit).

Then it's either turn inland and head to San Jose, or carry on up
the coast to Half Moon Bay, and on to San Francisco.

Busy this weekend, so posting a day early
No takers the last time so feel free to make me an offer

 For Sale:
Excellent condition SMC-M* 300mm f4 lens. 77mm filter size. Built in
 retractable lens hood. Original caps.
A real bargain at US$300 or CDN$400 plus shipping (probably around $15-ish
 with insurance)
When I say excellent condition, I mean excellent. Really.

LX. $300 or CDN$400 plus shipping (see above)
It has the FA-1 finder and I replaced the SB21 screen with a brighter SE60
(bought from Peter of Sunny Brighton). It's definitely been used. It has a
fair amount of scuffs and scratches and the leatherette is lifting
slightly
in a couple of places but it's not actually showing any brassing. A couple
of bright spots on the top edges of the prism. Serial number is 52
something and film speed goes to 3200. I also have a brand new user manual
for it. Speeds were checked about a year ago and it had sticky-mirror
fixed
with a service about three years ago and it's been fine ever since.

 hi guys,

just posting a link to a gallery of kid portraits that I shot yesterday
for
those who asked about portraits and the *istD. The lighting was ideal for
this shoot and the results were much, much better than the couple that I
 posted the other day.

This little girl is a very unusual looking child, and it was hard to make
her look cute. PLUS, boy does she ever have an attitude, she DID NOT
want
to be photographed and is very intense and totally precocious! She is two
years old and was telling her mum to Get Lost! So initially, I had to
shoot without flash using a 200mm lens to keep a safe distance from her
to
capture her candidly. Toward the end, she relaxed a little and I
distracted
her by bribing her with lollies and picking some lillies out of the water
for her to play with, so she became a little easier to work with.

Her mum is a good friend of mine who I have shot many times in the past
(whilst she was pregnant and when the little girl was a newborn), but this
time she insisted on paying me properly and on me treating her as I
would
a true client as she felt sick of getting freebies from me all the time.
It was really nice to be appreciated by a friend!

So, she is over the moon with the results, and I was quite happy too, I
can
definitely see my work with the *ist D improving as I get to know it
 better...

Still, I think there is a bit too much flash on some of those shots toward
the end - still learning about flash in a major way, so I expect that this
 will improve over time...

 Here's the link:

 http://www.tanyamayer.com/avagallery/index.html

 I love this one...

 http://www.tanyamayer.com/avagallery/pages/IMGP1398.html

Does anyone have any suggestions as to how I may soften the effect of
the
flash? I do have a diffuser over it, but I'm not getting hotspots
anyways,
which is a great thing. I am just wanting to soften so that it doesn't
appear to dominate the entire picture, such as in this shot:

 http://www.tanyamayer.com/avagallery/pages/IMGP1386.html

Obviously, I can't bounce it when I am shooting on location such as these.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Ok, so I am off to Brisbane again in the morning, so may be a bit quiet
until Monday - will check my emails in my motel tomorrow night though, so
don't go talking behind my back, ok?!? lol...

 Have a great weekend all!

 tan.

 Deep admiration:

Veteran Radio 4 broadcaster Alistair Cooke is retiring
after 58 years at the helm of his show Letter From America.

The 95-year-old joined the BBC in 1934 as a film critic
before starting up US current affairs and historical
programme Letter From America in 1946.

The show is the world's longest-running speech radio programme.

Cooke, who was absent from the show last week due to
illness, will not record any new shows but Radio 4 will air
  archive shows for several weeks.

The BBC said Cooke had decided to sign off following advice from
doctors Cooke said: I can no longer continue my Letter From America.

Throughout 58 years I have had much enjoyment in doing these talks
and hope that some of it has passed over to the listeners,
to all of whom I now say thank you for your loyalty and goodbye. ...

I'm surprised not to see KX or K1000 on this list. K1000 is, for all
practical purposes, a Spot F with a K mount (at least until they started
making them out of cardboard spray-painted chrome color).

I don't hear much about the KX or KM. Perhaps they are as (un)reliable
as the K2 by now and of course they are big and heavy for Pentaxes.

The KM is identical to the K1000 electrically and mechanically, except
for the addition of a self-timer and depth-of-field preview. Actually,
the KM came first and Pentax stripped off the timer and DOF preview to
 create the K1000.

The KX is identical to the K1000 mechanically except for the addition of
DOF preview and self-timer, as in the KM, plus mirror lock-up. The KX
has different electronics: A silicon photodiode meter instead of the CdS
 cell meter of the KM/K1000.

The meter of the KX is slightly more likely to fail, in my experience,
than that of the KM/K1000. Mechanically they're all identical in terms
 of reliability.

From what I know of the ElectroSpotmatic and K2-DMD, I'd agree that
they are better suited to collectors than photographers due to
 reliability issues.

I have had three K2s and found them pretty much indestructible I still
have two of them). Nary a mechanical or electronic problem. The shutter
on the K2 is great: Much more robust than the latest equipment. Of
course that's because the new stuff goes to 1/2000, 1/4000 or 1/8000
second and so everything has to be much lighter and thus more delicate.
I think the shutter on the K2 could lop your finger off!

I'm very fond of this lens, but I have to sell it to fund the purchase
of other equipment I need. It's a manual aperture lens, which means you
have to stop down to meter, but I've never found that to be much of an
inconvenience I shot with it on the *ist D last weekend and had a great
time. It has a built in hood and is cosmetically excellent. The glass
looks great to my eye. No fungus, no flaws, clean inside and out. I've
had a great time shooting with it, and find it to be very sharp with
excellent color and contrast -- even when used at 800mm with the A2X-S
converter. The first $300 takes it. If it doesn't sell by Thursday, it
goes on ebay. A few examples of shots I've taken with this lens follow.
(All but the first and last were in combination with the A 2X-S
converter. The last was with the *ist D, so the angle of view is that
of a 600mm lens on a 35mm film camera.) Big glass at a budget price.
Shipping and insurance is ten bucks in the US, actual cost elsewhere.

Looking at BH it's about US$100 for the 5P cord the off-camera-adapter F

FS: PZ-1p, purchased last year from KEH in EX+ condition. I'm
offering it together with the original instruction manual, a full
case and a bottom half of a case, and the grip strap (grip strap in
EX condition -- just the lettering PENTAX is slightly worn). Kit
will ship with a couple of new 2CR5 batteries. Camera works
beautifully, has all its covers, and is in beautiful condition.

Have the SFXn with ERC, and the back accomodates the data back on the
camera. With the front cover removed, this setup makes a very comfortable
handfull.

Pentax still makes NRCs (Never Ready Cases) for the MZ-series, but I'm not
sure about the *ist. As Frank points out, I imagine leaving room to view
the screen and dials on the back could be tricky. The problem with NRCs
for most modern cameras isn't their unusual shapes, though... it's the
fact that today's plastic bodies need more padding than the older metal
bodies. It's tough plastic, but not that tough.

Unfortunately Pentax seem to have given up making close fitting ERCs.
Too
  many combinations now I suppose.

If you are looking for A1 prime lenses, suggest starting with 50mm f1:1.2 M
or A. Price was always a deterent for me, bought an LX outfit on eBay, and
was surprised to see the lens in the bag when the kit arrived(a bonus). It
certainly is worth the price.

I use an MX's and LX's, and a range of K-mount lenses from 18.mm to
 200mm.
 Which 50/1.4 do you have?

I'm not crazy about the K35/2.0 ... oh, it's a fine optic when stopped
down a bit, and i even like it wide open, but it's a little large for my
taste. Much prefer the smaller size of the K35/3.5. If you can find
one, the K30/2.8 is a great compromise between size and weight and
aperture, and, IMO, a better lens all around than the K35/2.0 ... since
I've gotten the 30mm I rarely use the 28 or either of the 35's.

The K24/2.8 is another fine lens, although methinks it's a bit wide for
good street photography, but I guess that depends on your definition of
the practice and your shooting style.

I've had numerous 85mm lenses and settled on the K85/1.8 for its size,
sharpness, speed, and weight. I loved the M85/2.0, and I'd have it yet
had not a lady friend talked me out of it ... damn!
However, as much as I liked the lens (it's nice and small and more than
adequate in sharpness) the K85/1.8 was the lens I almost always reached
 for.

If you get an 85mm, you might want to make the jump to the K120/2.8.
It's a very nice lens, yes siree!, and while it has a similar optical
formula to the K105/2.8 (which I've loved since the 1960's version in
Super Takumar screw mount format), I think the bokeh is a little better,
perhaps because of the longer focal length.

A good all-around kit for street photography might be the 30mm, 50mm,
85mm, and the 120mm. Those are ny choices, anyway.

Well, welcome to the list ... have phun.

web and many of them are compilations of comments from this list so I
figured I'd go right to the source and see what was going on.

Just started shooting with the MX again after a year of shooting
exclusively with a Rolleicord V and wanted to get a coupla lenses to
compliment the 50/1.4. Probably something shorter and something
longer with the same build quality and a similiar look and feel to
photos (good bokeh, mostly shooting at or near wide open). Something
that goes well with Tri-X for handheld, available light, street and
travel photography. Maybe the 24/2.8 and one of the 85's or 100's.
Three seems like the perfect number. Can bring them all without much
overlap. Though the K 35/2 is also appealing...

There are, however, two versions of the K50/1.2 and on the later version
the lens information on the front ring has been been changed to match
the style of the M lenses. The old one had SMC PENTAX 1:1.2/50 while
the newer one has smc PENTAX 1:1.2 50mm in a different typeface. So it
looks like an M lens but it is just the old K lens in drag.

Re: Vivitar Lens

2004-01-10 Thread Hal Sandra Davis
Speaking of Vivitar Series 1 lenses, I have a 70-210mm f3.5 with fungus on
the front group. I sent it to an outfit in Colorado that advertises lens
repair in Shutterbug. They quoted $75 for the front group, and $125 for
cleaning the entire barrel(where they found more) and recoating. Three
questions; has anyone had this successfully done, is the price
reasonable(seems to be at about used lens price), and can the lens be as
good as new after the rehab(this was a super VS1, hand picked from several).

 Hey gang,

Putting together a bag for my ist D (this may be interesting to
those with film vivitar lenses), and was trying out various lenses.
Trying to put on my Vivitar Series 1 90-180mm Flat Field, I found the
flange at the back of the lens to be too long.

I know someone had cut this flange down, but don't remember who, and
don't remember their description/web page on doing it. Can anyone give
 me a hand here?

Gentrification and 'urban renewal' are something that I have been working
with other local people to try and control in my suburb. Many fine old
'Queenslander' houses have been knocked down and either modern rubbish or
'Tuscan' monstrosities have taken their place. Worse than the loss of
character is the loss of affordable housing and diversity in the suburb,
which I moved to because of it's character.
In order to make the point, another photographer and I have recorded over
300 images of places under threat or (now) gone. Unfortunately, property
prices here have increased by 300% in the last ten years, so it's hard to
convince people not to realise their property's value.

I have recorded the changes in my local area for the better part of
three
decades now, and the number of beautiful buildings and Victorian and

scandal. The hideous monstrosities that have replaced them is making the
