Re: anybody know about the Sigma 24mm f/2.8 1:4 Wide Angle Macro Lens
Hi Larry, I've got one. Loved it on film, still like it a lot on a K10. I generally prefer to use Pentax lenses, but I make an exception for this one. It's major drawback is that it's prione to flare. I got it in 2004 for €70,- in well-used condition. Focussing feel is peculiar: very loose, and gritty. It feels like it can get stuck any minute, but it hasn't for the last five years, so I'm not complaining. Regards, Lucas OK, so she's the art director, which makes a lot of difference - you have to do as she says. But given her target market I still don't think an indoor chair outdoors is really going to appeal very much to them. Anway, I'd say you need more sun, more light and warmth. Most of the pictures feel rather cool to me, even those shot in direct sunlight. I am almost the baby-boomer age, and I have friends relatives in that age group, and I find it hard to imagine these pictures selling anything to them. Picture number 2, for example, has the chair in bright sun, but the building is in shadow and the cool of that predominates. The composition needs to be much tighter, with better use of the building, and to be more effective the whole thing needs to be in the sun, probably the late evening sun with naturally saturated colours. Picture 3 is kind of getting there, but still the cool of the background shadows kills it. Have a look at other publications that are aiming at the same audience and see what techniques they use. In particular it's worth remembering Terence Donovan's (or possibly David Bailey's) well-worn phrase No client ever complained about a picture being too effing warm. A lot of subject matter does not allow such a studied approach to the viewfinder. Ditto, with the added caveat that I find a restricted view of the finder mildly uncomfortable and an active impediment to shooting. If I'm planning to shoot trult static subject matter, I'm not likely to be shooting a compact 35mm SLR but rather my 645 or 4x5, neither of which are lacking in eye relief (Especially not the latter which has effectively unlimited relief). It is the slower workflow that appeals to me, as well as the very beautiful look of medium-format images. The Pentax 645 is a auto-exposure, auto winder camera. There is no need for the workflow to be slower than for a similar specified 135 camera. For instance, is film readily available? And can you have it developed I buy it at ebay. More than enough sellers with all kinds of film. or do you have to do it yourself (I'm considering both BW and colour)? I can have it processed by a photo-dealer or, through another, by the Kodak lab. I develop black and white myself. The darkroom for printing keeps rising on the to-do list. We're halfway though the kithchen. As soon as we have a new roof, I can start building it. If I have to do it myself, the idea is probably a bust; I don't have the space to set up anything. I'd appreciate feedback on the workflow in practice for medium format. Developing isn't a problem: you need a light-tight zippered bag with openings for your hands (I'm quite sure the english language has a word for it. Sadly I don't know it ;-), a daylight developing tank (patterson is the brand to have, I think), and chemicals with containers. Spool the film on the reel of the tank in the zippered bag, close it, and the rest can be done in daylight... Small, light and quite capable. Probably way under 100,- at the moment, though I have not been following prices recently. If you get a MZ-5, make sure it's the -n version. It adds some worthwhile features. If you don't like your camera to focus for you, but like modern exposure modes a super A (or 645 ;-) would be a good choice. Anyway, here's the question: do you primarily shoot PEFs or DNGs since Lightroom does PEFs? Any preferences or does it even matter. This shot is a DNG. I have the K10D set to capture in PEF format. When I import to Lightroom, I have it convert to DNG on the fly directly from card to computer hard drive, and make a backup copy of the PEFs on a RAW archive drive. (With *ist D and *ist DS files, the DNGs would be about 40% smaller than the native camera PEFs, but on the K10D the PEFs are losslessly compressed so they end up about the same size.) The resulting DNG files process identically to the PEFs. The difference is in how Lightroom stores the editing information when you elect the Metadata-Save to File command or if you have it set to automatically sync the metadata into the files. With PEF files, the metadata is written to a .XMP sidecar file in the same directory as the PEF file. With DNG files the metadata is appended to the .DNG file. This makes the DNG format files a little easier to manage as you cannot accidentally lose your metadata edits. Hi Godfrey, That is clear, but is there any reason why you don't set the K10d to capture in dng format? That'd save the pef-dng conversion step, wouldn't it? -- Ciao, Lucas -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

Re: Aperture operation on film bodies
Op Wed, 20 Feb 2008 19:38:01 +0100 schreef Walter Hamler [EMAIL PROTECTED]: OK. I am clueless. I put the 18~55 DA lens on the K1000 body thinking it would only work at WO aperture because it has no aperture simulator. However, when I actually looked at a slow shutter speed, it appears to be stopping down to 16 or 22. I tried my other DA lenses and the same thing. Why is my thinking wrong here? Bodies that can't control the aperture simply push the aperture lever on the lens to close down the aperture as far as it will go. An aperture ring on a lens physically stops this action at the selected aperture. Since your lens does not have an aperture ring, the body will completely stop down the lens. The aperture simulator is a mechanical feedback device, not the lever used to stop the lens down. See bdimitrov.de/kmp for all you never wanted to know about all K-mount incarnations. I shot a series of exposures at 21mm setting, and the prints show a definite vignette, but the usable area is much bigger than the digital sensor size. I am going to scan some negs and crop to see how an 8x11 looks. Somebody please tell me how this stuff really works :-) Walt BTW, the Alt-Print Screen does nothing to capture a screen shot. One of the things I absolutely love about my wee point-and-shoot is the macro mode but sometimes I'm without the PnS so I'm looking for suggestions on a macro kit for the DSLR. My current DSLR kit is a K10D, both DA* zooms, DA 70 limited and the DA 40 limited (soon to be replaced with the 21). Anyway, I've been thinking of getting the FA 50/1.4 and a bellows so that I can start taking some macro shots with the big cam. One of the reasons I like this idea is that this kit would be dual purpose. The 50/1.4 seems like it would work well for macro *and* it would be nice to have at least one fast lens in the kit. However, I'd love to hear some other suggestions. I've noticed a 100 f/4 seems to be a popular choice so I'd love to hear opinions on that lens. I'd also like to hear what some have to say about lighting products as well. Basically, I'm about to invest and would like to feel confident that I'm making the right choices.
