FSF: Pentax LX
Up for sale, my Pentax LX; it's one of the versions with ASA setting up to 3200. It's in very good cosmetic shape, and was given a thorough going-over by Eric Hendrickson maybe 24 months ago. The only problem it has is the shutter release lock doesn't lock, and Eric says he can't fix it (a sign of the Apocalypse nearing???). For those that are still interested, note that it comes with the original grip and strap (the important part being the bits that hook onto the camera lugs). The viewfinder is the FA-1W model, with an extended diopter adjustment range of +1 to -3 (and I include the original tool to adjust the diopter). The focusing screen is the SC-21. Still interested? Make me an offer! Re: FSF: Pentax-A 50mm f/1.2
Sorry Cotty, I've been away from the list for some time due to having NO TIME for fun stuff, like, you know, reading the inspired prose published on the PDML, or taking pictures of human beings other than those I have fathered. While I have you on the line, I have been curious as to the digestive state of your hat. It's a sad state of affairs that whenever I come across some piece of news about the K-1 I don't think about what exciting photos I could take it with it, but rather ask myself whether Cotty has eaten his hat or not. A lot of the speculation and measurbating (minute analysis of the photos of the mock-up) is unintentionally hysterically funny. I'm with Mark on that, particularly since I don't assume that the mock up will have any serious connection to the final form of the real camera. I think that it could be fun to buy vintage glass, but there aren't really too many old school lenses that I really *need*, in that they wouldn't really provide any functionality that I don't already have access to. What I'd really like are some copies of lenses that I already have, but with weather sealing, quick shift focus and modern coatings. It turns out that the two lenses that would do the most for me functionally are both Sigma, the 18-35/1.8 and their 35/1.4. -- Larry Colen l...@red4est.com (postbox on min4est) -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions. -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

Even assuming your statement is true, that would be precisely the point: That even ordinary images can be of great interest or historical importance (or even simple popularity - there's nothing wrong with that) long after the fact. We can't judge now what future generations will deem significant. No one could have guessed at the time it was taken that that snapshot of Anne Frank (which is even more banal than anything Vivian Meyers took) would have become one of the icons of the 20th century. Countless other examples exist of photographs turning up of important people taken before they became famous, from Abraham Lincoln to John Lennon. Things, places or events that became significant after they were captured in banal snapshots (the Titanic). Even critical evidence about important events has turned up retrospectively in what were thought to be throwaway images. Someone may yet discover an old shoebox of photos with one that shows the second gunman on the Grassy Knoll (or a photo of JFK's assassination that clearly shows there *wasn't* anyone on the Grassy Knoll). I don't see anyone or anything being harmed by people archiving their mediocre images. One of them may contain the 3rd grade portrait of the guy who discovered the cure for Aids in the year 2050. And if it doesn't? No skin off my nose. — I agree. Much of photography is of interest because it provides a historical record. A very small amount of that is artful. Both types are of value and worthy of preservation. My hope is that Grace will someday be a woman of accomplishment and that long after I’m gone, someone will be pleased that I recorded her childhood. Even if it’s only her children. My point about the Meyers work, which someone held up as an example of art rescued, is merely that there was heightened interest due to the way it was discovered and the personal history of the person who took the photos. Nothing wrong with that, and I enjoyed perusing galleries of her photos, but I doubt that future generations will judge the overall body of her work as artful. Then again, I could be wrong. The right- rear corner is just wrong--I have to move my whole right hand to adjust EV compensation, and that's something I do all the time since I use aperture priority AE most of the time. The Sony allows me to re-map this control to the front dial, making it fall to hand easily like it is on the Olympus E-M1 and other cameras I own. I don't know whether that solution is possible on the Fuji. Interesting! I find moving the EV dial very easy with just my right thumb, without moving my right hand at all. Cat skin ;-) Different size/shape hands, we probably hold the camera somewhat differently too. I can't seem to bend my thumb and move it precisely on a wheel in that location. I always end up taking the camera from my eye and looking at the dial to see what I'm doing, which gets in the way of my shooting workflow. Don't leave that cat skin laying about. I hear it broils up nicely and goes well with hat. ];-) (Ann will shoot me next time I see her… ) G I don't have an issue with the placement of the EV Comp dial, but I do have an issue with how tight it is on the new X cameras; I can barely move it with my thumb while holding the camera steady to my eye, and when I do, I'm never sure how much I moved it because I generally overshoot. And no, Godfrey, you can't reassign this to another dial. Related to this issue is the shutter speed dial, which is even tighter, making it impossible for me to shoot in Tv mode (unless I'm happy picking a single speed and not changing it dynamically in real time as I shoot). But I expect EVF's will eventually get as good as optical viewfinders and will replace them – the elimination of the moving mirror, prism, etc. will make the cost reduction irresistible (though I'm skeptical of their effect on battery life). Yes kids, we have a winner. Using my X-Pro1 with the viewfinder lit up has incredibly short battery life. The X-T1 will have an accessory battery grip, which adds to the size and weight, and probably still won't take it up to a K5IIs for number of pictures. They are listing the battery life at 350 for the X-T1. I bet the reality is a lot less. Now that I think about it I realize I got it backwards: EVF's will replace optical viewfinders and *then* they'll (eventually) get as good as optical viewfinders. I hope they'll get good enough before then. This new Fuji could be the tipping point. From what I've heard, mirrorless sales numbers aren't all there. While they have a small but vocal fan(boy) base, they aren't really being embraced by the public. bill Bill, I take so few shots that I've never run the X-E2 dry in less than a few days, but I can see how others might have issues with short battery life. The X-T1, if I read correctly, offers a common sense EVF mode whereby it only turns on when you put your eye to it (and the rear LCD is off all the time). Why it's taken them 4 or so years to implement this instead of the EVF on all the time mode they had is beyond me. When I'm street shooting I actually carry the camera turned off in my hand, then turn it on when I see a shot worth taking. As far as mirrorless sales go, from memory I will quote that in Asia and Europe DSLRs represent about 1/3 of camera sales, and mirrorless another 1/3. In the US, however, DSLRs are around 40% and mirrorless 15% (I'm on my phone and can't check actual values, so I might be off with the numbers, but the trend should be correct). The US is a huge market, but let's remember these camera makes are Asian, and if it sells there, they will keep making it. I was anti EVF until I spent a month shooting with the Panny G3 for a review. Then I went back to the K10D and wondered where the histogram and all the other info in the OVF had gone to. And why was it all off a sudden so hard to manually focus in low light??? Why was the OVF so dark??? Haven't looked back since. That's not to say I don't get the romanticism and directness of the OVF (I do love looking through my LX's viewfinder), it's just that a *good* EVF offers me more benefits. Ideally we'd have DSLR OVFs with lots of projected info, just like the Fuji X-Pro 1, but nobody seems to be in a hurry to develop that. Re: Another PJ in trouble for Photoshopping
I hope this keeps happening until everyone figures out that there is an art to journalistic photography, and sometimes you need to edit out shit that distracts from the message. Do news editors not edit the text in written pieces to make the story tighter, more compelling, more gripping, more concise, etc? So why are image journalists held to a different, more restrictive standard? On 20 January 2014 20:24, Mark Roberts postmas...@robertstech.com wrote: Hi, boys and girls! We're back form old blighty after a splendid week in London with brief excursions to Milton Keynes and Oxford. We toured Blechley Park with Bob W and Chris Mitchell and his wife and had a fascinating look at the code breakers' headquarters and then a nice bit of dinner wine in Milton Keynes. We chatted a lot about the rest of you on the PDML and laughed at several of you behind your backs. Jolly good fun! Wednesday was the trip to Oxford and a meet-up with Cotty and wife. Japanese food for lunch and a brief tour of the 800 Years of Medical History at Oxford exhibit. Dr. Lisa was impressed. Other relevant and irrelevant items of interest: The Wildlife Photographer of the Year exhibit at the Natural History Museum. We've seen it in many previous years but this one was the bet yet. Truly outstanding stuff. And the kid's division(s) looked more like the photos really had been taken by the ages indicated (rather than daddy setting up the camera/lens/tripod and junior pressing the shutter button when instructed). The Astronomy Photographer of the year exhibit at the observatory in Greenwich was fairly small but absolutely breathtaking. The effort and preparation that these amateur astrophotographers put in is humbling. Brilliant stuff all astronomers should see (you getting this, Miserere?) Got it! I'll go right ahead and book a plane ticket to go see it! :-p Funny thing is, everybody always assumes I do astrophotography. I have to explain to them that I have a car, a mortgage, a wife, and now a kid, so no, I don't do astrophotography :-D Our own Darren Addy has started down the slippery slope of astrophotography and I hope he's able to stop before it's too late. Turner exhibit in Greenwich was superb. He's one of my favorite artists and this didn't disappoint. We also saw the Spencer exhibit at Somerset House and enjoyed that a lot. The Hunterian Museum at the Royal College of Surgeons was a high point for Dr. Lisa. It held my attention for half an hour or so but she was enthralled and could have spent a day there. She's just been reading a superb book about Hunter (http://www.amazon.com/The-Knife-Man-Snatching-Surgery/dp/0767916530) and has been astonished by the work he did in the 18th century – brilliant man. We'll be back to this one on future visits. If you visit London and like books you absolutely must visit Daunt Books on Marylebone High Street. Fabulous book shop. Impressive building. Nice people. Photographically I ran the gamut from HCB-style street shooting to overprocessed HDR photography and everything in between. London and Oxford are both fabulous places for photography and, for my purposes, particularly at night. I'm doing more and more experimentation with the third dimension of photography, time, using long exposures and/or multiple exposures. I was traveling without a tripod and I really enjoy the challenge of finding a spot to rest or brace the camera and then work out the composition by trial and error. I had a blast and got some pretty good stuff, I think/hope. I did almost all my shooting with the DA 12-24 (which saw the most use) and the DA-L 55-300, the latter purchased specifically for this trip. It's supposed to be sold only with a camera body as part of a kit but some dealers break up the kits and sell body and lens separately. The lens was $179 new, including shipping. It lacks the quick-shift focus of the DA version and has a plastic lens mount but it's the same optically, which is to say, superb. An amazing lens and highly recommended. The 21mm Ltd also saw a little use. Now I'm getting ready for the start of school on Wednesday and since I'm teaching Digital Design again, a course I haven't taught in a few semesters, I'll be fairly busy, so it'll be a while before I get a UK photo gallery up (I also have the PDML Photo Annual to contend with). Hang on, because I think it'll be worth the wait. I'll be right here, sitting down, waiting to see your photos of my hometown. You better do the city justice! Re: What if Pentax made a monochrome K-3?
Some questions for you: * Assuming you gain sensitivity by using a monochrome sensor, then you would lose it by placing a coloured filter in front of it. * So what have you gained in the end? The K-3 already seems to have plenty of resolution; what will you do with all the extra rez? * What lenses are these that work well for BW but not colour? If a lens shows chromatic aberrations, these are going to be present on a monochrome sensor too, except they'll show up as on your images as broad grey edges on dark-to-bright transition areas instead of as coloured edges. I shoot BW (converting from RGB) and have to deal with CAs just like everyone else. You might enjoy reading this article comparing monochrome to RGB sensor (on a medium format, but still useful): http://www.luminous-landscape.com/REVIEWS/cameras/achromatic.shtml Also, depending on who's selling you the monochrome sensor, you might actually *lose* IQ at higher ISOs: http://www.luminous-landscape.com/reviews/cameras/leica_m9_monochrom.shtml I found the differences between RGB and monochrome sensors to be there for the nitpickers, but I've never been convinced these improvements outweigh the benefits of an RGB sensor for BW work. My $0.02, etc. Cheers, —M. \/\/o/\/\ -- http://WorldOfMiserere.com http://EnticingTheLight.com A Quest for Photographic Enlightenment On 29 November 2013 12:01, Zos Xavius zosxav...@gmail.com wrote: Would you buy it? Plus think of all the great lenses that are not all that suitable for color, but work amazingly well in black and white. Just some wishful thinking. Re: FSF: Some Pentax A, FA, Tamron, Tokina, Vivitar, etc lenses and 1.7x AF Adapter
Embarrassingly, I briefly lost my FA 20mm f/2.8 this afternoon. Now that I've found it again, I'm downgrading its external condition to an 8 due to some scuffs on the barrel; nothing that affects its physical integrity. Front cap is original Pentax, rear cap generic. I also have (and always have had) a 67mm filter on it. Needless to say, all lenses are free of fungus and have oil-free snappy blades. If you're not happy with your purchase, you have 10 days to return it to me for a refund (minus shipping costs). Their hardware NR is pretty decent, very clean looking, and still retains a lot of detail, especially after the raws are processed gently in lightroom. I never once objected to the engineers' decisions on the K-5 when it came to the sensor. Pentax seems to be very good at massaging maximum performance out of a sensor. The K-3 IMO looks very good too. A 50% increase in density with similar noise and DR over the previous generation is very good IMO. The next round of chips will likely be even better. I don't have any real figures, but I feel that looking at the files from my k-5, its easily giving up quite a bit of resolution due to noise smoothing. From what I can gather the K-3 is resolving more fine detail but yet showing similar amounts of noise when resized to k-5 resolution. That's what I have seen with my own eyes at least. To be honest they are pretty close and careful raw processing will result with more detail in the k-3 files with similar noise levels. I find pentax's jpeg engine to be not the greatest at noise reduction, but honestly, its better than some other camera makers too. Zos, can you please point me to the source of that information? Anyway, he actually...well...I'll let you watch the review to find out what he thinks of these FF Sonys (or is it Sonies?): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wUJc83wV6iA If only their lenses weren't so humongous, they could be contenders for Miserere's stable of street cameras, especially at $1,700 for the A7. I think I understand what you are really having an issue with in these shots, Larry: it's that the photographer is objectifying the motorcycle. Exactly. It's terrible when they dehumanize fine motorcycles like that. :-) More seriously, I see a spectrum that goes something like: The human body as a compositional element. The human body as something beautiful, or at least visually interesting. The model as a sexual being. The model's ONLY purpose is as a sexual being. For me, there is a key difference between the last two, and a lot of cheesecake seems to dress and pose the women to convey that these women are beautiful in part because they are too dumb and helpless to do anything but be sexual objects for the pleasure of others. Admittedly, I might be more attracted to such women if we didn't bore each other to tears. They tend not to have anything to talk about that I find at all interesting, and I tend not to have anything to talk about that they find interesting, or in many cases, in a way that they understand. In normal conversation, I'm deficient at using an accessible lexicon. -- Larry Colen l...@red4est.com http://red4est.com/lrc -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions. -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.
Re: More K-3 BIF: more noise, but more detail
It's also unlikely that a camera company will release a new level of camera without accompanying lenses, because lenses is where the greater profit lies, not in the camera, especially since I don't think Ricoh can put out a FF at $4,000 and expect anyone to buy it. In fact, based on the lens roadmap, it seems unlikely. That's the fly in the ointment. Paul Indeed. I especially like the notion where people notice that certain lenses produce imagery outside the borders of APS-C image circle and hence: 1. They pronounce that the lenses do cover FF. Which is probably true as far as strict definition goes, but the sharpness fall off and other pleasantries are there nonetheless. 2. Then they conclude that Pentax has a secret plan of introducing FF and that the lenses are half way there... Some conspiracy theories are just that - theories. IMHO, it totally stands to reason that there will indeed be a FF body. However we have no information whatsoever except rumors and suppositions to know what will it be like when it will be introduced(*). I mean in terms of available lenses, etc. Boris (*) We do know that certain Englishman may have to eat his hat though... -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.
